Ok, so for my physics for design class, i need to write a paper on the topic "knowledge is only an illusion" and how it relates to my specific area of study (film and video). My thesis of the paper is that a director's job can be one that makes a film filled with so much symbolism and whatnot that it's up to the filmgoer to interpret instead of the director directly telling people what everything means. hence, what one thinks about a movie is only an illusion as someone else's interpretation could also be the right answer.

i need to sources. the first is someone's interpretation of 2001: A space oddysey.

But i need a second movie, and i can't use the matrix.

any suggestions?

"Contact" would work.

So would the Bergman classic; "The Seventh Seal"

The Matrix Reloaded. :D

Honestly, it's too bad you can't use the Matrix movies. They're loaded with symbols and hidden messages. All you'd need is the special 10 disk edition with the DVD's that discuss those issues.

Actually another good one would be Hitchcock's "Vertigo"

Momento may not have a lot of symbolism (actually it might, I need to watch it again). But the whole movie is about the nature of truth, and even thought facts never lie, truth is still up for grabs, even when the facts are there.

It also touches on the idea that memory is all we are, all we have, and without them we no longer exist.

Yeah, actually I was going to mention another David Lynch work; "Eraserhead" - but that might be too much. :wow:

Good point, I thought immediately of Momento as well.

Right at this moment I'm writing an 8 page paper on Matt Dillon's antisocial behavior in "Crash".

Better that than "Pink Flamingos".

For what class?

Abnormal Psychology

It's difficult writing 8 pages on a character that was on screen for maybe 20 minutes.

My professor is an idiot

The Seventh Seal... Isn't that the one where the guy plays death in a game of chess? If so, that is great for symbolism.

It's too bad The Fountain hasn't been released yet, I bet that'll probably go sickeningly overboard on the symbolism.

considering he's a 20-something TA, most likely.

plus, thats the only movie i have from the list above.

and unfortunately, i'm still having a hard time understanding it, so that might actually work.
