The Amazing Spider-Man Sam Eliot and John Slattery being looked at for J.Jonah Jameson

John Slattery, meanwhile, is a good actor, but with him, I think we'd be looking at more of a humorless, uber-hardened JJJ, like that from the '90's animated series.
but that sounds awesome
i dont actually know the guys work tho, its just 90's series has had the best and closest version of JJJ to the comics

Who said UBER serious? I said make him sarcastic and serious. As I prefer SARCASTIC over HUMOR, as in NOT trying to make the audience laugh. That's why we have Spider-Man, he handles the funny. It's almost like they gave JJJ Spider-Man's personality. JJJ needs to be more serious than humorous. The moment he becomes a clown, so does everything that he says about Spidey's villains and Spider-Man himself, including the Daily Bugle as a newspaper becoming a circus.

Sarcasm is humor:dry::dry::dry::dry::dry::dry::dry::dry::dry: JJJ has always been over the top and comic relief. He is the embodiment of over the top. The man smokes a huge cigar 24/7 and thinks a man saving children from fire is criminal behavior.

No more characters made into a silly and cheesy cartoonish actors. I've had enough of the childish comic relief JJJ in Raimi's films to last me a lifetime.

There's a way to make JJJ seem mean, sarcastic and serious at the same time--without turning him into a cheesy character of himself. Let's treat The Daily Bugle with some damn respect. And not have characters like Hoffman and JJJ playing The Two Stooges and basically making Spider-Man's villains seem like non-threatening and happy-go-lucky men in tights. The Daily Bugle needs to be a serious establishment that introduces and broadcast dangerous super-powered killers.

Give real reasons why Spider-Man is dangerous in the eyes of JJJ, he interferes with police business, he puts more people in harms way when fighting these super-powered beings, he and the villains causes property damage in the millions. Not everyone gets to see Spider-Man saving lives. This would actually make JJJ seem credible to some New Yorkers, given them some good and legit reasons NOT to like Spider-Man.

I agree with everything. Especially with the reasons you give for Jameson's hate having a base in facts and not just for the sake of hating Spidey for the movie goers amusement. I still can't get past the stupid Hoffman character.

I gotta disagree...JJJ is pretty cheesy

Stan even stated that JJJ is a grumpy version of himself and Stan Lee is cheesy con queso.

Um..do you think that this comic panel you posted is on the same level of cheeseenes as that stupid scene he had in SM3 with the medicines, or the kids in the final battle? The thing is in the movies he was always used as a comedic relief cliche and people become tired of it. And honestly i hardly loughed in all of his supposed funny moments to begin with.

Never said that. But, I think there are some misconceptions about the character going on in here. JJJ is comic relief and he is cheesy. He is an over the top representation of a cliche.

Its really annoying when people say that there is more to JJ than comic relief.

When has he been anything else. He serves two purposes: The guy who hates spider-man and represents the public's dislike of him and to be the comic relief.

Whenever Stan lee wrote him he always wrote him as comic relief. Sure there was the occasional serious stuff (scorpion etc) but 9 times out of 10 he was there for pure laughs.

Ok i agree with you. He is cheesy and provides comic relief..But why did Raimi and the writers gave us only bad jokes and stupid comedy from Jameson. I wouldn't mind to see the panel you posted. Tons better than what we got.

It's just that did Raimi and the writers gave us only bad jokes and stupid comedy from Jameson. I wouldn't mind to see the panel you posted. Tons better than what we got.

But the thing is that his character is part of the comic relief and the way he's talking to people around him. What has a shaking table with medicines going all over the place got to do with his character? And that's where the unesecary and bad cheese comes in.

I think the real problem going on in this forum is false expectations. After TDK, everyone suddenly wanted every superhero movie to be dark, gritty, and realistic. While that works for Batman, it doesn't work for every other superhero. Iron Man proved that wrong. However, some people still want Spider-Man to be dark and gritty...calling for characters like JJJ to be serious and the only comic relief to be quips from Spider-Man. WTF!? I think too many people have become jaded about the character they grew up with. Spider-Man is a fun action movie. Spider-Man is the essence of a fun popcorn movie. Now it can be well written and that doesn't mean it has to be a hollow movie without substance. Spider-Man isn't tense, he isn't dark, he isn't gritty. Spider-Man should be accessible to every age of his fans...from 10-100.

I don't want an overly serious JJJ and I don't want a cheesefest JJJ. I want something inbetween. He should be a quite serious person who is still funny at times due to his over the top persona.

It's like when you find someone over-the-top aggressive and angry person to be funny because of his over the top reactions, not because he is cartoonish and goofy.

But that is what he was in Raimi's films:huh::huh::huh:Simmons was yelling 90% of the time.

I didn't complain about that :cwink:

He was a little too much in Spider-Man 3 imo but other than that he was pretty well done I think.

Err..Not S.Elliot again in a marvel movie. He might fit the role perfect and be a great actor, but he has played already 2 marvel characters.

Well Chris Evans was the human torch and now he is captain america

I think we all need to just forget about F4 and F42.

Slattery is really the best for this role if you ask me. Simmons was JJJ incarnate but the only other actor that can pull this off in my mind is Slattery. If you have seen him mad in Mad Men you know he can do this.

I don't really want Sam Elliott as Jameson, and I'm not too familiar with Slattery besides Iron Man.

^ As long as Vincent Kennedy McMahon isnt playing JJJ it should be fine lol but seriously could any of you guys picture that?

John Slattery is a great actor, I'd love to see what he'd bring to J. Jonah Jameson. And anyone who thinks of him as "humorless" or "uber-hardened" evidently has never watched Mad Men.
