As mentioned in the article, the Aricebo Radio Telescope was due to be decommissioned anyway. Back in August, a main cable snapped and caused extensive damage to the dish. At that time, there was some discussion about repairs. But when a second cable broke, the structure was deemed unstable and not save-able. The only question was how to safely dismantle it. Well, that’s now been answered. :(



That big suspended platform thingie above the dish is what fell down. :wow:
