The Amazing Spider-Man SONY stops paying for 3D glasses...what does this mean?

I just think people are overreacting to what'll probably be a really unnoticable change.

I think Avatar is very lame in the way it copies Poccahontas. Nothing is really original in Avatar.

I like to refer to it as Dances with Night Elves.

As for the topic, this decision might be the beginning of the end for 3D so it could be a blessing in disguise.

:funny: I hope it's the end of *bad* 3D. Maybe it'll scare off the studios that don't care about the product and convert to 3D to try and make a bit more money from 3D sales, and the studios that actually spend the time and money to actually make a film tailored for 3D (Avatar, TAS-M, etc.) will stay and make good 3D experiences.

Avatar and the Spider-man ride at Islands of Adventure is the only time I've ever used 3D glasses. I guess its good for animation type movies, other than that I don't really see the point.

I've never seen a movie in 3D. Amazing Spider-Man will be the first.

EDIT: Actually, that's a lie. I've seen old style 3D movies (the ones with the cyan/red paper glasses xD)

Lets see what the theater owners had to say:

Lets see what happened to the markets that day:

Lets see what film junkies think about it:

Please excuse me for...cough...overreacting. :o And one of these for good measure:dry: You know the recycling box outside of the theater...maybe instead of just keeping the glasses for no reason what so ever, like you mentioned that you did, you could recycle them and help Sony curb some of the costs of paying for the glasses. I would say that was probably a factor in this decision. Good job!

You're so totally right. Let's go burn down Sony's headquarters. That'll teach them to not try to save Money and Resources...

...Or I could just use the perfectly fine glasses I got last time I went to a 3D movie instead of paying another 80 cents for glasses.

Problem solved! :D

I think this is another step towards the death of 3D...especially if other studios do the same. 3D already costs a lot and sure $1 extra isn't a big deal one time but think about a family of 5. Think about people that see a ton of movies. 3D tickets alone go up each year due to inflation so sooner or later, already imo, 3D tickets will be ridiculous. I try to only see 3D movie shot in 3D that also get great reviews as $5 extra for a 3D movie is a bit much to me. I go to the movies a lot so when 3D prices get up to near $20 then count me out...it is getting close in my area. I saw my first Imax 3D movie over the summer and I nearly died paying over $20 for a movie ticket:wow:

That's fine. I think that Sony is going to lose money on this deal. I think when people go up to buy a ticket and ask why it now costs $1 or so more they will be told that they now have to buy the glasses. The theater owners get together each year in Vegas and they are very vocal about studio changes like this. I bet we hear more about this next summer when it goes into affect.

I dont see it as too much of a deal...yet I dont care to pay a lil extra...I keep $200 on the side after every paycheck so I can treat myself (especially for situations like this)

why does this thread have so much fighting in it...lol

That's what I was saying. Generally if people are already planning on spending 15 dollars on a ticket, an extra dollar or two really isn't going to push them away. No if it ends up being something like 5 bucks then yeah, count me out. It's the economic law of utility. If people think they'll get enough out of the experience to pay 15 dollars for it, those same people probably won't have a problem shelling out 17.
the majority of th epeopl who will see this movie were not already planning on going to the theatre to see this a year prior to it's release. Most of the people will just happen to feel like going to the movies that week, and they will pick this movie or another movie. Or many will see the preview and then want to see it. However when they hear 15 or 17 dollars is the price, they very well might choose to rent a movie or pick a different movie or the 2d version at the theatre.

I really do not think Sony is very smart. I know I know, they are a huge successful corporation, but I think some of it is just luck and name recognition. In the last 15 years they made horrible decisions for Spider-Man as well as Michael Jackson's song selection on his albums. They cut incredible songs that have now leaked, and chose weaker songs to be on the album against MJ's will.

why? I don't know. It's baffling. This will probably hurt the movie's sales more than it will help sony save money.

I also think they forgot during tough economic times people are not willing to spend as much.

What I'm saying is, people go to the theater knowing what they want to see and they know whether they want to see it in 3D or not. Anyone who is going to see a movie in 3D to begin with, is not going to care if they have to pay 1 to 2 dollars more. For instance, if you go to Burger King and you always get a BK Stacker, but you don't know that they've increased the price .80 cents, you're likely still going to buy it.

And economic times aren't going to impact a 2 dollar difference. People facing tough economic times aren't going to see 3D movies anyway, or movies at all.

Exactly.

Sure, if it was even something like 5-6 dollars more, then yeah, you could moan. That's almost the price of one cinema ticket.

But 1-2 dollars more? If that's a make it/break it deal for you, then you really shouldn't be going to the cinemas to begin with.

It's not just the two dollars. The extra five or six for 3d already turns some people off. Now it's not just an extra five or six. It's an extra 7 or 8. And if your taking the family? It's like an extra fourty to see a 3d movie instead of an extra 30 because now we gotta pay for the glasses too. with the popcorn and everything, movies are becoming a luxury for the wealthy.

It adds up. Say they add on this two dollars, and then next year another two dollars, and then next year another two dollars. What I'm saying is when I saw Spider-Man 1 it costed me five dollars. When I saw avatar it costed 12. Now Amazing Spider-Man is going to cost 14 or 15? When a guy at my work will sell it on dvd for two dollars? and my friend has a 52 inch widescreen television to watch it on.
It takes two hours at my job to make 15 dollars. Yeah I'm a big spidey fan, so I will see it. But that is the only movie I will see at that price next year. So Sony really lost out on a lot of tickets from just me alone. Because I wont see any of their other movies for that price. They probably lost out on a hundred dollars alone just from me.

Same goes for any other movies I was planning to see next year. If this happens for Dark Knight, SuperMan, Avengers, MIB 3, or any other movie, I'll just take my business to Family video and rent it. That two dollars for me, my girlfriend and her daughter, adds up to like an extra 80 dollars over the course of a summer. That's a lot of money for us.

You forget that 3d is already 5-6 dollars more. That's pushing it by itself. Now it's 7-8 dollars more. that's passed the tipping point for a lot of people.

You forget the fact that 99% of people that see 3D movies decide beforehand that they're going to see the film in 3D. To that 99% it is 1-2 dollars more.

Who the heck goes to the theater and is like "Hm...should I see it in 3D or 2D?" People decide well beforehand. Said people who are ready to spend 15 dollars are not going to shy away when they see it is bumped to 17. Sure maybe 1 in every 50 people will, but not enough to kill sales.

I'm a business/economics major, this is what I've been learning about for 3 years. It's not going to make a huge impact, because most people that see films in 3D, are ready to spend 15 before they enter the theater anyway.

I'll be willing to spend whatever money I have to see this film in 3D.

Which isn't much mind you, due to me being a jobless 15 year old. :o

i dont care what the cost is either.. im watching it thrice.

Wow.

Where I've live, it's about £2 (...or a dollar or something) more than the price of a regular ticket.

it was 70 dollars to watch a movie with only 4 people last week...

.
My point is they will decide beforehand not to see it in 3d. Honestly at that price I do not make enough money in one whole 8 hour shift to take me, my girlfriend, and her daughter to see a 3d movie at that price. It's 36 alone right now without that added 2 dollars. Now it would be 42. With 20 for popcorn and soda?

that's more than I make in a whole day. Your an economics major. did you notice that revenue for movie studios is decreasing right now? Less people are buying them on home video and instead renting them, because it's cheaper. And did you learn that during tough economic times your not supposed to have inflation?
