Should Supergirl have an overarching mystery like the Flash's first season? The whole mystery of Harrison Wells and who he really is has generated so much discussion and numerous theories that are fun to speculate on. This is something Arrow never had in its freshman year, and something that the Flash excelled at above its parent show.

Should Supergirl have a mystery villain or someone who appears to be on Kara's side? Or if not (if that seems too derivative of the Flash), then what kind of mystery could it have that could get viewers tuning in week after week to find out another piece of the puzzle?

As long as it has a season long arc, I'm fine with almost anything.

Something overarching. Arrow had one as well, as did Agents of SHIELD. It allows you to be relatively episodic while rewarding people for following along.

But what could the mystery be? Arrow didn't have a mystery in its first season, did it?

I know AOS had one about how Coulson was brought back to life and also who Skye was, but I don't think it was quite as interesting as the Harrison Wells mystery and how it plays into his whole character each week where we're left second-guessing every action and line he makes.

Arrow's mystery was "Who's the Dark Archer" but it was solved mid season. I think Alex will turn into an enemy but that will probably take a couple seasons. Judging on the character description on Jimmy when Brooks was cast, it seems "What is Jimmy really doing in National City?" will be the mystery.

But it's still not yet fully solved in the Flash. There are many questions still to be answered which may not be until the season finale such as what exactly does Wells want and if he's from the future himself.

A season long mystery like that for Supergirl would be interesting and would keep viewers coming back for more.

yes please the mystery of
Hank Henshaw

There always is one, the mystery of Hank Henshaw would be to much like the mystery of Harrison Wells in the Flash. They need to do something different, I think Alexis will tease turning villain for a season or two so I can't see it been that.

Arrow's overarching plot in season 1 was "who was the Dark Archer AND what is his ultimate endgame?" Season 2 was "what is Slade's big plan?" With Flash it's "who is Harrison Wellls and what does he want?" And yes, I'd like Supergirl to have an overarching season-long (at least) storyline. You can still sprinkle in one and done stories and villains of the week, but there should be something related to the main plot in pretty much every episode, even if it's a small thing.

I don't think it needs one, but I wouldn't object to it.

But it's still not yet fully solved in the Flash.

Yes, it is, especially after the episode stinger to "The Sound and the Fury" (which I just watched via Youtube).

They're still exploring Wells' endgame, but the question of who he is has pretty much been unequivocally resolved.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

Based on what we know, I'm pretty sure Henshaw is going to be Supergirl's equivalent to characters like Malcolm Merlyn and Harrison Wells in that he's a recurrent antagonist whose actions will ultimately be driving the show's serialized elements even if he's not the specific focus of them week-to-week or season-to-season. Having said that, I'm definitely expecting there to be other 'primary antagonists' brought in as well.

Think this show could benefit from an overarching mystery, ala Arrow and Flash.

But of those have been able to keep viewer interest by developing and teasing those stories each week, only to ha e a big reveal at key parts of the season.

How about...
how Super Girl arrived on Earth?

Don't know if they want a call back to the Man of Steel movie but what if Kara was aboard the scout ship and is unknowingly not just a survivor of Krypton but several millennia out of touch with what her home became?

During the fight in Metropolis Clark's damaging of the ship forces it to eject one of the life pods and this series takes place several years after that event.

So Kara doesn't know her cousin is more a very distant multiple great nephew?

Would that go over well with you if that was revealed across the season when they explain why Superman isn't involved in this series on a regular basis?

How is any of that a spoiler since it is all speculation, and MOS is several years old?

Don't really want Clark to be a distant great nephew to Kara. Are you saying though that she's not in sync with the timeline?

@hopeless: This show is a completely separate entity from the DCCU and is going to stay so.

We also already know that Kara and Clark are aware of and have met one another, but are living their own separate lives. He's also at least a decade older than she is, so her arrival on Earth was more than likely delayed somehow.

maybe her ship flew into a time warp that might explain the age difference

Further muddying the issue is the possibility that we'll be seeing both her and Clark as babies on Krypton during the course of the Pilot, since the same casting call that went out for a body double for Clark/Superman included information about a casting call for opposite-sex twin infants.

interesting. This show is building up to be something cool. I like the casting and the bits and pieces of info leaking out are intriguing. Very excited to see how this show performs, especially with the CW team on board.

Here are my full thoughts on Cyborg Superman, Alex and Kreisberg joining the show.

If the dialogue used in the auditions is any indication, there could be a mystery villain or two:

Mysterious Villain: You saw the plane?

Lumberjack: Yes, and the girl. Where do you think she came from?

Mysterious Villain: He (Superman) made it to Earth. Is it so hard to believe others did to?

Lumberjack: She's working with the humans?

Mysterious Villain: It appears so. She must not become an impediment to our plans. The general has ordered you to locate her and terminate.

Lumberjack: I can't promise her death won't be public and messy.

Mysterious Villain: Casualties are irrelevant. Never forget who imprisoned you.

I want the DCTV universe to be completely separate from the MOS/DCC universe and I would like supergirl to be in continuity with Arrow and Flash.
They can do a 'flashpoint' sort of thing where reverse flash disrupts the time stream and makes sure that Kal's ship is never found and Bruce's parents were never killed and his reasoning would be that in order to make Flash a better hero he [reverse flash] had to remove the big superheroes like Superman and Batman that tend to overshadow him or something like that.
That way you'd have Arrow as the batman of that universe and Supergirl is it's Superman.

too bad the shows are on competeing networks or it miht work as it is I doubt cbs would allow another networks prorams to tie in like that

^ Supergirl will be set in the "Flarrow"-verse. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point.

Direct crossovers may not ever happen or may not happen for a while, but the 3 shows will share a universe.

Crossovers are not completely guaranteed, the show has to be successful first as Berlanti pointed out:

Is there a possibility Supergirl crossing over with Arrow or The Flash?

BERLANTI: So much has to go right. We have to make a great show. Again, I think of myself, if I were watching it, I would want to see that, but we have to get so many things right to make a good show, and so much of it is luck unfortunately.

the problem with the Mystery arch is having to keep up with that kinda style in the next season and so on... so if this is something there expecting to last for years (not just one season) where do you go from there, you have come up with some new mystery every season

though, I do find this style of story telling intriguing, at first, it kinda gets old fast... an I don't find these types of shows to do well in re-runs, either
(it's not something you can really watch and watch again, once you know the answer to the mystery, it's kinda become tedious to watch again)

I enjoy shows where each episode is more or less, stand alone, where it doesn't matter what order you watch them in, or if you miss an episode you wont be totally lost on whats going on...
