Air tricks to slow his fall down and lessen the damage aren't good?
If they did what you ask (or at least what I think you're pointing at), they'd have to rate the games as inappropriate for 12 years old

Well out of the multitude of Spider-Man games that we've gotten that have been rather kid friendly, I think we deserve at least one that's targeted towards an older crowd. Not saying it has to be M rated, but one that sheds a little more darkness on what has always been pretty light. Looking at Web of Shadows, you can tell the developers intended for it to be a somewhat dark story but they just didn't execute it well. An invasion of symbiotes sounds like it would be pretty drastic, but the game itself just made it one big tedious task.

Not if you actually read the wikipedia reference and saw it was linked to Marvel.com anyway :D

I think the movement was fine in inFamous, and the movement was the best thing about Prototype.

But the Spider-Man movement in previous video games hasn't been how Spider-Man should move. I still hold true to what I posted in the first few pages of this thread. Spider-Man NG (next game) needs one button/trigger that allows Spider-Man to do all the wonderful things that Spider-Man can do. Still keep the web swing trigger, but the other trigger should be sprint/free run and everything in between.

Allow him to preform amazing feats just by holding the new movement trigger. Add a few jumps, some web swinging and Spidey should be all over the place....but with the player in complete control.

Hey Dusk, i'm pretty sure that was my post! I suggested that! Yay!

Yeah, I always thought something like the free-running function from Prototype, but with more fluid motion and various different acrobatic animations that let you just automatically dodge cars, chimneys, air vents etc anything in your way. You could be like flipping over them, swinging around them etc.

Then, have the combat from Arkham City but with the same specifically Spidey animations, so counters involve jumping over guys etc.

That would be an awesome spidey game right there.

Batman moved fine in Arkham Asylum.

Batman is an athlete. He should move...athletic. Not as much as Spider-Man but he ran stiffly and his limited jump (which i understand from a gameplay point) made him feel...timid.

As a game, the movement was perfect. As a BATMAN game, he didn't move right. (my only real gripe with the entire game)

I meant comic book superheroes, but yes, i agree. even if Cole was a little "floaty" in inFamous.

No, there were no problems with batmans movement. A jump button wasn't necessary. His athleticism was shown perfectly in the combat as well as his avoidance maneuvers. If beenox can make spidey move as naturally as rocksteady did with batman, we'll already be a step ahead of previous spidey titles.

He was a bit stiff. I'd like to see him look a bit more ninja-esque. Not too much, but a good in between.

Dark story doesn't mean not child friendly
That is the only one that not only has Spider-Man takes no damage from falling from the top of the highest skyscraper and take no damage, he also has a quick effect healing factor

Movement was horrible in Prototype. Controls were one of the worst things about that title.

I was referring to the one button sprint/free run, which I thought was fine. It was exactly the same as Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, which was also good movement.

Also, there were A LOT of things wrong with Prototype, and I would say the running around smashing stuff was the only plus as a whole, that and maybe the overall concept.

EDIT: Walking slowly was crap, i'll give you that, but when sprinting at full speed I think it was great. It was perfectly easy to sprint through the streets, grab a car as you, hurl it at a tank then run up a wall. Replace the car hurling with webbing up a net to stop a speeding thugs car, and sprinting with web swinging and that would be an awesome Spidey template.

About the overall tone for the "perfect" Spidey game, I'd want something of a mix between Uncharted 2 and Arkham Asylum. Some light and funny moments, some visually spectacular moments (Uncharted 2 has loads of them) and some dark, edgy and heavy moments.

As for the graphics, I've said it many times before but I'll just say it again since it's discussed now; I never really cared for the cell shaded ASM look in SD. I think it just looks WAY too cartoonish. I much prefer the more "realistic" look.

Oh ok. I thought the whole package was wrong as far as movement goes. You know the running, jumping in the air, gliding, switching powers to get different movement abilities. I dont think that was executed well and at times was confusing to control Alex. They overly complicated the control scheme and with so many powers, the buttons were mapped to places which didnt feel natural or intuitive

Maybe the animation of him running, but control wise it wasnt stiff. There was a good weight to him when maneuvering in combat and around the asylum. Batman had very deliberate movements.

Yea you deff dont want Spidey to go too deep, i mean the dude is a clown. They dont really have to give us a 'dark' story per-se, but i do think we need a more serious, personal story. Like others have said, lets give Ock or Osborn the spotlight. Lets have them out to take down Spider-Man.

Yeah I definitely agree with this. Serious and personal with Norman or Doc Ock as the main antagonist is the way to go! And I want their evil, sinister plan to be pretty "grounded" (I don't know a better word for it). With that, I mean that I don't want anything that involves extreme stuff such as different dimensions, mass alien invasion etc.

What I mean with a mix of Uncharted 2 and Arkham Asylum/City is that the evil schemes that the story is based upon should be deep and dark and the antagonist's encounters with Spidey should reflect that alot. However, the character of Spidey himself should be much like Nathan Drake in Uncharted 2 if you ask me. He should be taken by the serious situation, but should also still be a witty and funny character except for certain moments when it's not the right time to be funny. And he should have lots of inner monologue.

Also, Uncharted 2 is the perfect game if you want to see spectacular, cinematic and visually stunning sequences. I want Spidey to have something like those as well.

Spider-Man + inspiration from Uncharted = Great Spider-Man game

*Sigh* this thread always gets me down.

Let's be realistic here. A Spider-Man game with all the qualities of ANY great game would obviously make a great Spidey game, but it's not going to happen just like that is it?

Sure i'd love a Spidey game with the free roam of a Rockstar game and the movement of Assassins Creed and the character dedication and combat of Batman AA and the story and dialogue of Uncharted, because obviously, that right there is a perfect game anyway. These are all high 9/10 scoring games, so essentially, all we are really saying is "I would like a great spidey game".

(I'm just ranting, I wouldn't bother replying to this)

Just wanna chip in about the art-style discussion. Before I really wanted a realistic looking Spidey game, in the vain of 2099 at least, I did not like cel-shading at all. But re-playing Ultimate Spider-Man, playing some Borderlands and of course Shattered Dimensions I've grown fond of the cel-shading. I would love the next game to be in the same vain as the Amazing or Ultimate universe, it really fit the character.

And one thing I really hope they improve is the physics. Some of you talked about it earlier and in SD they were horrendous, you gained no momentum what so ever if you fell down/jumped down from a hight in that game, save the free fall sections of course. Overall the controls need some tightening up.

One thing I'm certain needs to be avoided is having Spider-Man a bloody puppet taking orders from almost everyone, that feature is plain annoying and stupid

Yea, this is just a place for us to vent. I think we all realize, we arent getting the Spider-Man we want, we are getting the Spider-Man Activision wants to give us. Which is a a short, simplistic story wrapped up in gimmicky catch phrases like "4 spider-men" and "lots and lots of bosses" all thrown together in a years development time.

Ah well, as Prof.Hubert J. Farnsworth once said, "a man can dream, a man can dream".
