Hell I saw the thing on TV when he freaking made the statement, I thought he was saying exactly how people interpreted it. Even he said it was "a botched joke".

If it was an obvious attack on Bush like my "Bush pretended to be a President this Halloween" statement in political science today it would not have been recieved any other way.

If it can be misconstrued, or seems like it could be offensive, guess what you don't have to say it. Haraldo Rivera (or however the hell you spell it) makes a living out of making an ass of himself, and I don't think his statements are intentional (like the infamous "so poor and so black"). Ya' know the classic phrase "think before you speak".

I honestly don't care what he meant, what he said was "if you don't make an effort to be smart and study hard you get stuck in Iraq".

So its bad for him to encourage hard work and studying?

are you actually trying to get us to believe that people in the military are stupid? i'm kinda leaning that way after reading this mind-numbingly idiotic post.

It's this kind of simple-mindedness that kept Bush in office. No. Kerry shouldn't apologize. Bush should for all the lives lost in this failure of a military campaign.

What is the harm of using Iraq as a motivator for children to study and work hard?

that tard isnt no war hero, hes a faker, and he definately isnt a patriot. USAs founding fathers wanted the USA to be a sovereign nation, liberals want the USA to be run by France and the U.N (global tests? wtf?)

Were you brainwashed or are you just naturally that dumb?

You're right, Bush should apologize for lots of things, lots and lots of things. However, until hell freezes over, should someone like Kerry not set the example of accountability by apologizing for his remarks?

No, because apologizing for something others misinterpreted and spun for their own political advantage is never the right thing to do.

On the other hand, a leader apologizing for invading a country with no exit strategy getting thousands of young troops killed is something worth apologizing for.

Bottom line: Kerry's attempt at a joke was somewhat facetious and very ill-timed. Still, all this furor is nothing more than the result of a slow news week combined with an opposition party that was just waiting to pounce on any slip-up that would take the spotlight off of the issues and scandals. So either way you look at it, it's plain effin' ridiculous. :down

Moving right along...

Apologize for a failed attempt at humor, or apologize for being critical of the prez?

Neither deserve an apology

no. becuase it was a willful misunderstanding on the part of the GOP. wheter you misread as well is irreleant, becaseu it wouldnt have bene national news unless the GOP blew it up.

this is not about being the "bigger man". the moment Kerry apologizes (and for what? for being miisunderstood?) the GOP will POUNCE and turn it into something its not all over again.

**** em. I didnt vote for Kerry but Im glad he's standing his ground right now.
He did the best thing here. he stated what he actually meant, and STATED EXPLICITLY that he thought our troops were the best, and left it at that.
he didnt TOUCH his orignally comment, or apologize, becuase there was NOTHING in it worth apologizing.

Anyone who CONTINUES to see his quote as "offensive" is being either willfully ignorant or divisive.

End of story.

The longer the conservatives make this an issue the more desperate they will look.

I saw that on the news yesterday and Kerry clarified that he was talking about Bush not doing his "homework" on Iraq and that being the reason the US is still in that place.

If you need to clarify and explain your joke, then your joke probably sucked in the first place.

Never been to Iraq, but does the background look anything like Iraq should look like?
