So, what's up for Game of the Year so far?

It's going to be between Skyward Sword Uncharted 3 and Skyrim I am guessing Skyrim will win

Gamefly has sent me Skyrim so I am finally going to see what all the hype is about because that is the game that I've heard the most buzz about since E3 and I never even heard of it until then. I'm also hoping they send Skyward Sword in a couple of weeks because I haven't touched my Wii at all since getting a PS3 last year and I'm very eager to see how that game turns out.

Skyrim isnt a game you rent. Dont be surprised if you find yourself keeping it

Yeah, I want to see what its about first. That's what happened with MEass Effect 2. I rented it and decided to buy it the next day. But I've seen videos of Skyrim and I've never been a fan of first person games, but at the same time I like games that you can put in a lot of hours into so I want to try it before I buy it just so I know what I'm getting myself into.

But yeah, you're right about Gears winning back in '06, and they (so far) don't repeat a franchise.
They have repeated franchises before: Call of Duty and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won the AIAS Game of the Year award (although they did get a lot of crap for Call of Duty 4 beating Super Mario Galaxy, BioShock, and Portal). Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops were given nominations.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was awarded the GOTY. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was given a nomination. Same with God of War winning while God of War III was nominated, and Half-Life 2 winning while the first Half-Life was nominated. Repeating franchises have been considered multiple times.

You'll also notice that they award GOTY to the top franchises of all time. So I'd suspect that 2011 will award it to a franchise that has long deserved it, like Assassin's Creed.
No they don't. Goldeneye, Halo, Battlefield 1942, the Sims, Call of Duty, God of War, Gears of War, and LittleBigPlanet were all awarded the GOTY before they even had sequels (thus they weren't franchises).

And sequels like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life 2, Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2 are some of the highest rated games of all time, I'd say the near perfect quality of those games were what awarded those games the GOTY, not the franchise they're a part of.

I think the same. I don't think Uncharted 3 will win it. I'm sure it's a good game, but it's the 3rd in the series. I think UC2 got so much praise because of how big a leap in quality it was from UC1. It's also hard to give it the award when Skyrim looks incredible and I really think Skyward Sword will surprise people in its quality.

I'm surprised that you got a new release. I have always heard that Gamefly wasn't worth it because you rarely get the new releases. What has your experience been like so far, since you subscribed?

BTW, would you want to do some Uncharted 3 co-op sometime?

It's actually been really good. I mean they sent me MW3 on Monday (received on Wednesday), and now Skyrim, which I'll most likely get on Thursday.

But I subscribed back in July just to get Captain America and I didn't get it with my first free trial account, but I got it right away with my second account. But I think the trick is to make sure your queue is empty and you have the game at the top of your list on the day before the game is released. I currently have MW3 and the Splinter Cell Trilogy out with my first account, but I really wanted to try to get Skyrim and maybe Saints Row, but I knew it would be too late to send those games back, so I reactivated my second account since they were offering me a discount, and today they sent Skyrim and Lego Harry Potter, both of which will be released tomorrow. I think its more about timing and what else you fill your queue with because I've gotten games that I sent back immediately because I wanted other games that weren't as highly available.

But I'd say its definitely worth it and you get more than your money's worth if you don't normally spent a lot time with a game. Like Skyrim is simply a try for me, Lego Harry Potter I know will be an easy Platinum that I'll get in a week, MW3 is just for the story. The Splinter Cell trilogy is the only one I've had for a month and that's because its 3 games in one.

Yeah, sure. I'll probably get some playing time in during the weekend.

Just saw that IGN gave Skyward Sword a 10. I guess that means it will be a serious contender. Talk about surprising.
