Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright Newest Film "The World's End"

The film opened at number 4 in the States with 8.9 million, beating out Hot Fuzz's #6 US debut at 5.8 million. It opened in almost twice as many theaters as Hot Fuzz did though, not to mention 6 years difference in ticket prices.

I liked the movie but it just felt like it was missing something that Shaun and Fuzz had. I still prefer Fuzz as my top of the Cornetto trilogy. You just can't beat seeing the dead living statue.

It's humor and use of genre is different from the other two films, though I don't think it is to the film's detriment, though it it is different from what I expected.

Faraci actually has an interesting take on the film's themes and its ending that for once is actually based on what is to be found in the movie (rather than his usual tactic of trying to hang unrelated political baggage around a film's neck). Worth reading.

It definitely needed a klatu barada niktu line in there. Maybe that is what it was missing from the other two...some pop culture humor.

As was discussed on the previous page, the movie was more of a straightforward genre film rather than a commentary on a genre like the other two.

Agreed. I can't quite figure out what I thought it was lacking.

Oh man, Edgar Wright knows how to shoot an action scene. Nick Frost is the action hero of the summer. Ant-Man's definitely gonna have the best action of all the Marvel Studios movies.

Maybe you should put it in your signature so every time you post in here, people can read it and not have to read every page to see what's been discussed in relation to their opinion.

Hmm? I was just saying that just a few posts back, on the previous page a similar discussion had taken place and you are free to look back if you like. Included are quotes from Pegg about that exact topic, how the new film simply is a genre film rather than so much of a commentary on it.

ahhhh

I took it as it's been discussed ad nauseum and for me to read the previous page. I ain't got time for that.

Fantastic end to the trilogy. Much better than the trailers made it out to be. I was pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed this movie. Very funny and entertaining. I'd say the ending and the last 15 really hurt it for me though. Just didn't do much for me.

Missing something? Good golly not at all.

Two things...

The
world ending in a film entitled The Worlds End
what a shocker! Don't know what people were expecting.

And two, this is their most thematically mature and emotionally gratifying film to date. And it needed to be. Wright and Pegg seemed to want to do a little more this time and it really paid off. Instead of hinging the premise on parody and satire, it plays it's plot straight and is a self contained narrative.

The Worlds End is just a wee less manic and absurd than Shaun or Fuzz, but it's still witty and quick witted as all hell. Just like Shaun and Fuzz, multiple viewings are in order to catch all the gags, one liners and jokes.

Gary King is the trio's most human and relatable character to date. Yes, Shaun is relatable but Gary is tragically human and feels like a flesh and blood character and not a actor playing a character. I'm serious when I say Pegg needs an Oscar nod for this film.

Some have said he's annoying. I don't see it at all. He's a selfish, manipulative person but it elicits more pity then dislike. As messed up as he is, I never detected any real malice or ill intent in him. He's just a damaged person who needs help. I think people who have reached a certain age and beyond can at least relate to him on some level. We've either felt like Gary, or know somebody like him. The rest of the cast is aces as well.

And leave it to Edgar Wright to give some of the most well shot action scenes in a film that isn't even an action film. All the fights in this film have such flow and energy and creativity. It's a major breath of fresh air. This gives me high as hell hopes for Ant Man. Hopefully his Wright-isms aren't too bogged down by the studio.

Edgar Wright is probably my favorite mainstream director working today. He strikes an amazing balance between fun popcorn thrills and writing and character. He can balance tones effortlessly. Shaun of the Dead and The Worlds End are perfect examples of this. You can laugh your ass off one minute, then get the feels like mad the next and it never once feels contrived of forced. There is a genuine love for storytelling in all of his films and it shows.

This is one of the strongest trilogies ever made. While nothing will ever top Shaun of the Dead for me, The Worlds End is dogging it pretty closely. I also love Hot Fuzz, but I find it to be the most tonally haphazard and least emotionally satisfying of the three.

Shaun of the Dead 10/10
Hot Fuzz 8/10
The Worlds End 9/10

Oh, one more thing. I know its opinion and all but I can't help but be baffled at some of the posts saying this film is too OTT. What? This is the most tame film of the series! Shaun and especially Fuzz are absurdest in nature while Worlds End is just "silly" in comparison. The action and situations are the most "normal" of the three by far.

Marathoned all 3 films today.

1. Shaun
2. Worlds End
3. Hot Fuzz

Also noticed that the King's Head pub was mentioned in Shaun of the Dead :D

I saw it tonight. I thought it was pretty good, but Hot Fuzz is still my favorite out of the Cornetto trilogy. Pegg and Frost were brilliant as usual. I think one of the funniest parts for me besides them meeting the Network was Nick Frost drunkenly breaking the glass on the door of the pub on his way out and acting as if nothing happened.

My list is the exact reverse order of this, lol. But they're all great, of course.

Nice catch!

That was quick, they already have a release date?

It's not unusual to have DVD release dates, television rights, etc sorted out before a movie is even released.

It's ALSO not unusual to be loved by anyone.

UK release date is Nov. 25th. The film has been out since July over here so that's why we're getting it early; no US details yet.

The movie's also been out for more than a month in the UK.
