Here's a fan plot summary I came up with. (Now Sandman IS in it. But it's pretty much the mere reference of him. His story isn't really expounded on, since there seems to be such a venom towards Sandman).

SPIDER-MAN 4
Theme: Hope & The Future

Characters:
Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Mary Jane Watson
Curt Connors/Lizard
Adrian Toomes
MacDonald Gargan/Scorpion
Aunt May
Gwen Stacy
Flint Marko/Sandman
Captain George Stacy
JJ Jameson
Robby
Betty Brant
Mr. Ditkovich
Ursula Ditkovich
Norman Osborn (flashback)
Uncle Ben (flashback)
Harry Osborn (flashback)

It’s been three years since the events of Spider-Man 3. Peter and Mary Jane are in a sturdy relationship, Aunt May’s money troubles have somewhat cleared. She bought a small home in Queens to be near the home she sold years ago. She’s right across the street and it’s almost identical. Mary Jane’s acting career finally has continued. Shows finally are hiring her again and she has quit her job at the Jazz Club. Peter is no longer a college student and instead holds a job as Dr. Curt Connor’s assistant. The death of Harry Osborn has only strengthened Peter’s determination to save lives as Spider-Man.

In one year’s time villains seemed to pop up everywhere! Doctor Octopus, Harry, Sandman and Venom! Doctor Octopus was drowned in the river. Harry turned to help Peter and died in the process. Venom was destroyed. This leaves Sandman, who was never finally dealt with. However, Sandman has promised never to raise his sandy hand against the police again. And he has decided to try and legally save his dying daughter.

The first few scenes really show what a good life Peter is beginning to have. Problems hardly ever come up. His wages as a photographer for the Daily Bugle are fair. He makes more as Dr. Connor’s assistant. For this reason he is always able to pay off his rent. Mr. Ditkovich socializes with Peter more often. He, often times, brings the most humor to the film. Ursula continues to be friends with Peter, showing hints of having a crush on him. Gwen Stacy, who has decided to stay in college longer, often looks up to Peter as a science teacher.

Curt Connors invites Peter to his home to eat with himself, Martha, his wife and Billy, his son. The love between Curt, Martha and Billy shows clearly. Though it’s also apparent that Martha is stressed about Curt and his experiments.

JJ Jameson often sends Peter on photographic errands, in which he comes back successful only to be beaten down into the ground.

Penny Marko is nearer to death than she was 3 years ago. The doctors inform Flint that he’s lucky he’s kept her as long as he has. Emma, his wife, often tells him that hope is the only thing they have left.

Meanwhile a mysterious creature is on the loose. Oscorp, under the control of Adrian Toomes tracks down the man, who runs loose through the sewers. They send camera robots after it, only to have them destroyed by the creature.

Curt Connors finally tests his serum and becomes Lizard! He takes to the sewers. The cops search for him. Spidey searches the lab for evidence and learns that Connors is the Lizard! He is determined to save his friend. He goes down into the sewers to track him. This only leads to disaster as Lizard ferociously fights Spidey, who hopes he can talk sense into him. It appears that the Lizard is controlling Dr. Connor’s actions. After a brutal battle, Lizard escapes. Spidey exits the sewer, suit ripped up completely.
Martha Connors hears on the news about a giant lizard and immediately thinks of Curt and his lizard DNA experiment. She runs to his lab to find it in a mess, with Peter researching the events. Peter tries to comfort Martha telling her to hold on to hope. Peter promises to save her husband. That night Peter spends endless hours trying to make a serum to transform Lizard back into Curt.

Meanwhile Adrian Toomes and Oscorp look through the cameras of the sewer trying to find the mysterious creature that was seen hours before. Oscorp immediately begins to tie in the creature’s appearance to Lizard’s appearance. Oscorp then begins to do research on the Lizard. They look through NYPD files which state the suspecting of Curt Connors. They then send armed men down into the sewers to try and capture Lizard to do tests on him! Down in the sewers Oscorp uses the latest technology to overwhelm Lizard. They take him in and do tests on him. Then to try and figure out how he was created, they do blood tests and try and match them to another source. The mutated blood type matches that of Spider-Man! Just then Lizard wakes up and easily escapes, full of energy.

Meanwhile Adrian Toomes and Oscorp look through the cameras of the sewer trying to find the mysterious creature that was seen hours before. Adrian learns of the Lizard and hopes to match his blood type to the other figure, hoping he can find him easier. They look through NYPD files which state the suspecting of Curt Connors. They then send armed men down into the sewers to try and capture Lizard to do tests on him! Down in the sewers Oscorp uses the latest technology to overwhelm Lizard. They take him in and do tests on him. They do blood tests and try and match them to another source. The mutated blood type matches that of Spider-Man, Sandman and, of course, the other creature. Just then Lizard wakes up and easily escapes, full of energy.

In rage, Lizard goes into the streets of New York, where the NYPD (under the leadership of Captain George Stacy) are waiting for him. Out of self defense The Lizard begins to take out cop cars. Just then Spider-Man shows up and tries to stop Lizard. This time Lizard runs again. Spider-Man follows. This chase goes all over Manhattan on the side of buildings. Finally Spidey catches up to Lizard and takes him down to the ground and through the metal hatch leading to the sewers! The fight continues in the water. Armored Oscorp men arrive at the scene to capture Spider-Man. They descend down into the sewers only to see the ferocious battle between Spidey and Lizard unfolds. Out of the corner of their eyes they spot another mysterious creature! Back at the headquarters Adrian looks through the cameras only to realize that Lizard is not the creature they’ve been looking for. Adrian then gives the command to take out the other creature. The Oscorp men then begin to chase after the other creature. Spidey finally knocks Lizard out. He takes him out of the sewers and brings him back to the lab.

Through the sewers the Oscorp men chase the mysterious figure. The figure turns back and fights them taking them out. He then looks on the jackets of one of them. It says Oscorp on it. Back at base Adrian looks at the image of this scorpion like creature. Adrian begins to look through several files on his Bionic Strengthening Suits. The name MacDonald Gargan appears quite frequently. Then the words “Test Failed” appears on the papers.

Back at the lab, Spider-Man does tests on the Lizard. He then ties it together with his serum. He’s almost done with the serum. He also ties the blast marks on Lizard with Oscorp. He walks into another room and when he comes back Lizard is nowhere to be seen! That night Spider-Man sneaks into Oscorp to do research about Lizard and what they wanted him for. Spider-Man learns of Scorpion. He learns of how Adrian Toomes used MacDonald Gargan as a test subject for his Bionic Strengthening Suit and how the test failed maiming him for life! He also discovers that now he, Lizard and Sandman are being tracked by Scorpion.

The next morning Peter visits Aunt May who talks to him about the future. They talk about marriage. Peter says he thinks he’s finally ready. Aunt May gives him the ring again.

Afterwards Peter visits the Daily Bugle where he finds a story about Lizard, Spider-Man and Oscorp. JJ is slowly tying the knots together! This makes Adrian Toomes scared. JJ sends Peter to snap photos of Lizard and Spider-Man and anything else he can find.

At Oscorp Adrian seeks to kill Lizard, Spider-Man and Sandman so the cops can’t trace their steps to Scorpion. And he wants to kill Scorpion so they can’t trace their steps to Adrian! First target: Scorpion. If they can take out Scorpion, the police wouldn’t have a lead even if they traced through the other 3 sources!

Peter and MJ are walking along happily talking when suddenly Scorpion pops out of the sewers with Oscorp police following him! Peter jumps into an alley to change into his Spidey suit. He snaps a few pictures of Scorpion and the Oscorp guards. He then topples over onto Scorpion. He knocks him into a warehouse! The two fight inside the warehouse. Scorpion shoots radiation beams everywhere trying to hit Spidey! Scorpion shoots a beam towards the roof which falls on Spidey. Scorpion escapes.

After escaping he finds Peter’s camera with photos of himself! He destroys the camera.

Back at the lab Peter has almost finished the Lizard cure. He goes back to his apartment to sleep after a funny scene with Mr. Ditkovich.

The next morning Scorpion stays inside the warehouse (which is his new lair) researching about the photos. He figures out that the camera belongs to Peter Parker. Now he knows the identity of Spider-Man! He also thinks that Oscorp sent Spider-Man after him! We then go through sad flashbacks of Gargan returning from the war to see his wife and children only to be taken away by Adrian Toomes to be tested. In the background we see Norman Osborn watching intently.

That night a restaurant Peter invites MJ where he proposes to her. (Bruce Campbell is in this funny scene as the Maitre d). MJ accepts. Just then Scorpion crashes in on the party and tries to hurt MJ. Peter fights Scorpion (without his suit on) in the middle of the Restaurant Constellation. Scorpion grabs Peter by the neck and drags him to the Daily Bugle, where only Robby is at, doing paperwork. Scorpion breaks through the window and throws the hurt Peter in front of Robby. Scorpion then rips off Peter’s suit to reveal his Spidey suit! Scorpion then demands that they use this as a story and leave him (Scorpion) alone! Scorpion then leaves. Peter and Robby talk. Robby promises never to tell about what he has just seen. Peter walks to the window just as JJ walks in. Peter turns around and swings away. JJ doesn’t catch a glimpse of Spider-Man’s face. Robby hides so he can’t be caught as a witness.

That night Peter sits on his bed as he has a flashback of his Uncle Ben as their driving to the Library in Spider-Man 1. Uncle Ben tells Peter that the future is something to look forward to and to hope for the best. Next we see Peter at the grave of Uncle Ben at night time. He places a flower down at the gravesite. He then walks before Harry Osborn’s gravesite and places another flower. He then promises to do everything within his power to keep Curt Connors safe. Back at the lab Peter works tirelessly on the cure for Lizard. Finally he has it!

Back at Oscorp Adrian learns of Scorpion’s attacks on Spider-Man. He decides to let this play and go after a different target. He chooses Sandman (as he looks at the new molecule destroying weapon).

At the Marko home, Flint is watching his dying daughter, when suddenly there’s a noise. Flint goes to check this out when suddenly a ray blasts through the window and hits Flint. This blast also kills Penny! Flint falls onto the ground in pain. Oscorp soldiers walk in and Flint turns his hand into sand. Another blast hits Sandman, whose sand hand begins to fall apart. He turns it back into flesh quickly. Flint raises his hands and the soldiers take him in to Adrian Toomes where they torture him. Flint learns that their also after Spider-Man!

Spider-Man goes to check up on Flint Marko when he finds half of his home destroyed. He then remembers the Oscorp files leading them also to Flint! Spidey storms the Oscorp headquarters and helps Sandman escape. Spidey and Sandman fight side by side to fight off the Oscorp fighters. Sandman escapes. Spidey finds Adrian Toomes and confronts him. In the test room he finds Lizard shackled and caged! They have tubes running out of him and blood is dripping from the tubes. Spidey demands to know what their doing to him! Adrian is furthering his test on Bionic Strengthening! Adrian begins to have a flashback of him and Norman Osborn talking. It appears, in the flashback, that Oscorp’s funds are very low and they need this Bionic test to be completed as soon as possible! Adrian tests the radiation test on Gargan. The flashback shows the complete transformation of Gargan to Scorpion. The suit becomes bound to Gargan. This was not supposed to happen and now Adrian is in big trouble. Norman then goes to his own experiment with the Performance Enhancers to save the company. Spidey grabs Adrian and throws him across the room, injects Lizard with the serum to turn him back into Connors and releases him from the cage. Spider-Man then leaves with Dr. Connors.

Peter leaves him at the hospital. He goes into room 583, which he remembers to be the room in which they did the autopsy of Ben Parker in! Peter begins to have flashbacks of Uncle Ben as he and Aunt May look at him peacefully resting in the bed. Peter leaves.

Back at Oscorp, Adrian Toomes slowly crawls from the floor. He’s bleeding out of his mouth. He turns to the side to see Scorpion looking at him. “Gargan! What are you doing here?” Toomes says. Scorpion tells Adrian how he ruined 5 years of his life! He took him away from his family and forever bound him to the suit! Scorpion grabs Adrian by the throat. Scorpion squeezes when finally guards come in and shoot Gargan. Gargan falls over dead. Adrian then commands that Scorpion be burnt. He then walks away.

Penny Marko’s funeral takes place. Afterwards Peter goes to Flint, who tells him that he’s leaving New York. Peter walks away where he has a flashback of the pallbearers carrying Uncle Ben’s casket. Aunt May, Peter, Harry, Norman, MJ, MJ’s mother and several others are present.

At the hospital Peter and Curt talk. Peter tells Curt that he has been saved from the Lizard nightmare. After a short conversation we enter the blood stream of Curt Connors to see a green liquid still moving around. We fade out.

Fade in to Peter and MJ’s wedding. They get married and the final scene is of Spider-Man swinging through the sky with MJ. They stop on top of the Empire State Building and kiss before the sunset.

THE END

The Gargan test on the Bionic Strengthening Suit was done five and a half years before Spider-Man 4 and before Norman Osborn became Green Goblin. Adrian Toomes’ failure on the suit caused Oscorp to go bankrupt causing Norman to have to finish his Performance Enhancers quicker, leading to the creation of the Green Goblin! If Adrian had not failed the test, Oscorp would not have become bankrupt! If that had not happened then Norman wouldn’t have been forced to try the serum before completing it and become the Goblin, which would have saved his life as well as Harry’s!

Now this is only a rough draft and leads up to Spider-Man 5 where Adrian Toomes continues his Bionic suit tests and eventually does it on himself becoming Vulture. Also the green goo in Connors acts up again re-transforming himself into Lizard. Kraven will also come into town to fight him. So Spider-Man 1, 4 and 5 are tied together somewhat.

What?

I think it's great (and I don't say that about all my works :P )

It gives Spider-Man just a tiny feeling of Jason Bourne... but not so much as to destroy the authentic Spider-Man feel... it also quickly gets away from the dark tone set in Spider-Man 3 and gets back to the lighter feel of Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2.

Also it gives us a cool behind the scenes look at Oscorp and gives us a cool twist...

it's like Flint Marko being Ben's real killer... except it doesn't strip away the character's origins or stories...

instead of making Green Goblin look like a good guy who's "just had a bad life" it just gives you another person who's reponsible for the Goblin...

it makes Vulture partly responsible for Green Goblin, which will make the Spider-Man vs. Vulture story in Spider-Man 5 much more personal... instead of Spidey just going after "some mad scientist"... again...

Way too many characters, most of them useless. I liked Sandman in SM3 but see no reason for him to return, especially to play a bit part like this.

Also, you're just rehashing the marriage subplot from SM3. I know the ending is different, but the rest of plot is just a retread of something we've already seen before.

Pros:

- Lizard (inclusion of his family, too)
- Theme (Hope)
- Peter's life is picking up again

Cons:

- Too many characters
- Retread storylines from SM3
- Too...video game-ish? (Robots and OsCorp fighters are straight out of the SM1 VG)

I don't like the idea that MJ and Peter's relationship is going swimmingly. The two went through a lot of **** in SM3 and only began to mend their relationship at the very end. For all we know, maybe when MJ began to tear up, she knew she couldn't be with Peter. Or maybe their dance was a way of saying good-bye. I want MJ in SM4, I just don't like the idea that they're engaged and already beginning to live happily ever after.

I'm currently recreating the story, btw... i need more constructive criticism... ;)

No offense, but why do you waste your time writing and then re-writing all that?! Even if it was an incredible story Sony aren't gonna make it into a movie so it's just a waste of your time!

It's called a hobby, calm down buddy.

OK point taken. It was just a question, i wasn't having an irate rant! I just like "over-punctuating" my posts!!!

Still blah...I mean, I will like anything with the Lizard in it, just because Lizard IS needed in Spider-Man 4, but it was a big re-hash, especially with Sandman in it, which we do not need...his departure was awful, imo, but needed I guess because Peter said "I forgive you." instead of just killing him, so, no, Sandy isn't needed at all...and the only two villains I would fancy for the movie would be Lizard and Kraven.

And keep Lizard alive and possibly kill Kraven.

... so you're suggesting that Sandy's "ending" in SM3 is sufficient?

Are you saying that NEVER seeing or telling of him again is sufficient?

It's like (if Doc Ock was still alive) having him just say "I'm sorry" at the end of 2 and never telling anything else about him.

I mays well rant about Sandman in this thread since I'm at it. :P

I liked Sandman in Spider-Man 3... just one problem... he didn't reshape himself into enough of different things... he used like 3 weapons... he needed more hand weapons of sand to use... also making him a huge building sized monster that just sat there and roared all the time was stupid and pathetic.

You don't bring back a character because there are still special effects possibilities for him.

Don't overcrowd SM4. Sandman's farewell in SM3 is sufficient enough to leave him out of SM4.

Well in regard to him being a villain or hero, sure, leave him out. But I personally think if you still have a person alive (main character) and he has a burning story that's left unfinished then it's stupid to not at least finish the story.

The man's daughter is dying! I want to know if she survives, if she dies, if Flint goes back to crime to save her, will Spidey end up helping him save his daughter somehow (with his scientific mind).

I think Peter should personally work hard to try and find a cure for her, to help Flint... that could be a good storyline. ;)

I think its best that Sandman is left out of SM4, to be perfectly honest. I liked his subplot, no matter how inaccurate it was with regards to the comics, but I think his story works better with the way it ended.

I would like to believe that Sandman became reformed. And if that were the case, I have no desire to see him working with Spider-Man, just like I have no desire to see Spider-Man team up with any other hero from Marvel continuity.

It the movies, Peter isn't the scientific genius he is the comics. Yea, he's smart, but there's no way he could develop a cure for some little girl with an unknown disease.

Saying Sandman should be brought back for Spider-Man 4 is saying Doc Ock should've been back in Spider-Man 3.
