I have the same attitude toward addicted smokers as I do alcoholics. Learn some damn self control.
you know damn well you could never do that to me.
other than the obvious damage it can do to you, alcoholics pass far more "unhealthy" markers to offspring, some of which might lay dormant for up to three generations before manifesting. And in addition to drunk driving, alcohol can, in many people, cause emotional distress which results in heightened agression, sexual behavior (I'm talking rape here) and lower levels of self control. Second hand smoke is bad but it's better than being in the middle of a drunken bar brawl (unless your me, of course).
Uh...no. Moderate alcohol consumption has been proven to provide some health benefits, particularly where the heart is concerned. In abusive quantities, yes, it is destructive. Moderate consumption actually has benefits. Smoking on the other hand is destructive to every single organ in the human body as well as adverse to internal processes and systems such as the immune, central nervous, cardiovascular and endocrine systems. It has been linked to heart disease, throat and sinus diseases, respiratory illness, auto-immune deficiencies, hormonal imbalance issues, high cholesterol and triglycerides, diabetes and much, much more. The ONLY health benefits of smoking that have ever been loosely identified are primarily psychological in nature (stress management, mentally therapeutic properties, etc.). There are no physiological benefits directly attributal to smoking in any quantity. Period. Sorry.

I'm not talking "moderate alcohol consumption". I'm talking about being an alcoholic. Which, if you knew anything about, you'd know that as an overall 'what's worse' situation, alcohol wins out by quite a bit.
Not talking alcoholics, just people who drink. Big diff.
It's funny, all the alcoholics I know are also heavy smokers
Always with the "I only smoke when I drink" BS....that's like 16 hours out of the day buddy.
I agree, though if a smoker could maintain to a few cigs a day tops I doubt we'd be doing this health concern thing at all. Personally I love alcoholics and good old fashioned drunken violence but I know I'm not in the majority on that. Self destructive people are generally more interesting than the health nuts.
Then you should have made that disclaimer when you made your ridiculous blanket statement. Now...let's compare how many people are functional alcoholics to how many people are regular smokers. I've got a feeling there are a lot more smokers (though some of them could fit the functional alcholic profile as well, so they bat for both teams).

I'm still amused by smokers who will complain about wanting to breath clean air when you fart around them.

There's also a lot more Asian people than there are American, but does that make one better than the other? No. Both are bad, but in the 8 years (I'm 21) I've been smoking cigarettes I've never once been carded to buy them. I am, and always have been, carded when I go to get booze. Even with a fake ID when I was 15 they'd card me ~90% for booze sales, yet never for smokes.
But again, that's me. Some people have a lot easier time getting booze than others, some with cigs. Some parents don't care if a kid drinks, some do, equal and opposite for smoking.
I tried that once. I was trapped in a room of my smoker friends so I let a long one rip. Seriously this bastard was like 10 seconds long. I was expecting at least 3 people to pass out but those bums just smiled and said it smelled like vitamins![]()
If only..
Since starting my 6 month hiatus from drinking(weightlifting reasons), I've been given the chance to observe my friends and it's really making me consider leaving the drinking game completely. I can't believe I used to waste so many of my weekends hugging a bottle of bacardi while simultaneously hindering my progress in the gym. Nobody seems to grasp the concept of moderation anymore.
This entire post has nothing to do with what I wrote. At all.

Alcohol worse than smoking? Elaborate please...unless drunk driving is the main reason.
You compared how many smokers there were to how many functional alcoholics, which doesn't make sense. I was responding to it, trying to enforce that which one has more people has nothing to do with how bad it is for someone.
There are no physiological benefits directly attributal to smoking in any quantity. Period. Sorry.

The man in my avatar would beg to differ.
Cigarettes have actually be prescribed by doctors to help patients lose weight. This is not routine, mind you, but some people have certain metabolisms which can be curved through nicotine consumption.
I guess it depends on what you would term "a health benefit" (most people who have weight issues severe enough to warrant metabolism manipulation are probably also at high risk for heart and cardiovascular problems, so smoking's probably not a great idea for them), but your referencing of a fictional doctor from a television show to support your point is...interesting.

One or two plumes of smoke aren't going to kill you.
Additionally, non-smokers should also learn to use their eyes so they can figure out where to avoid in case a smoker is lingering around. City sidewalks are fairly wide, it doesn't take too much to walk around the smoker.
Also, people who hang out with smokers constantly by choice and then end up with health problems get very little sympathy from me. Get new friends, find a new place to hang out... otherwise, the only thing those folks should be complaining about is their own short sightedness...
lol
'I actively become enraged'.
lol
Then there should be no problems for a smoker if I am farting on them.

Dr. House is fictional, but the procedure is not. The following is one study done recently which monitored the weight fluctuations of elderly smokers and non-smokers:
http://priory.com/med/cigsmoking.htm
Additionally, there are several resources online which show that this is an effective-- albeit risky-- prescription. For every benefit that one or two cigarettes a day may have on weight loss, there are more health risks to worry about, especially cigarette addiction.
I assume that those who already smoke regularly and try to lose weight are not prescribed cigarettes. Actually, as I mentioned, this isn't a routine prescription at all and is only resorted to in the most extreme circumstances.
Wasn't that grammatically sound, I wasn't sure.
This thread makes me want a smoke. Thanks a lot.![]()
