Sony to make a cheaper PS3 available to consumers soon? Another game delay...

First the 60GB PS3 dropped in price, then Sony announced the package wont be out for long, and now gamers that have no PS3 are loosing hope that the price cut will ever happen at the right time. Well Game Informer might have some relieving info for those gamers and not so relieving info for the rest.

First off Game Informer has suggested that Sony is planning to release a new 40GB PS3 package that will only cost 399 dollars USD, 100 dollars cheaper than the current price dropped 60 GB PS3.. Game Informer suggested that the announcement was supposed to be made at E3 and was surprised when the announcement wasn’t made.

The second rumor Game Informer is suggesting is the new Final Fantasy game could be delayed until 2008 or beyond. Apparently FF XIII is under going several problems that may take a year to fix and get together. Along with problems the game also has several other features that are not developed as of yet.

Game Informer also suggested that PSN could be receiving an awards program similar to the one offered in Xbox Live and all games coming out this fall will feature the program. Not much more info was given other than Sony is trying to work with third parties to incorporate the feature.

might have been mentioned in another thread. I've read that the article says its that price but no backwards capability, hopefully that means it has the emulation (like the 80GB) because otherwise it could get a bit confusing unless the box has a disclaimer that previous PS titles will not work

It would be awesome if it was true. I'd read elsewhere that the rumor was the 399 PS3 would be mid 08 which would make more sense.

How much is the emulative stuff costing? Like, what is really making it so the developmental costs are so high? Is it the blu ray, cause doesn't that cost them like $100 to make now. The Cell is going to be smaller to. I don't care for emulation that much cause I kept my PS2 around.

emulation is cheaper for Sony as its software, so they save on hardware pieces. Blu-Ray drives are what makes it cost a lot for Sony but that continually goes down.

Well they can still (and have been) emulating PS2 games with the current PS3 Cell/RSX hardware. They started doing that with the European models. Those mopdels still had the GS and a logic bridge but it sounds like they're now fully removing the EE/GS which would save them, I don't know, 50 bucks? No idea.

Damn. Not enough, I guess. I still think the PS3 will be $600 come Christmas because of the Christmas market and how everyone will be getting a system no matter what during those days. Then maybe down the line they'll wisen up.

Imagine....a sole $399 SKU. It would be over.

Yeah, price seems to be the only isue non ps3 owners have. Look at the difference the $499.99 price cut had. I still believe we will see a $399.99 sku this holiday season. Just a gut feeling.

It's an absolute certainty FFXIII won't be out in 2007. It's only 13% complete. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't out in 2008 either.

Yeah, FFXIII is going to take a long time. RPGs are some of the hardest games to make. We'll just have to wait and see. Here's to hoping that it's $399 though.

I doubt the Playstation 3 will still be $599 by Christmas. I think shortly after the 60GB model is depleted, Sony will drop the 80GB model by $100. And I wouldn't be surprised to see another $100 drop shortly after the Holidays.

Backwards compatability won't be removed. They're just getting rid of the Playstation 2 hardware and replacing it with emulation software.
