I prefer Deadpool to be not involved with the MU at large anyway. He's better as the guy on the outside mocking/parodying/satirizing everything else that is going on.
Deadpool seems to just run around being nuts and popping up in the middle of everything else that goes on for the purpose of putting in an appearance for its own sake.
I blame modern writers more than anything else. Warning, big text reply (I.E. essay) coming through.
Yes Deadpool is a random loopy guy, but he used to be more than that; his humor and zaniness was a big part of him, but was still a supplement. He, like Spider-man used the humor as a mask; for Spidey, it was to counter act fear in battle (and to later distract enemies), for Wade it was to dispel his intense self loathing and disgust.
Deadpool when written by Mark Waid [he led to the other writers because he wrote Deadpool quite well. He agreed on a whim without looking at his past. He actually said that if he had done research he would never have agreed to writing him; but he gave him depth and that lead to Joe Kelly's series.
Others include Joe Kelly, then Gail Simone; they provided real depth, a supporting cast and growth to Wade. His arc dealing with the Mithras/Alien savior and Weapon X/ Ajax storylines are some of his best. He shows that he's multi-layered; you feel anger at Wade, you feel pity, and you scream at the book for the rotten luck he gets. These writers were able to mix humor with great storytelling and great character interaction. In the case of of the Mithras, Deadpool finally gets his wish to be a hero. He Rochambeau's Captain America (possessed) and defeats the alien "messiah"
Spoiler:
Wade originally was meant to be groomed to be a hero and slayer of Tiamat (the fabled killer to be of the Alien Messiah), thus LL&L were looking to induct Wade, but by the time they did, Wade was slipping and became riddled with cancer. Fast forward to years later. Wade, under the good influences of Syrin, has been actively working to become a hero, and he's making great progress. After a later run in with Typhoid Mary, because a long lasting bit of obsession, she tricks Wade into sleeping with her under the guise of Syrin. [she stole his image inducer while he was having a breakdown] This sole event, starts to eat away at him rapidly and he loses trust and stability. Eventually he harshly takes out his anger on Weasel and Blind Al; locking him in his personal house of horrors- The Box. He then goes on to fight T-ray in a disastrous battle which leaves him near death, buried a lone in the snow, and without any real support...until...
He's re-recruited by LL&L. Wade accepts since he's got nothing more to lose. Fast forward (past a lot of great character moments) and to the end of the arc. So with all this riding on his shoulders, he finally discovers that his ticket to the big time and a forseen Golden Age for Humanity, is to protect the alien Messiah. Unfortunately, Wade has a huge decision to make...let humanity have everlasting joy...at the cost of free will and sentience or kill the alien messiah and let everyone go back to filth but be truly still alive and free. During this time, everyone is losing their minds due to the proximity of the Alien Messiah to earth, Wade is only protected because Tiamat's ancestral armor abandoned him and attached itself to Wade. Tiamat lost sight of killing the messiah and just wanted to prove his strength by killing LL&L grunts and various army forces. The armor sensed Wade's will to do good. Together they kill the alien messiah. Wade saved this world...this GALAXY...but by the time the influence of the messiah wears off, everyone knows only this; Deadpool is gone and the messiah has been killed. Not good on the resume eh? "Lone nut robs humanity of everlasting earthbound joy and prosperity"
Time and time again, when written correctly, Wade has shown that he's a vulnerable human being and is progressing; he shows love for compatriots, waxes philosophical and even lays his life on the line for a better reason than personal gain or money.
Now this is an important one that annoyingly has been forgotten; Deadpool HATED taking off his mask, he would be paralyzed at the thought of people seeing his face. He used to drink through it when he thought he found his wife Mercedes he didn't even do the Spidey mask flip in front of her for fear she'd see a tiny bit of his flesh. At one point in his original series, T-ray burnt off his mask, and Wade fled SCREAMING (well his head was on fire) and ran off to find some coverage for his face. Despite feeling at home in the hellhouse, he was still too afraid to show anyone his face. It was his greatest crutch, but now for random lulz, he walks around out of costume in sometimes odd attire. I had that development, because it came out of nowhere. He never "got over it"; he got better around certain people, but never enough to walk down San Francisco in shorts a t-shirt and a baseball cap. This would only happen if his image inducer suddenly shorted out while wearing such an outfit.
52 on here is another example of how sensitive he was about his face and overall lot in life. http://www.4thletter.net/2009/04/th...-so-you-said-that-only-proves-that-im-insane/
Ovearll, sorry for the long off topic post, but it shows that any character, in the hands of a great writer, or terrible writer can drastically transform. In the case of Deadpool, he was a one dimensional ripoff of Deathstroke the terminator. Under competent writers he grew into an intelligent and multifaceted individual. Sadly, when he was written the best, sales weren't at their highest, with new writers, everyone brought something different to the table, but now, many writers have taken away things from that very table. Forgotten are his supporting cast, forgotten are his struggles, forgotten is his very soul. Now with immense popularity and exposure, all Deadpool has been seen as is a ridiculous and comically violent "cool urban/modern ninja figure." Sadly, this iteration gets all the sales and the fame. Not what made him worthwhile in the first place.
These days he is popular even though he isn't written as well. (apart from by Girschler, he's awesome, but still pretty shallow). And the masterpiece that was Joe Kelly's run was constantly struggling.
I'm glad they're reprinting Kelly's run, at least. For my part, if anyone shows interest in Deadpool, I always recommend Kelly's run over anything else.
Just to give a heads up, Siege: Spider-Man is a complete mislabel. It has NOTHING to do with Siege. It's just an ish of Spidey and Ms Marvel fighting Venom together, and even that takes place on the streets of Broxton. And even that is done in a pretty lame way.
If you're hoping for anything more significant than that, you'll be sorely disappointed.
Yes it was. I am so glad someone posted a preview of it because I hadn't planned on getting it, Now I am glad I did. It fills in a lot of gaps and I can't wait to see waht happens to Loki next.
