Sony to buy Bungie for $3.6B

Bungie screwed up when they left Microsoft. Xbox definitely won this round.

I could understand them wanting to go independent but no point if they were going to sign a long deal with Activision. I think it's a good buy for Sony to fill a weak genre for them, but a bit difficult to call up antitrust when they are fighting from a superior position and also acquiring companies. If Destiny and future Bungie titles go exclusive (as expected), it might mean CoD also going exclusive which affects the casuals more (I definitely prefer sci-fi shooters over real life ones).

Think about all the things Micosoft got with their last two purchases. Now think about what Sony got for their 3.6 bill. And if they make Destiny exclusive, it gives Microsoft and excuse to make Call of Duty exclusive. The highest selling game on Sony consoles.

Exactly. I think the studio is a good fit, but the purchase overall will weaken their position as a result. It might allow Microsoft to get away with another big purchase before focusing on smaller partner devs. Also Phil Spencer had already bid for Bungie before and it was only price that was keeping him away, and people were expecting the price to be $1/2B. $3.6B seems very expensive considering Microsoft got Bethesda for double just recently. Also as Destiny was one of Spencer's favourite games, it might finally bring out "Nasty Phil". :funny:

The thing is, I don't think they are a good fit. FPS are a Microsoft/PC thing. I feel like they should have bought Konami, Capcom or Square Enix if they could. I wonder if the new Halo going over well made them think they don't have to concern themselves with Bungie.

Just reading some other forums and it seems people are saying Bungie will continue to be multiplatform. If so then this makes more sense as a Spartacus play.

Destiny 2 maybe. We will see about Destiny 3.

I meant as a fit to strengthen where they are weak (the others would be better for a cultural fit sure). FPS unfortunately are so popular nowadays and Sony can benefit a lot by getting stronger in that area. Square Enix would fit like a glove, but they are already getting a lot of their games exclusive without having to buy the whole company. Otherwise I think it might have already happened. Capcom would be a massive get. If they could get Konami to sell off just the IPs that would also be good, although they would need to build more studio manpower to make use of them.

Honestly, it makes sense to me. Bungie, to me, seems to have had more success on PC than on console. Which, is something Sony is definitely looking at shoring up in terms of their portfolio. It is important to remember consoles are dying in Japan. PC gaming is on the rise, which is why you are starting to see a whole bunch of Japanese devs releasing PC ports. Except for Nintendo, of course. I would not be surprised to see if they are looking at releasing a PC version of their gamepass.

Ehhh, multiplat will be PS and PC.

That could be what's meant. In 2022 these kinds of games seem to be more suited to being a platform that keeps growing rather than having sequels, but it would be better for Sony to have Destiny exclusive. I don't know if they've ever done a Minecraft and kept something multi-plat when the chance to go exclusive existed.

This makes a lot more sense if they really are starting to embrace pc (would be amazing for us pc users :D ). God of War had been top of the Steam charts for the last 3 weeks.

This only helps Microsoft. Because it puts people in their ecosystem.

"reach players wherever they choose to play"

Who knows what it means for the future but I think one of the reasons Bungie left XBox is to put games on PS4 too.

They paid too much.
Overpaying might become more common. There are only so many studios who can do certain things to a certain level and there are many potential hawks circling even outside of the traditional Microsoft and Sony (Tencent, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, maybe even Apple) that wouldn't have paid too much attention in the past before streaming and the growth of global gaming. Unless someone's looking to sell, the premium can be high right now but it's a competitive landscape. Some transactions might turn out to have been terrible deals but others will grow far beyond what their acquisition price might have predicted (Mojang for $2.5B seems a steal given Roblox is valued at $38B now).

Apparently Jim Ryan up for further acquisitions.

Chump change compared to what mS spent on Activision and Sony isn't even making them exclusive

Sure, they're overpaying just for the Destiny IP.

But Bungie also has their proprietary engine and tools which will be nice assets for PlayStation's first-party studios if they ever jump into the FPS scene down the road.
