In fact one could take a host of fine actors and make them good film counterparts of the comics and most here wouldnt like it so meh

The basics youd need is

attitude
good actor
a stern look
film translated resemblance

and hed resemble someone like Liotta id feel, or Dillon.

Remember, a fan like me thinks different than a comic fan. I wouldnt go for the comics hulking lunatic look or hed look like Schwarzenegger...eh. : Id go for the more smooth but potentially nasty approach.

And Joaquin Phoenix... are we sure he wouldnt look like a boy?

first Bale for Sinister, and now Gary Oldman? how about Cillian Murphy for Gambit? or Michael Caine for Xavier, or Katie Holmes for Polaris, Tom Wilkinson for Apacolypse, Morgan Freemen for Bishop and Rutaguer Hauer for Magento...awesome

and we can just cast the whole cast of Batman Begins, and just make it xmen
