Should Supergirl return in a solo effort to the screen?

1) stick with the classic most recognisable version of the character. Keep matrix/linda/angel/crap in the comic abyss of the nineties. Supergirl is the kryptonian cousin of Superman.
2) Very few Superman supporting cast members. No Lucy Lane coincidentally popped in, no Jimmy Olsen. I can tolerate Lana if they go with the most recent Sterling Gates cast.
3) If they must give Superman a role keep him out of costume and in the Daily Planet. Maybe combating Cat's editorials about kara like they have done recently.
4) No origin story. start with her on earth fighting crime. All we need to know is that shes from krypton in a rocket and was trapped in suspended animation for years. This can be done is one scene focused on how homesick she is.
5) Have other young heroes that will not get their own movie, I'd prefer if they went classic with this and use Barbara Gordon because she will not be in a Batman movie.
6) Just because she is a girl doesn't mean that it has to be a romance. Leave that for a potential sequel. Follow up a successful solo with Supergirl and the Legion.

Irrelevant. Not enough people read the comics to be confused.

Supergirl is known outside of comics. The movie, the cartoons and Smallville all had her as superman's cousin. (I know the DCAU went around the houses about it. She was only from a separate planet in the cartoon because DC wouldn't allow Kara Zor-El after the crisis even to the cartoons. In JLU 'Far from Home' Superman says 'I didn't want her living in the shadow of being superman's cousin' after Kara returned to the DCU.)

It would be like using Cassandra cain instead of Barbara gordon or Tim Drake instead of Dick Grayson if they used Linda Danvers. DC just won't do that

Haha.

But seriously this movie can't be done without it being setup through Superman.

Although a Legion movie with Supergirl would have potential; but there are so many other DC characters with way more box office potential than this.

they could begin the reboot with her living with the kents on the farm. I'm tired of the 'last good kryptonian' crap in superman movies, its a false representation of the source material. (don't get me wrong I know its been done from 1939-1958 an again from 1985 to 2004 but the interim periods are significant)

As for box office potential. I'd argue next to wonder woman and catwoman Supergirl is the next viable option. She's more recognisable that Zatanna, Black canary, Hawkgirl etc. I'd also argue that as long as its a good movie any super-heroine can work.

I disagree. It would be hard enough to get Wonder Woman out of development death, especially since WB and Alan Horn don't seem interested in superhero films with female leads.

And The Kents (or just Martha) will obviously be part of the Superman franchaise; so it would have to connect.

I'm skeptical the studio will ever give Superman a sidekick; let alone give his sidekick her own franchaise.

Plus, they need to establish the adult DC Superheroes first before breaking into the younger ones.

It's just way too soon for Supergirl. Maybe in 10-20 years it could happen..

This subject is has just got to many flaws in. the bigest one is the fight between Linda Davers and Kara Kent. I have grown up my entire life with the Kara Kent version, she was the frist Supergirl I was exposed to and before her I didn't even know there had ever been a supergirl, I never learned about Linda Davers until i made it a point to search for Kara Zor el origian on the net and in comics.

also I want a movie with the Reckless, Carless, Wildchild, Badass girl, who is Kind, Careing, Sweet, Good girl who has issues with her cousin, dosen't follow the rules but still looks up to superman and deep down wants to be just like him, has opposed to Linda Davers who is the is goody goody, always gets along great with every one. I can't stand that, epsicalliy since i feel like she is a bad copy of superman and not her own charicter, that is why I think kara would make for a more intresting movie.

any way's I see the kara I know now has being created from Superman TAS and Justice League Unlimited because while DC told them they couldn't use Kara, they did any way, Kara Ne Z, it wasn't a different planet she was from, it was from a different plant Krptoians had coloized, and the only power change they gave her was makeing her fly better and more resistent to Krptonight. not what I calll following DC's rules. i still can't belive they got away with it. - yes I am aware they went with the Linda davers origin in this cartoon.

Sorry to say you have to use the most reconizable to the mainstream aduiance right now or you will have a flop like in the 80s and DC knows this. Kara Kent has had to much exposure while out side of comics all Linda Davers has is the movie from the 80s. that didn't ever explain why she was alive, when krpton was destoryed after she was born. - i will admit the comics origin does work for Davers and while you don't need superman you need a mention of him or at lest Clark.

:csad: this is why I dislike this subject ever time any one brings it up, to much fighting about Kara and Linda, no wonder DC doesn't want to do supergirl movie 2 large fan bases that will letter bomb you if they don't get there way. sry but a supergirl movie is asking for trouble.

I don't think fictional character age should be a problem. It just means that your Superman should be in his prime rather than him just starting out. If they did it they should set it up as her adventures elsewhere while Superman does his. I'd say Supergirl as a character has a different angle than an adult superhero that deserves to be explored regardless of characters with a longer fictional age. Age is just a false character heirarchy.

You make a mistake in considering her a sidekick. She is to superman what Batgirl is to Batman. Robin is the sidekick, Batgirl is something thats not quite a sidekick and not quite Batman. Supergirl's adventures pre crisis were mostly separate to superman. She would help her friends in the orphanage get adopted, struggle keeping her secret identity and travel in time and when Superman did appear it was mostly Clark in costume rather than Superman. (I suggest picking up Showcase Supergirl volumes 1 and 2 for more information). They didn't often team up back then. There were stories about them playing with the superpets, Clark and Lois adopting kara and stuff like that but never teaming up to fight bad guys. This was also in the days without the big crossovers. Kara's post crisis adventures started purposely away from superman. The Kill Kal-El story established her independently of him whatever you think of the story itself. You can argue that all sidekicks get time away but Robin didn't go it alone until the 90's, previously Teen Titans had been the only place they could do things like that.

Plus, I think this is the best thing. Its been done before. No matter the quality of the movie the image of Helen Slater has permeated pop culture. With Superman and Batman revamps successful its not hard to think that another one would be well considered. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they are actively seeking a supergirl movie but looking at a list of super-heroines I think she would be nearer the top than the bottom.

also I want to add another point to my dream supergirl movie. It would be a pre-post crisis hybrid. As well as Barbara Gordon I'd love Captain Boomerang Jr. Even if they just called him Owen so his dad could be in the Flash movie. He was amazing in the supergirl comics.

The only way to make it work would be for supergirl and "Black" Mary Marvel to fight. Who doesn't like a girl fight :yay: If they try to make a drama out of it, they will ruin in. You might as well try to make a godzilla movie where he only fights the army.. oh wait they did.

I haven't read the entire thread and it's probably been mentioned, but I'd love Michael Turner's Supergirl arc for a movie.

Of course, it's heavy with just about every other character :(

I'd happily watch a GOOD Supergirl film, but I would prefer DC to establish a GOOD Superman franchise first and then ensure the two films/characters reside in the same "universe".

I actually don't mind the original Supergirl film. It is atrociously camp and corny, but it kind of works. I've never seen the "deluxe" version though which includes additional footage which may help the movie somewhat.

Cheers.

The only thing the mainstream remembers about that movie was that Supergirl was an attractive blonde in a Superman costume. They won't know the difference between Linda Danvers and Kara if that was all they have to base their knowledge on Supergirl on.

Bruce Timm's Supergirl from the 90's effected culture postively for the Kara/Supergirl much more then the Slater movie but not enough to keep Kara as the only option.

Quality matters, too. The public will be more open to seeing a franchise or giving one the benefit of a doubt without it being tied to a bad quality product.

Eh, Supergirl was never as interesting as Superman.

1) stick with the classic most recognisable version of the character.

Being the most recognizable shouldn't mean a character gets to hog the entire franchise in the mainstream media. Not when there are other options which could fit into this era much better. Danvers can do this more then Kara ever could.

Keep matrix/linda/angel/crap in the comic abyss of the nineties.

That "crap" has enormous potential which not only could revive the franchise much easier, no enough people in the mainstream wuld realize they were watching Linda instead of Kara when they both look identical as Supergirl.

Unlike the alien Kara Linda is one of them from the beginning, so she'd be more relatable and they can push a darker Supergirl angle by expanding on her ties to the demon cult and allowing her to act out with super-powers against others like the audience would with such power whens stressed by things like bullies.
Supergirl is the kryptonian cousin of Superman.

Kara is only one option, not the only option for Supergirl.

4) No origin story. start with her on earth fighting crime. All we need to know is that shes from krypton in a rocket and was trapped in suspended animation for years. This can be done is one scene focused on how homesick she is.

True, but it can seriously backfire if the pubic see her as a Superman clone rather then an independent character.

This can be done much easier with Danvers.

5) Have other young heroes that will not get their own movie,

Bad move for a solo franchise, especially one in their first movie.
You risk the movie being flooded with non-essential characters from other franchise, they might not get he opportunity to be fleshed out properly if there are to many of them and end up confusing the audience who thought they were seeing a solo movie not a team one.

I'd prefer if they went classic with this and use Barbara Gordon because she will not be in a Batman movie.
Technically she already has been in Nolan's films, she had a homage with Batman and Robin with Alicia Silverstone and has already had a supporting role in the Batman cartoon in the 90's.

Thats more then Cassandra Cain or Bette Kane ever got.
6) Just because she is a girl doesn't mean that it has to be a romance. Leave that for a potential sequel. Follow up a successful solo with Supergirl and the Legion.

Agreed.

This should be done with the support of Superman and Batman.

Frankly with the direction Batman has taken. I kinda don't want to see any sidekicks in DC movies.

To be honest, I really like Supergirl, and at the same time I don't. I just prefer Superman to be the only Kryptonian.. all Kara does is steal some of his thunder.

That Would Be Cool and All and I'd Love it cause it would be a great Movie, there is no way in **** DC would ever go for it. not a chance DC would be willing to have Superman, Batman and Wonder Women all in one flim that not Justice League and is for SUPERGIRL NOT A SIDEKICK. sry for the shouting, blame the members labeling supergirl has a sidekick.

um The Major, the whole demon clut thing, I wouldn't want to see in a Supergirl movie that just sounds horriable. Something are ment to be forgotten. the Matrix, thing is bad, and I don't want the religious nuts telling me Supergirl is evil. sry but you really only have 2 chooses for a Supergirl Movie the Origial, Linda Lee Davers or Kara Kent. any of the others or changing anything would turn people away. so even if you did use Davers, you shouldn't use the Matrix. note I still holding out for Kara, but not fighting has much cause some good points about Linda have been made and she is the original supergirl.

SUPERGIRL IS NOT A SIDEKICK!

Simple answer: adapt a version of the DCAU Supergirl (Kara In-Ze of Krypton's sister planet Argo). That way you still have the "Cousin Kara" motif (since there's no way in hell the artificial shapeshifter created by an alternate-universe Lex Luthor who later fuses with a human being and becomes an Earth-born angel with wings of fire is EVER going to make it to the big screen even if WB actually wanted to make a Supergirl movie) without the "cousin" element being quite so literal.

Have you read any of my posts? They can adapt Matrix without getting into the complexity from the comics. Just make it a dying shape-shifter from another planet or dimension that bonds with Danvers to survive. No angel or no alternate reality is needed.

So, I seriously have to ask, do you honestly believe that the majority Audiance, the average joe people who know nothing what so ever about the comics can see a Dying Shapeshifting Alien has Supergirl? :whatever:

you really think the people will ajust just fine with no back lash when in the minds of the average person in order for there to be a Supergirl she has to be from Krptonian even if she not Superman biological cousin other wise she isn't supergirl no matter how you look at write it or go about it. i give in your right there isn't going to be any probablems with that at all. it will make for one great movie. :hehe: I sure the people won't be asking what is this crap Supergirl is Krptonian and she sure has heck can't shapeshift. never happen right :woot:

I do love sarcasum. :woot: But I honestly have to know if you believe this?

Yeah. They should definitely keep the character simple. Superman TAS all the way.

I think Supergirl really only serves the purpose that Harley does.. she's hot. The Joker doesn't NEED an annoying girl following him around, but a clown girl would probably be hot.

I like Supergirl, but I like Kal-El being the only Kryptonian even more. It's hard to make a firm opinion on this :(

I would love that aswell. And they could easily cut out some charecters from the movie. Just have Superman/Batman/WonderWoman/Darkseid/Amazons/Female Furies/Barda and your good to go.

I personally don't think that Supergirl is an interesting enough character for her own movie. If she ever does appear on the big screen again, I think that it should just be in a Superman movie.
