There is something that I've thought about if this next game should choose to go open world, (or the next one, but whatever) and I'm gonna try to put it down coherently. If anything doesn't make sense or I'm plain wrong, feel free to tell me. Anyway here we go.
One of gamings biggest assets is that it can take us to unique locations, we all know that. I feel that Shattered Dimensions really excelled with this, taking us to varied places like the jungle, a sand quarry, an electrical plant and an oil rig. Not to talk about the future, which even if it didn't really do anything for me was cool. Now as everyone else I want and expect Spider-Man games to somewhere down the line return to the open world formula, be it the next game or a latter one. And I hope that the developer for this particular game really go out of their way to Marvelise New York.
See one of the best things about open world is exploring them, at least for me, finding all the cool spots the devs put in and so on. For me some of the best experiences with Infamous was climbing around in the prison and venture into Tent City climbing the Tower of Scrap. This applies to all the sandbox games I've played and this is where a Spider-Man game set in New York can both provide opportunities for the developers as well as a dilemma. New York have simply been done to death in video games.
Games that include an open world New York (of the top of my head.)
Spider-Man 2
Ultimate Spider-Man
Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
True Crime: New York City
The Incredible Hulk
Driver: Parallel Lines
Prototype
Grand Theft Auto 4 (I know it's called Liberty City, but come one!)
And if you count GTA3-era Liberty City it's even more. This is a problem because almost every gamer have been to a virtual New York, so the awe of it isn't really there anymore. I've been to Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Central Park a lot of ****ing times in video games and I know my way around the city pretty good without having been there in real life. Now thats the downside, the upside is that putting it in a Marvelised version really give them the chance to spice the city up. Because of the aforementioned games only the GTA's and Ultimate Spidey (haven't played WoS so can't comment on that) does something new with the city taking out the boring parts.
In a Marvel game it's easy because you have all these landmarks that you can put in to let us explore. The Baxter Building, Avengers Tower, The Daily Bugle, Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, the ESU, Avengers Mansion and all of the corporations HQ's in the city like Oscorp and Rand Industries. (And if Queens is in, Midtown High and May's house.) I know there are more places in Marvels NY but you get the idea. Of course a lot of these have been in games before, some in USM and I know Avengers Tower was in WoS but given the right flare and combined with the already existing landmarks NYC could really come alive.
Now I know that landmarks isn't everything and even the back alleys have to be given attention but that is another story. I haven't even touch upon how just using existing brands in the MU instead of making ones up for billboards would be fan-service. This is stuff I've been thinking about for some time now so thats why it became such a huge post, just so you know.
