I don't understand how anybody was surprised about how little the movie made...people on the net need to live in the real world for a moment, most people don't want to see these video game movies and Clive Owen isn't a big enough name to bring in anyone.

Children of Men and Sin City in mind...you might want to retract that last comment.

and lets not go around telling others what most people like...i could just as easily say "most people like stupid action movies as long as the action is amazing" because movies like that tend to sell well...and this movie fits that bill. and it's not a straight video game movie either.

i guess what i'm trying to get at here is that your statement above is wrong :)

I think Michael Davis did a good job for this type of flick though. I'd like to see him take on an actual graphic novel or other comic book movie in the future.

It was only on about 2100 screens, everything that made more than it was on 2500-3000.

It's #6 in the weekend estimates with a little over $5 million.

It didn't do well over the weekend, looks like it'll be in the same mold as Grindhouse, one of those movies that almost everyone that sees it loves it, but not nearly enough people see it.

The fanboys love these types of way over the top flicks, but the general public just doesn't go for them.

It'll have to rely on dvd and it's inevitable cult status for its profits.

I think Grindhouse was a tad bit better, both where great, but GH made me belive it wasn't completely void of anything, where as SEU seemed like there was no point

not belivablity/ or a good story like that matters with a movie like this, but what I told my friend is the comparison is watching two hilarious tv shows, tv show A. Mr Show with Bob and David (representing the GH's, and Shoot em Up's) and tv show B. the Office (representing Die Hards, V for Vendetta's etc) both shows might be just as funny but I can't watch more than three episdoes of Mr Show with Bob and David in a row, or my brain will start to hurt cause it is pointless comedy, where as I could never watch enough Office cause the stories they weave with the great comedy is priceless

I love off the wall stuff, but its not quite as sweet as great action with a story I love

I'd give this one a 9

I don't think it's completely void of anything, the scene between Monica and Clive prior to the sex scene shoot out where they talk about their past genuinally made me care about them, and it did a great job of condemning the very thing it appeared to be condoning with its take on gun control.

I loved Grindhouse, but in Tarantino's segment in particular, there's way too much irritating girl talk that was neither entertaining me, nor making me care about them. Shoot Em Up is the ultimate example of cinematic entertainment. I was never at all bored, every single setpiece was like nothing I've ever seen, actors elevating material that wouldn't have worked with other actors, not a single moment where there wasn't adrenaline pumping through my body.

I love Grindhouse, but quite a few moments lacked that in Death Proof (which is inferior to Planet Terror, but still quite good).

Once I have this on dvd, it'll probably be my most re-watchable movie.

The Passion of the Christ is tied with The Return of the King for my #1 movie of all time...but for entertainment I'd rather be watching Family Guy.

This may not be the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it's certainly the most fun.

I loved this movie. It had a real Robert Rodriguez feel to it ala Desperado. It also felt like Transporter in some parts as well. Kind of like a combination of the two movies. I thought it was great. Loved Paul Giamatti's character. He had some awesome lines in the film.

Nice ode to Clive Owen's BMW days as well in the movie, too.

Nice, im glad someone else noticed that, I was sitting in the theater thinking the same since he only drove BMWs in this flick

Hahah, saw this again. The aftermath of the skydiving shootout always gets a laugh out of me.

Children of Men was a great movie but it made very little and SinCity was not touted as an Owen flick nor did it make money because of him...try again. Next you are going to tell me that people went to see InsideMan because he was in it and not because of Foster and Washington. I like him well enough but he isn't a draw, if he was Shoot em up would have did more that 5.7mil.

The proof is in the pudding er boxoffice numbers, most people don't care to see these type of videogame films, hell I don't hate all of them and I'm not calling it a bad film because I haven't seen it but it failed and was destined to do so for that very reason.

Just because you like an actor doesn't mean that he is a draw. Evidence, Clive Owen, you like him but he isn't a draw. So there I don't like actors for there boxoffice prowess either so you are a smart fellow. I don't care for Tom Cruise but he sure brings in the people most of the time.

I would have to agree with him on this one, im a huge Clive Owen film, Ive seen almost every film he is in, but he still hasnt made it huge in hollywood yet for his name alone to draw large audiences. He is gaining popularity give him a few more movies and hopefully he will be there.

Shoot em up isnt a movie for everyone thats why the numbers were so great either. I love this flick and hopefully on DVD it will do really well.

I've eaten like 3 or 4 whole, raw carrots this week.. :p

Alright so I finally saw this gem of a movie. Here are my thoughts.
SHOOT EM UP
9.5/10
In an age when action movies seem to be everywhere, it is very easy for some to be completely ignored. And the problem with Shoot em up, like it's video-game obsessed predecessor Crank, is that it is so ridiculously understated that a lot of people will completely miss the point.
Because, you see, Shoot em up works on two different levels. There is indeed plenty of mindless sex and violence to go around. Yes, people say ****, yes you get to see some "nice knockers", and yes people do in fact get shot up. If you said Shoot em up was nothing more than a mindless 2 hours of action then you are dead-on, but you are also very, very wrong.
What a lot of people forget is that what an action movie needs to be so good at entertaining you is a hell of a lot of creativity. This movie takes its cards from classics like Hard Boiled and builds on to them with some of the most unique fight scenes I've seen in a long time. Carrots are stabbed in people's eyes, Clive Owen pulls on about a thousand levers that are connected to about a thousand different semi-automatics and shotguns, and there are so many beautiful scenes in this movie that a lot of people could just take for granted, which I hope they don't.
What Crank did not even a year ago was, like it or not, usher in a completely new era of action films. That movie played by all the rules of conventional action films, but also toyed with them in tiny, minute ways. Shoot-em-up does the same thing here. Our hero, villain and love-interest could have all been incredibly stale characters...they are, after all, all archtypes. But Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and Monica Belluci all give their characters something unique. In fact, when you look at these actors and you start to realize how awesome their resumes are it is odd that they would do a movie like this, or what the casting director was thinking when he gave them the roles. But not even five minutes through and it's allready pretty obvious...these are some of the best understated performances I've seen in a while and they help ground what would otherwise be a completely ludicrous film. And, aside from the characters and the actors that play them, on the whole Shoot em up feels like a very run-of-the-mill plot. There is nothing particularly new about it, you've probably seen over a hundred action movies just like it and that's what the people behind the movie are counting on. It is in the little details that they toy with the cliches of action films and create something new that feels like a very nice, clean breath of fresh air. They mess with the theme most action movies have where the good-guy and bad-guy play a game of cat and mouse; the twist ending; the way guns are glorified; even the obvious solution to a car chase is no longer that obvious.
Now I know that as of now Shoot em up has not done very well at the box office, which is sad but really I didn't expect it to. Because on the surface Shoot em up is exactly like every other action movie out there. But underneath that surface is something unique: art.

I probably will. My main man Ebert gave this a great rating. 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, I think.
