The Gamecube had a lot of great games like Super Smash Bros. Melee., the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, and others.
Actually, there are no "others". That's about it. And even among those games, Twin Snakes was crap. Resident Evil 4? PS2 title. Super Mario Sunshine? I can't believe anyone would call it a great game. Metroid Prime 2? Underwhelming.
The Xbox had Halo, Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Fable, Dead or Alive 3, Dead or Alive Ultimate, and others.
There's Jade Empire, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory (the SC games count because they were significantly superior on the Xbox), Chronicles of Riddick, PGR2, Jet Set Radio Future and a couple more that I can't recall yet. If that doesn't prove that the Xbox's game catalog was superior to the GC's, then I don't know what will.
The main difference is that a majority of Nintendo's awesome games were first party and Microsoft had a good blend of great first party and third party games. That helped the Xbox out a lot outside of Japan....third party support. That and online capabilites which Nintendo practically downright rejected.
Whatever the case, it not a debatable that the Xbox had a greater number of good games than the GC.
