Simpsons vs. Family Guy

Regardless of drop in quality or not, The Simpsons will always hold its place as one of the milestones of TV comedy and adult animation. Without it, there´d be no Family Guy, no South Park, no Futurama, etc. I love South Park, but sometimes the episodes can be a bit one-joke. Family Guy is more or less a knock-off that does have its moments but does indeed abuse the non-sequitor flashbacks.

you see i don't mind those flashbacks because 9 times out of 10 they make me laugh and thats what i want when i watch family guy. I still watch the simpsons for every new episode because i'm used to it and i see new episode on the adverts and i instinctivly watch.

No one's denying The Simpsons is a milestone of TV comedy shows but you have to admit it, it's well past it's sell by date now. Family Guy and Southpark are imo much funnier and relevant to viewers nowadays.

Same here. Watch Simpsons because I'm used to it, and family guy because I love it.

I wouldn't laught at the joke if I didn'e get it. There are only a few jokes of shows and celebities nobodies heard of that I didn't get.

But saying "Family guy has no relevance" seems ignorant. It does what its supposed to do. Cheap laughs and a decent plot. But the plot is mostly overshadowed for the gags.
I honestly can't get why anybody would hate family guy, exept for the fact that it replaced their beloved Simpsons. Even though the Simpsons are past their prime.

1. The Jokes simply aren't funny. That's coming from someone who found Kung Pow hilarious.

2. The show simply doesn't have any lovely characters. For example, Homer is and idiot. But kinda in a cute and charming way, and he always makes me laugh when he does something stupid. The father figure in Family guy, whatever his name is, on the other hand is just a ******.

i'm Catholic and i didn't hate the DaVinci Code. mostly because i knew it was poorly researched from a historical and artistic perspective. it's just a story. people overreacted.

and i've been watching Family Guy since it first started. i remember when the show first started and i was in middle school. it was hysterical then...ever since it came back it's been off. it's just not what it once was. i've seen every single episode of the show. it's caught up in its own hype, has completely removed any sembelance of plot, and has just interested jokes that are going to become dated a week after they air.

i've also never denied that The Simpsons is past it's prime, and should've been taken off the air a long time ago. the movie is also ten years too late, but i'll still go see it. who are we trying to kid?

providing cheap laughs and a decent plot doesn't make it relevant to a generation. that just makes it entertaining. the plot is nothing but the gags strewn together.

and i've had to explain several of the jokes/visual gags/references to people. especially if they're from a musical, 70s TV show, or from some random even that happened like ten years ago.

what happened to both of these shows?

and dear god...i fear for them bringing back Futurama.

They brought back Ren and Stimpy and it was horrible,
they brought back Family Guy and its just not funny (not really)
Didn't Comedy Central have The Tick for a while (new episodes?) and that didn't last.

I fear for the return of Futuramma too.

Ways to keep it good:
Same cast and crew- same voice actors for all the characters, ALL OF THEM!
Same animation style- nothing new and sleaker or fresher (no fansy new computer stuff)
same writers and such, same mood, don't try and be edgier and cleaner, or more relevant or topical.
Don't break Leela and Fry up, at least not right away.

If they just try and pick up where the show left off they should be fine.

I've been saying this for a long time now.

The Simpsons is a better show. Family Guy is a funnier show! Its like comparing Jay Leno and Conan O' Brien. Leno has better production values and guests. Conan is funnier! End of story. Both shows compliment each other.

As far as Family Guy sucking now...well...it doesn't! The problem with Family Guy now is that its not consistantly funny. Before they got cancelled every episode was HILARIOUS. Now, you get a good episode then a bad one then an hilarious one, etc. You just gotta stick with the show to get the good stuff.

One mistake you guys make is unlike all those other shows the network tried to revive, family guy is actually getting ratings. In the large scheme of things I think you guys are the minority on thinking its not funny.

My brother bought all the Family Episodes, and I tried, REALLY TRIED to find it funny but I found it dead, lazy, predictable, and a cheap copy of the Simpsons, with elements of South Park thrown in.

The only time I perked up was whe nthe dog swore, which says a lot about the show. I am English, and I found it too american, without the heart of the Simpsons or the brains of South Park.

Out of interest, when do you guys think the Simpsons got bad? IMO it was when they had the episode with N*Sync and the Navy. After that I jus stopped watching.

I also can't see how anyone thinks Family guy is a rippoff of the Simpsons. The only thing they have in common is that they both represent the average American family. But if thats the case then both shows are ripping off classics like the Simpsons, the jetsons, wait til your father gets home, ect. The shows are nothing alike.

But imo: Family guy> Simpsons in its prime> king of the hill=futurama > American dad> current simpsons. Never really got into south park.

I havent seen the simpsons in awhile because of work. but i caught a recent show the other week and couldnt stop laughing. I thought it was funny. I like family guy but its just not as funny as it use to be. I hate peter, chris, louis, the monkey in the closet, the prev. old man. the greased up def guy. the only funny thing to me is stewie and brain. they should just have thier own spinoff show.

Well every show has its fans and haters. Look at DBZ. You can find soooo many people on the internet who hated it, but look at how high DBZ merchandise sales and tv ratings were during its airing.

its hard to choose. id say theres a tie between which is better. but in the which is funnier department id say family guy. every episode makes me laugh.
