School rallies around student in bullying incident

KESWICK, ONT. — The 15-year-old black belt thought he was doing his tormentor a favour when he elected to fight back with his weaker left hand.
He had heard his white classmate throw an angry racial slur in his direction after an argument during a gym class game of speedball, and now the student was shoving him backward, refusing to retract the smear.
The white student swung first, hitting the 15-year-old with a punch to the mouth.
The 15-year-old heard his father's voice running through his head: Fight only as a last resort, only in self-defence, only if given no choice, and only with the left hand.
His swing was short and compact, a left-handed dart that hit the white student square on the nose.
The nose broke under his fist, igniting a sequence of events - from arrest to suspension to possible expulsion - that has left the Asian student and his family wondering whether they are welcome in this small, rural and mostly white community north of Toronto, one that has been touched by anti-Asian attacks in the past.

Beg to differ, I had a few bullies come up to me back in HS and I did threw the first punch and more, I wasn't going to wait for them to start it and a few of them had weapons

I heard about this yesterday awesome story. Apparently the students (I think it was almost 400) went to school a couple of days later dressed similar to honor the karate kid and did a walk out in protest of his suspension and racism in general. The school and authorities are now reconsidering the case.

Only with the left hand? His dad really said that? His dad thinks highly of his son, probably for a good reason.

When my dad gave me the "fight talk" it went a lot like this.

Majic Walrus Father: Son, if you should ever be in a situation where a fight is needed you must remember 4 steps.

Majic Walrus Cub: Yes father?

Majic Walrus Father: Step 1: Run. When not possible to run go to step 2. Step 2: Scream. When step 2 is not effective go to step 3. Step 3: Fight dirty and if possible cheat if this does not work go to step 4. Step 4: Review steps 1, 2, 3 during recovery in hopsital.

Since then I've never lost a fight.

this kid must be really good if he could use his left hand to break someone's nose. I'm guessing he is a right handed person, making his left hand weaker...

It only takes 10 - 12 lbs of pressure to break someone's nose. Even if he was right handed and the left was his weaker hand, he's been trained to learn how to strike with his left hand.

I think a big part of stopping bullying is addressing the parents of these kids that prey on other kids...in some cases the parents are just as predatory as their child

I guess I am the only one that felt that article was horribly dramatic. I seriously doubt his father talke to him like a f-ing temple monk.
