Scorsese's The Irishman

It goes beyond the technical stuff for me. It does not look like all that engaging a story either. Looks like it might be trying to rely on the strength of the names involved with the project rather than the strength of the story.

BTW, just to be clear I hope this is not the case.

I think the story around Jimmy Hoffa is incredibly interesting so maybe just thinking about that and seeing what looks like primo Scorsese filmmaking is what's making me so excited moreso than just the trailer, I guess. But trying to look at the trailer in and of itself, though, I still think it's a good trailer.

I think the story around Jimmy Hoffa is incredibly interesting ...
Agreed...and films like Hoffa really did a fine job of capturing that for me. This film just is not giving me that sense yet.

That's part of it for me, the whole Jimmy Hoffa story has already been told several times.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ to Close London Film Festival

Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” his eagerly awaited mobster film starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, will close the BFI London Film Festival. The long-in-the-works Netflix drama will have its international premiere in London on the fest’s final night Oct. 13.

The cast members are expected to attend, as is Scorsese. “This picture was many years in the making,” the Oscar-winning director said. “It’s a project that Robert De Niro and I started talking about a long time ago, and we wanted to make it the way it needed to be made. It’s also a picture that all of us could only have made at this point in our lives. We’re all very excited to be bringing ‘The Irishman’ to London.”

10 movies you absolutely, positively must see this fall (from 'It 2' to 'Joker')

The skinny: The Netflix crime drama teams two gangster-movie icons for the first time: Scorsese and Pacino, who plays union leader Jimmy Hoffa. “We got close a few times and then it didn’t quite happen,” the director says. “He and Bob and I needed to work together.” With De Niro (as hitman Frank Sheeran) and Pesci (as mob boss Russell Bufalino), Scorsese wanted to capture the same magic they had on “Raging Bull.” “We came at it from a different point in our lives, from a different perspective, and that means we explored new tones and nuances, new values. It’s possible that it’s the summation of what we started almost 40 years ago

Amazon doesn't have this issue.

Netflix Forgoes Wide Release For Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman'

Not even a Martin Scorsese mob pic could bridge the divide between Netflix and cinema chains.

The streamer will forgo a wide theatrical release for Scorsese's The Irishman in order to make the film available to its subscribers as quickly as possible, a longstanding policy that doesn't fly with exhibitors. There had been rampant speculation that the Oscar-hungry Netflix might further soften its stance in regards to honoring theatrical windows, but in the end, it couldn't reach a compromise with chains including AMC and Cineplex.

The Irishman will open in select indie cinemas willing to carry the drama on Nov. 1. More than three weeks later — or 26 days to be exact — it will debut Nov. 27 on Netflix, much as Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar-nominated Roma did last year. This rules out the sort of big-screen blitz Scorsese and other seasoned directors are used to, unless something changes at the 11th hour. (The Irishman makes its world premiere Sept. 27 at the New York Film Festival, where it's the opening night film.)

Wow, they just are adamant about not dealing with the theatres aren't they? Amazon is totally cool with it.

Ugh. So darn frustrating. You know i can watch it in theatres and then check it out 3 months later on Netflix don't ya? I just hope the best indie houses will have it for everyone interested.

How did Roma at the box office? Wasn’t it a similar release or no?

I mean it's a Scorsese flick, people will definitely go see it. But Netflix doesn't want to wait months to get it online.

Yeah, but it was my understanding Scorsese was adamant about a wide theatrical release.

The final cut hasn't been locked in yet so the runtime isn't guaranteed.

That sucks because I would have preferred to have watched this on the big screen for the first time. Oh well, Netflix is near the edge of a cliff anyway.

3.5 hour runtime sounds ridiculous and unnecessary.

3 and a half hours sounds wonderful!. Heck, even 4 hours will do. Scorsese and a mob movie. Delicious... like cake :D

How many times did you sit through Avengers: Endgame?

Here and beyond, it's amazing that people are actually griping about a movie over three hours when just a few months ago they were all-in for sitting in a movie theater multiple times for Endgame. But just a little bit longer for a movie by Martin Scorsese of all people is where they draw the line. Personally, though, a mobster movie by Scorsese that tops three hours sounds like an absolute treat. I'm in.

Hell some were even complaining about IT and the runtime, which due to the length of the book is justified. If it involves someone we like we'll sit three plus hours through any movie, concert or sports game.
