Hi all,

I am trying to decide whether or not to get a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player. The main attraction to both is the blu-ray.

I know that the PS3 would give me a gaming system on top of a blu-ray player, as well as the internet and home entertainment stuff too. However, gamiing wise, I am set with my Xbox 360, and I have 9 great games on that already (Fable II, Fallout 3, Gears of War, Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Soul Calibur IV). I do, however, want to play Metal Gear Solid IV really badly.

Money is kind of a concern, so thats why I am hesitant to drop $400+ for the PS3

Like I said, the main thing I am going for is that blu-ray player, which I was only persuaded to buy because of the fact that recently, the special features on some movies have been blu-ray exclusive, and The Dark Knight is the biggest case of standard def getting screwed over on this front.

So, I ask all of you Sony fans, which is better? A PS3? or a regular Blu-ray player?

well the PS3 is better overall just as a bluray player. it loads discs faster for one. and handles blueray java games far better. the only down side it the lack of absolute silence you'd get in a stand alone, and you'd have to pay more for a remote for the best experience. but it just comes down to how much the extra cost factors in for you personally.

As of right now, the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market. It's profile 2.0 as well. As far as games go, I can only see having both systems (like I do) as a good thing. You don't have to miss any great games due to them being "exclusive". Although your wallet will be a little lite because of owning both. :csad:

Id say get the PS3. Id wait though a few weeks, just in case they drop the price for the holidays.

The movies I would get on Blu-Ray are

The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Iron Man
There Will Be Blood
Sweeney Todd
The Matrix trilogy
Casino Royale
Blade Runner
Pan's Labyrinth
No Country for Old Men
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy
The Godfather Coppola Restoration
etc

And when they are finally released on Blu-ray
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
The Indiana Jones films
The Star Wars original trilogy

PS3 is cheaper than most Blu Ray players isn't it? And it's better! Get the PS3

It used to be the cheapest BR player but they have gone down in price immensely. You can get definetly find others cheaper now, but its still universally accepted that the PS3 is the best one out there. You can't go wrong with it

Well I caved and bought a PS3 today with the Batman Begins Blu-ray gift set. I will likely get Metal Gear Solid 4 in the near future.

Out of curiosity, will the Blu-ray player up-convert my standard def dvds while being played on an HD TV?

I hear this question a lot and the answer you'll be please to know is yes.

If money is a big concern then save it and just get yourself a standalone player. Having said that, if you can save up the $400, then I strongly recommend you do and get yourself a PS3. You won't regret it. :yay:

I'm in a similar position.

So a regular Blu-Ray player would'nt look as good as a PS3?

PS3 even though its 2 years old, is still said to be the best BR player on the market. Thanks to its internet capabilties and hard drive, it is easily upgradable to any changes in BR specs via its firmware updates. Its great at upscaling normal DVDs, you can browse the internet with it, play games and use it as a media hub to stream your video, photos and music content from your PC. Most of these features, you won't get with a regular BR player so I think its worth it. Its a great value for the money. The only negatives I would say about it as a BR player is that it doesnt come with any HD cables or the BR remote. The controller works fine, but the official BR remote has all the buttons mapped to it and feels more comfortable when playing movies. And the HD cables (preferable HDMI) can be bought for less than $10 on monoprice.com

Yeah, I've read in numerous places that the Sony PS3 Blu-Ray player still a top notch high level Blu-Ray player.

yeah im thinking of purchasing a PS3 in the near future maybe after the holidays, and im i know im defintely getting TDK on Blu-Ray and MGS4 but what other games and accesories are must have?

I want to get a PS3 for it's Blu-Ray player function, but still the price is what is killing me. I know you're getting a gaming system AND a BR player, but is there any info about the price going down after the first of the year?

There's always a risk of the price dropping soon after you buy something. I remember when I bought my PS3 it cost me £460 with 2 games (Resistance and MotorStorm) and just one controller. Roughly 2 weeks after that it was announced that there was a new package being made available. £425 for the PS3, 2 games and 2 controllers.

Well this isn't the greatest deal ever but Amazon.com is currently running a promotion Buy a PS3, remote, PS3 game, and Blu-ray you get $50 off your final order.

I have a PS3 and a stand-alone player (Sony). I much prefer the PS3.
