Scorsese's The Irishman

I still want to see it at the theatres if it plays in my town!

Hell some were even complaining about IT and the runtime, which due to the length of the book is justified. If it involves someone we like we'll sit three plus hours through any movie, concert or sports game.

Or binge countless hours of some tv show.

How many times did you sit through Avengers: Endgame?

Here and beyond, it's amazing that people are actually griping about a movie over three hours when just a few months ago they were all-in for sitting in a movie theater multiple times for Endgame. But just a little bit longer for a movie by Martin Scorsese of all people is where they draw the line. Personally, though, a mobster movie by Scorsese that tops three hours sounds like an absolute treat. I'm in.

First of all, relax. I have no problem with long films or sitting in a theater for long films. My favorite film of all time is The Godfather: Part II. I'm a champion of filmmaking and believe that filmmakers should take the time to tell the stories they need to tell.

I also didn't mean to sound like I'm complaining about this, but The Irishman being 3.5 hours long essentially makes it Scorsese's longest film ever. Based on the story he seems to be telling and what we saw in the trailer, that seems kind of unnecessary to me. Longer than Wolf of Wall Street, Casino, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Last Temptation of Christ, and a full hour longer than Goodfellas.

I will still be watching this and I'm excited for it, but even incredible filmmakers like Scorsese can make films that drag and don't warrant such lengthy runtimes. Just because I commented on it doesn't mean I'm "drawing the line".

True. Just that it's, as you said, ridiculous and unnecessary.

We won't know if the runtime was unnecesary until we see the film, no?

If the film needs 3 and a half hours then go for it. If it's well paced like Casino and The Wolf of Wall Street then i won't even feel that length.

This’ll probably be Marty’s last mob movie (*knock on wood*)

Let him be excessive.

I think this is Martin Scorsese. There are few filmmakers who can make that runtime sustainable... I think it's safe to say Scorsese is one of them who is capable.

This is very exciting. A mob epic.

I know DeNiro is the centerpiece of the film, but I'm more excited to see Pacino's performance in this.

I cannot believe that run time. Must be the longest mainstream release in decades.

Anything over 3 hours seems excessive to me. If the story demanded a longer runtime, then they should have made it a two-part movie.

Most of my favorite movies are almost 3 hours. Allows me to really immerse myself in the story telling.

Casino
Kingdom of Heaven
Wyatt Earp

If this works, this could be new advent of CGI where it's overused instead of using it in service of the story like this movie is.

Jurassic Park Syndrome?

I have absolutely no problem with this movie being three and a half hours. That said, for the theatrical experience, this would be where I'd say maybe they should include some type of intermission in the middle. Just for the theatrical experience of it. But like other people have said, if this needs to be three and a half hours, then it needs to be 3 and 1/2 hours. Martin Scorsese basically can do anything he wants and I inherently trust that he is correct. He's one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Who am I to question him?

I’m excited to see this movie on Netflix in the comfort of my own home. I just don’t have this need to go out to the theaters and deal with people every time I want to see a movie.

I only have patience for long movies from certain filmmakers. Scorsese is definitely one of those filmmakers.

People are allowed to be wary of a long run time, that's fine, but if you thought Endgame's run-time was perfect (or you wanted even more), then you probably shouldn't be the one questioning the length of a decades-spanning mob epic by one of our greatest living directors.

Jurassic Park Syndrome?

Pretty much.

This in some ways could do some good for older actors careers, but that doesn't mean it can't be misused as well intended as it might be. Story first. You got this and Gemini Man.
