It's never too early for speculation. Some might say this is a bit premature (after all, season 9 has yet to reach the half way point), but the topic pops up frequently in other threads.

So what do you think, will there be another season?

Obviously we don't know yet exactly where Clark's story will be when the season/series finale airs this spring, but assuming they continue the story for another year what expectations might you have for a tenth season?

My expectation is that he finally becomes Superman.

With the lack of a Superman movie on the horizon. And as a gift to the fans who have stayed loyal for over 9yrs. I think the last season should have him in the suit as Superman...Or at least 1/2 the season.

As unrealistic as it may be, I agree that, with no new Superman film on the horizon for some time, they should really go balls-to-the-wall with Superman-ing the show up next year. No holding back. Red and blue. Flight or lots and lots of super leaps and bounds.

Many of us would like it to be Superman year I, but is not going to happen if they keep the "how he becomes Superman" premise. What they could and should do in my opinion, is a two-hour series finale TV movie, and Clark wearing the suit at least in the final scene, that would be the ultimate payoff.

J'agreed......... The series finale really, seriously, totally, absolutely, indubitably needs to be a 2-hour event. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. With at least one good, clear look at Clark in the costume. Preferably in the midst of or having just completed some awesome, heroic save.

I agree if they stick to the original premise of the show, a season of Clark as Superman certainly won't happen.

IMO though, desperately holding on to the "how he becomes Superman" formula for too long is a mistake. The show has gone on far longer than I think anyone expected when they first stated thier intentions of "no flights/no tights". The story at this point has progressed Clark to the point where he's almost there now- He works at the planet, is romantically entangled with Lois, is focused on fighting crime, and is even wearing the S on his chest. If they try to drag his journey to becoming Superman through another season and a half at some point it's going to start feeling very forced, like they are working specifically against the natural progression of the story.

I could be wrong but I can't help but wonder if the CW will be taking a close look at the ratings and reception of Absolute Justice as a way of possibly testing the waters to see if they can or should let the show evolve.

I definately agree with other posters who have pointed out that another Superman film is definately not happening anytime soon, and it would be nice to see Smallville step up and try to fill that void.

Exactly. I think the benefit of recognizing and accepting that the show is nearing an imminent end would help them to, possibly, let go of the notion that they have to keep holding Clark, and the show, back. After 9 full seasons, I don't think it would hurt the show at all, nor offend its dedicated fanbase, to devote the majority of Season 10 to actually seeing Clark finally take flight and the don the suit (perhaps or perhaps not in that particular order), instead of saving these last big steps for the last moments of the show. Let us have the time to really savour them, and really bask in the joy of the fulfillment of a decade of watching, waiting, and hoping.

totally i agree first i would hope that the series finale will be a 2hr blow out. I would like to see some old cast members like martha/perry/lex come back in some way/form for part of the season. I agree the season should be "Superman: Year one" deal. Now ideally it would be great if he is in a full on superman like suit all season. But they will probably hold off the final superman look to the last few episodes. Though i do hope he has more of a costumed suit and all that.

This ^

*Crosses Fingers*

If it gets a 10th & final season they should really try & make the most out of it & do a season full of Superman'ness. With this legal ****e going on who knows when the next Superman film or TV show will be.

Doomsday rematch anyone?

Totally they should let the season be a full on superman show. Though more likely the legal stuff is a factor in why it isnt/hasnt been yet.

I'm not sure the legal issues would be much of a factor in the decision as there are plenty of elements on Smallville currently which the heirs have already won the rights to.

It seems that regardless of whether the costume or name Superman is used on the show, that the use of Krypton, Clark, Lois, and the Daily Planet would already make Smallville subject to the same legal issues as the comics and films. After all the heirs own the rights to his origin now, and that's essentially what Smallville is all about.

Do you read the online sites and what has been the reaction that you’ve seen to Clark’s new uniform?

Peterson: We do read them a little. It’s hard because it’s…well it’s very, very valuable information and we want to make sure the fans are all happy. We would not be doing our jobs if we were tailoring a show for a sub-section of people. We really just want to make the best show we can. But I think fans are so-so on the outfit to be honest. I think, obviously, a lot of the reason is that they want him to be in his Superman outfit and they want him to be Superman, and clearly everybody wants him to be Superman. Unfortunately the character, I believe, still have several trials to go through. I think that if Clark Kent, in the show we have today, were to put on the tights and try to be Superman I don’t believe he would be prepared. So that is the story we’re telling is him really trying to weigh all the really difficult dilemmas that come with now that he’s embraced being a hero, what kind of a hero? What kind of a look? What kind of a theme and a symbol does he try to put out to the world?

When you get a 10th season, where would you take Clark?

I think our plan right now is a reflection over the 9 years and taking him out of the darkness that we’ve had, with him in the black suit and where he went after Jimmy’s death, and taking him to a place of balancing his Kryptonian side and his human side—which he’s not doing perfectly this year. [Laughs]. It would be him learning how to be Clark Kent and the entity that will be known as Superman.

As I said, with this mindset, S10 is going to be more of the same, but if they bring Martha, Perry and Lex back for a few episodes, including the series finale, plus Clark flying with the suit, then it would be worth it.

Just end the show with him creating the suit and then after the show ends. A few months later have him in a Superman movie. :)

would be nice zip but probably never going to happen.

I agree with you and as much as I've enjoyed this season I hate to hear them repeat this tired stock answer.

I feel they are doing the fans a huge injustice by dragging this out. So many elements are in place and with all of the other costumed heroes running around it's time for him to become Superman.

I think they are making a big mistake if they don't go into Season 10 as the last. Granted it's still early and we don't even know if we are getting a 10 or how it will be approached, but I feel that's how it should be handled.

They need to set their end game and build to it all season. No more Ollie backstory, no more distractions. Just get us to Superman. period.

I personally think the threat of Zod mixed with the details we have about the JSA movie lend itself nicely to setting Clark up finally as the MOS.

I can see how the story should play out in my head now...too bad I feel it won't work out exactly that way.

If their is a season 10 the entire season should be Clark's first year crime fighting as Superman. Take on Mongul, Cyborg Superman, Lex, Metallo, ect.

Since I've long given up any hope that the WB features department is smart enough to let the Smallville folks take over the franchise, my only wish for S10 is that we get a 2.5 hour series finale that will essentially be the Welling/Durance/Rosenbaum "Superman" movie we'll never see in theaters.

yea i hope the series finale will be a 2hrs series ender. I would hope they do that. Also if the jsa thing goes well i am sure cw would let the show go on 2hr ender. As for season 10 i agree it should be a full on superman season. IE clark in a more superman suit and being a bit more public.

Totally. Seaon 10 should be all about Clark in his first year as Superman fighting crime in Metropolis.

Season 10 should be the final season of Smallville, meaning it is time for some Superman action!
