So, I got offered the chance to witness someone getting killed...

Well since it's tonight at 7 what's probably going through his head is: I should've studied harder in math. :oldrazz:

Ok, so the guy dies in 6 hours and Byrd has to be there in 3. Just gives him 3 extra hours to contemplate being dead. Fun.

(well, 5.5 and 2.5 now)

I suppose if I was in my last 5 and a half hours left on Earth I'd make the best of it.

But the guys a neo-nazi so he's probably ranting about how its all "A ****** and **** Plot to ****ing kill every good white person so they can **** there wives"

Well, I drive 120 miles all the way to the prison only to find out it was postponed until tomorrow. There was a temporary stay issued because there was some paperwork mix up with his last appeal.

Execution is on for tomorrow at 7

It was part of the job,so at least you get to deduct those miles from your taxes, or get reimbursed by your employer.

Unless they plan on taking it out of your salary, **** it. Drive around that town and get some scoops.

And by scoops I mean tail.

Well, headed out again. Let's give this another go. I'm abou t 99.5% sure the guy will be killed tonight. But then, I was certain about it last night too.

I dunno... How would you like being told, after hours of making your final preparations for death, OMG can we like totally do this tomorrow? We totally forgot some papers or something.

He's a neo-nazi.
You gotta make him squirm and feel as much pain and axienty as possible.

And, I'm back. It wasn't as bad as I thought. He died peacefully, while he was still claiming he was innocent. His last words were "I've made my peace with God. I'm ready."

The part that annoyed me was waiting. Me and the three other media witnesses had to wait in the media staging area outside the prison from 4-6:10. Then, we had to go through all these security checks and we were taken to a guard break room where we sat until about 10 till 7. Then we were put on a van and driven to the actuall execution, where we had to wait forever while guards checked the van to make sure none of us smuggled anything in. It was approx. 7:28 when he died.

Was it powerful hearing "I've made my peace with God. I'm ready."

Then watching him die?

Not sure if I'd call it "powerful". I mean, the guy didn't cry or beg for mercy. He said he was sorry his friend was killed, but he still proclaimed he was innocent and had nothing to do with it. He even stated he was a victim of the Sheriff of Oconee County, in a plot to set him up.

Was it a profound experience, or is it still sinking in?

I don't know. I mean one minute he was breathing in conscious, then they shot him with the barbituate and it was like he just went to sleep. I thought he was dead a full ten minutes before the doctor's came in and called it in.

If there was a humane way to kill someone, it is certainly lethal injection.

I can't believe prisoners were killed while conscious in the old days. Must have been a bit more dramatic.

It sounds like a heavy experience. Have your thoughts on capital punishment changed at all in light of it?

Not really. But I've always been on the fence about the death penalty. I see it as a useful crime deterrent. And for those who complain that the murder rate is high, think of how hight it could be if we didn't have capital punishment.

Also, I do sometimes think that two wrongs do not make a right. So, this experience didn't change my outlook much.

That's the problem, actually, there's speculation that it may not be as human as we thought.

I remember a while back, some fat dude on death row was saying it should be illegal for the state to execute him, as his body was too big for the barbiturate, and it would cause excruciating pain, as well as a bunch of other problems, before actually killing him.

After that, especially, I've heard a lot of talk about how that may be the case in every execution. I don't agree with the death penalty at all, really, so either way, I think it should be abolished.
