ULTIMATES 3 #1
So, THE TWELVE is getting a #0 issue? I thought there were out of vogue. In any case, this is a larger than average week for me, but not quite a wallet-buster. Frankly it looks better than 11/29 looks right now. The only dud I am expecting is ULTIMATE X-MEN, which I am growing apathetic and by all rights, if I don't sense geniune excitement for the direction with this conclusion, I should call it a day with the title.
That said, I'd be less than honest if I wasn't considering, against my better judgement, getting ULTIMATES 3 #1. Loeb's Marvel work has become bipolar since he became a Marvel exclusive; middling between "good" (people have liked his FALLEN SON) and "abysmal garbage" (WOLVERINE, ONSLAUGHT REBORN). One more dud and he will officially be in the "overrated" camp, although he's had plenty of hits behind him in his long career. As for Joe Mad, some could argue it was his style that launched the "rip off manga" art fad of the 90's that has taken years to overcome, but there is no denying that when he is "on", his art is very kinetic. There is a part of me that wouldn't mind seeing Loeb turn The Ultimates into more straight up superheroes after a few years of Millar using them to vent all of his hatred against America Under Bush and all American Values, as well as his own Cynical Bleakness (i.e., you can't be a patriot without being a merciless thug, all heroes are arrogant jerkbags or unlikeable witches/bastards when you get to know them, etc.). The only problem with this is that this is a run attached to the first two Ultimates, and it may not wash. Following Hitch with Joe Mad is a style clash to say the least; like following Alan Davis with Humberto Ramos. And Loeb trying to make Ultimate Captain America into more of a "hero" after all his boot-stomping simply won't work. Plus, Joe Mad personally INVENTED the current perception of "late artist", taking years to finish a few issues of BATTLE CHASERS. With the Hitch/Millar run's lateness, ULTIMATES 3 could be considered "more timely" even if it mantained 6 issues a year. My head is telling me to leave it alone. But there is a part of me that is morbidly curious.
