Across the Spider-Verse Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse News and General Discussion

Wow, the potential OW number forecasts just keep going up. Was only recently I was seeing $80m expected.

Man, it is hilarous reading Deadline. It was like pulling teeth for them to actually admit it is going to open up to 100+, and now, still downplaying the maximum potential.

Masterpiece. Oscar for best animated movie is locked.

In terms of animation style, I still want to see more from Wish before I outright declare that it should get the Oscar.

Regarding the ending:

Did Miles lose his powers in Earth 42 or did I completely misinterpret that?

He didn't. He was out of web fluid, but he was about to use his powers to escape when the Miles-42 reveal happened

This was great overall. the 2nd half of the movie in particular was perfection! I think I preferred ITSV overall for some reason. Maybe because it was more simple? But either way, I had a blast with it. Spider-Man 2099 was a huge standout, and I loved the easter eggs! Can't for BTSV!

Early tracking today pointing at 39, which is right in line with Guardians 3 again (38.8 first Saturday). That would put it at 90 headed into tomorrow. Vol. 3 did 31 its first Sunday. So looking good for 120.

I wonder what the total domestic could be then if it gets a $120m OW. Hadn’t even considered numbers like this.

Given how big this movie is....shouldnt it have its own dedicated forum instead of just a casual post?

300+ seems reasonable to me, maybe 350 depending on competition. A few over on BOT think it could hit 400. I doubt it but who knows, it’s just day 2!
All very good numbers. Hopefully we see signs of great legs asap.

Not gonna lie. I prefer the first one to this. The story was tighter and yes, it was nice to not end on a cliffhanger. It felt like a true hero’s journey, and we got to spend more time with each of the other Spider-people instead of just Easter eggs and cameos. The score and musical cues also seemed more effective in the first one.

That being said, I enjoyed this one. The animation was just gorgeous, and the action once they got to Spider central was a visual treat. While I appreciated it taking its time, I wish we could have gotten to Mumbattan and the Nuevo York much quicker. The pacing up til then dragged a bit, with theme of Miles not being there for his parents a bit redundant in both the high school counselor and rooftop party scenes.

Still excited to see how they wrap this up. The cameos in this were fun but hope we get more screen time with the smaller team in the next one.

Me, my wife, and daughter just got back from seeing it. Damn good movie and damn good fun. My daughter absolutely loves it.
I’m not surprised your daughter loved it. Does your wife usually go along for these cinema trips? Great to see a whole family loving it. My showing was at 9am on a weekday so there were a lot of families and they seemed to be having a blast.

Sony will be really stupid to not pair with Marvel/Disney+ or someone to do some spin-off series of some of these characters. At least a Spidey-Verse show wherein each episode focuses on a different Spidey and fleshing them out individually.

No. She can't take the crowds. My daughter and I usually go, just us, on the Thursday opening nights. And that is too crowded for my wife. But the last few Marvel films ny wife has bought us opening weekend tickets at a MOVIE TAVERN. If you don't have these theaters in England, the MOVIE TAVERNS have reclining seats with extra room between viewers. You also get a variety of extra food you order and get brought to you. Besides popcorn and drinks, you can get pizza, sandwiches, taco salads, etc. It costs a bit more than a regular ticket, but it's worth it to get my wife in on the afternoon activity.

Yeah I’ve seen some places like that here in London but not been to one myself. Don’t think we call them taverns though. Seems like a fun experience. Also it’s great that by doing this she can join you and get in on the fun as a family. I wasn’t sure if she was interested in this stuff so great to hear.

Oh yeah, she's a big science fiction/comic book fan.....just hates crowds. Most of the time when you see one of the MCU movies reappear again and again on my monthly movie list, it's because she's pulled it out to re-watch.

I’m against this. Quality over quantity. Marvel tried to do too much with all these series along with movies and the quality has noticeably suffered.

I'm hearing a lot of reports of crowds not being too happy about the "to be continued" ending. My own younger brother saw the movie last night and he said his crowd was not happy.

Then again, I dont think theres reason to be concerned because i remember we said the same thing about Infinity War and that ended up grossing 2 billion dollars lol. But I do wonder if the marketing should have made it clearer that this is "Part 1." We geeks who follow movie news knew that but not sure about casual folks.

Unsurprisingly, it was great. I think most of my issues with this movie largely stem from it being written like a part 1 - the cliffhanger ending was telegraphed well in advance (this is disregarding that Across the Spiderverse was originally announced as a Part 1/ Part 2 movie) and spent most of its time setting up Beyond the Spiderverse, and there's no resolution for the heroes or antagonists (apart from Gwen). I was also somewhat divided on the whole "Canon Events" aspect since it calls the other Spider people's heroic actions into question, even though it was used in a meta way to help distinguish Miles' Spider-Man to everyone else's. But the overall movie stayed centered on Gwen and Miles in spite of all the multiversal craziness going on, the various art styles and art shifts were gorgeous (if a bit too much of a visual assault that I genuinely hope people aren't prone to epileptic seizure from watching this movie), the new Spider people were cool in their own ways and helped spice up the story without detracting from the proceedings, and in general I'm very much looking forward to Beyond.

It was really cool to see all the references/acknowledgements to the live action Spidey universes, and I was genuinely surprised to see quite a few MCU references. Given a certain cameo, I wonder if they'll get backported into future Spider-Man movies? JK Simmons as Jameson being a constant in various Spidey universes was amusing (guess we can safely say Andrew Garfield's theoretical JJJ is also JK Simmons). I also got a kick at seeing Peter B Parker having a book on raising kids, especially since my sister recently gave birth and our family are providing tips to her.

I can definitely see how people would think of Into the Spiderverse being better than Across simply for keeping things simple, and that movie isn't as long and has a proper conclusion. I liked Across being as much Gwen's story as it is Miles', but it definitely does take some time to get going after the Gwen focused prologue, and the ending was mostly delaying the inevitable of showing that things weren't what they seemed (at least on Miles' side of things). I didn't feel the runtime at least, but Into the Spiderverse was paced perfectly.

Still, Across the Spiderverse is a 9 out of 10 for me.

A guy in my crowd said rather loudly, when TO BE CONTINUED showed on the screen - "You mean we have to wait another 5 years for the end?" So yeah, some people are upset.

I dont think it really would make anything suffer exploring some of the characters solo. Part of Marvels problem is that everything needs to tie together to a degree and isnt able to stand alone which wouldnt be the same problem here.

And like I said a Spidey-Verse show wherein each episode focuses on a different Spidey and fleshing them out individually hardly is going to do this brand damage.
