Horror Sinners - Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler Reunite

This was on the watchlist for my girlfriend and myself. We just have been so busy and haven’t been able to make it to the theater. But this weekend we rented it on streaming. It did not disappoint we both loved it. Everything about it overall was just so well done. I’ll be grabbing the 4K when it releases.

I really need to watch this again. There’s so much to love about it. The transcendent music scene was truly incredible and an absolute highlight. I’m glad that Coogler doesn’t want this go be a franchise, because as much as I want to see more from this world, I’m very happy with this movie and want Coogler to stick with his plan.

Spielberg also implied that he hopes that exciting young filmmakers like Coogler will come to watch edits of their movies in his new theater. Check out his comments below:

Sinners is a deeply personal film. It’s also a huge crowd pleaser and so deeply thought through. So many relevant moral points. I look forward to anything [Coogler] does.

late to this but finally got to watch this.

overall pretty great film.

there were maybe 1-2 scenes were the pace/ editing sort of threw me off, but that will probably go away after a repeat viewing for me.

the story, the characters, and everyone's acting were great - especially loved delroy lindo's delta slim! lot of good comedic moments with him :tearsofjoy: as well as some sad ones :weeping:

loved, loved, loved the music in this and how it's the driving force behind the story.
and the message of how music heals a community.

you call tell coogler and his team researched the hell out of this era for the film - like when remmick starts speaking toisanese to grace.

other directors probably would've had him speak mandarin or cantonese, but toisanese was the dialect spoken by most chinese immigrants during this time period.

there were times where this reminded me of some of john carpenter's horror films.

this was also like an arthouse superior version of from dusk til dawn (first half being like a gangster film , then second half taking place in a bar + vampires) - but this movie actually had something to say about life + society.

Finally watched this after all the hype...

Just an absolutely phenomenal movie.
The Batman avy got me thinking..

I think I'd rather see Coogler direct Batman in DCU over doing BP3. And Im someone who feels those films are massively underrated by comic fans. However, something about Ryan at Warner Brothers...between this and Creed they really let him have COMPLETE authorship.

Edit: James Gunn casually said they spoke the other day (About the BP premiere in 2018)

The fact they are recently speaking has me wondering if James reached out to him about a DC project.

Well, this was a hell of a ride.

I’m white and Irish so I’m not going to pretend I know much about black culture in 30s America. But somehow, this film had me hooked. It blends a lot of things together which on paper shouldn’t work - prohibition-era gangsters, blues music, sex, southern culture, racism, supernatural entities, themes of loss and finding your identity - and somehow, it all gels.

It’s an incredibly engaging film that’s hard to stop watching once you’ve started. Also incredibly original. The only story I can think to compare it to (and that’s in terms of atmosphere and not plot) is that old one of the blues guitar man selling his soul to the devil for fame and fortune. This film doesn’t go down that story route but it has echoes of that supernatural-meets—music vibe.

The cast was great all round but special kudos to MBJ who did a fantastic job of playing identical twins with just enough nuance that you can tell them apart.

Spin-off prequel?
I'd watch it. Despite Coogler saying that Sinners is a standalone story, there are more than a few spinoff prequel and sequel ideas that I'd totally be down to watch, like the Choctaw vampire hunters, Remmick's origins, Stack and Mary as immortal vampires, etc.

Watch this again at home and notice new things every time. At the end with old Sammy I couldn't work out if it was the name of the bar or just the band he was in, but behind him it says 'Pearlina's', which is the name of Jayme Lawson's character. So he still remembered her all those years later.
