This thread is spun off a debate from the Mass Effect 3 thread:

Which video game do you believe will either be the best or have a shot at being the best game of 2011?

To me, there's several games I believe will have a shot here are they:

Mass Effect 3 (If it is released this year. I don't believe it will)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - This is what I think will be the best game
L.A. Noire
Uncharted
Battlefield 3 (a big maybe for this one.)

EDIT: Let's base game of the year off The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.

The Last Guardian
Batman: Arkham City
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Batman: Arkham City - I look forward to this more than any other game this year.
L.A. Noire
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Is that the top one?

I just don't want to hear "Z won game of year with this" , and someone else say "But it didin't win with this".

I don't really follow video game awards.

I think its going to come down to:

Mass Effect 3
- the one I'm most hyped for right now
Portal 2
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Batman: Arkham City
LA Noire
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (as a wild card)

Its the closest thing we have to the oscars in terms of prestige. Those awards are voted on by the people who actually make the games.

Okay, then I'll edit my original post. Thanks for the heads up

Mass Effect 3
Batman Arkham City
L.A. Noire
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - and rightfully so, if you ask me. Morrowind was great, Oblivion was great, and this one looks 3x better than both of those. I've always loved the Elder Scrolls and even though SKyrim isn't out yet, I think it will win.

I think it'll be tight between Gears of War III, Batman Arkham City and Uncharted 3.

I think LA Noire is shaping up to be incredible.

Mass Effect 3 will be in the running, as will Skyrim.

I'm putting my money on Mass Effect 3 though.

The best game I played so far this year is Shogun 2. It's a good example of sensible streamlining without dumbing down to the point you are implying your audience are 14 year olds who play on Xboxlive You do not push a button to make something awesome happen and female characters breasts to do in-explicitly grow into a pair of beach balls. It also has the best graphics of it's respective genre and I found it far more impressive than Crysis 2. Creative assembly wont get there due in that regard or general over-all game of the year due to the way things work rather than the quality of the game itself.

It will probably be this or Portal 2 that's my GOTY. I was quite hyped about Battlfield 3 but the SP just looks like an over-scripted Call Of Duty clone. The bomb/wire trailer was just something that looks like a campy scene from a really bad 80's movie.

I probably wont buy Mass Effect 3, there is just something really, really smug about this game that's get on my nackers.
I think Batman: Arkham City could end up being a better game than Uncharted 3. Arkham Asylum was a good example of a linear game that gave the player lots of options of approach things. This wasn't really the case with Uncharted. Arkham suffered from copy pasted baddies, a fairly so-so cold story that a good TAS episode could beat and boss battles that probably looked better on paper. Fix the small niggles and it will be top notch.

Practically every game will win and slap "GOTY" on there box anyway. Doesn't mean much. Only serves to shift units. Gaming is still sitting in a shallow ecosystem of corporate coke cans on a production line.

I really get the feeling that Mass Effect 3 will get pushed back and release around the time ME2 released last year.

I believe it will come down to three games: Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, and L.A. Noir.

It's way too early though.

I think it will be a good game, but it is up against games with way more potential. IMO.

I think so as well. Not necessarily because the game won't be "ready", but rather because the holiday season is going to be way too crowded for Mass Effect, a series that has relatively modest sales, to stand out.

Though it hasn't got an official release date yet, so it could theoretically come out before the big holiday rush.

What bothers me about GotY is who says what game is the be all end all GotY? I mean, every magazine, show and website has a different GotY.

I mean, if one magazine gives Uncharted 3 GotY another one will give it to ME3 or Skyrim. The year AA came out I gave it MY GotY award... but just because I gave it that doesn't mean someone else will.

GotY is an odd title, IMHO because it's never one solid game. And the Spike GotY awards don't count...

The talent thats responsible for making them.

Thats why the AIAS should be the ONLY entity mentioned when it comes to GotY.

For me it's going to be tough. I legitimately love the Gears of War series better than most games, but Mass Effect is freaking Mass Effect. Then you've got Skyrim coming out as well. Between those three I'm most excited about ME3, then Gears 3 before Skyrim. I wouldn't count out Arkham City either because the first game was close to being a five star game IMO if it was longer and had a little bit deeper gadgets to unlock.

Yea its truly gonna be crazy. If all of these titles make it out this year, it could be one of the better years for big AAA releases. I mean im interested in a LOT of games that are scheduled to come out in the following months.
