Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

I'm pretty shocked at how many Spielberg haters there are.

You give me anything virtually universally liked and I'll give you some detractors.

I love Spielberg, but they will never have the balls to do the same ending.

Never ever.

Never ever.

If they did they would have to raise the rating, also I can see a few critics having issues with the twist at the end. Old boy is a ****ed up film that works best with an Eastern theme behind it.

Hahahahaha.... Wow, people say I'm insulting a movie... I think you've really insulted the depth of Munich since its not really that empowering to the Jews and Spielberg got a lot of flack from the Jewish community for it.
He should've. He also should've gotten flak from the Jewish community for Crystal Skull for ruining Indiana Jones.

This is just not happening... can anyone see Will Smith doing sex scenes with a girl 10-15 years younger than him? I mean unless they are hapassing the remake... but then it isn't a remake if they make drastic changes now is it?
Smith looks very good for his age, it's not like he's 60. Get someone around 19-22, and it's plausible for the story while not looking too awkward because of the age differential.

No way they'll follow through with most of the stuff in Oldboy.
They'll keep the basic plot of jerk gets put away by an unknown for 15 years, freed and has 5 days to find and kill said jerk. All with the help of a cute girl. Thats where the movie will end though the dark twisted stuff will be cut out.
That would be difficult to do. The final act is tied into the very premise of the movie. Without it, you have no story.

I don't think they will definitely leave out the big twist. Munich didn't really have a typical Hollywood ending or whatever, but not a lot of people saw it either. If they push it as a movie for the art house Academy pleasing crowd instead of as a popcorn film like War of The Worlds they could probably get away with it.

The thing is, I don't think a mainstream audience will digest all the little things about the twist besides the act itself.
Well, they don't have to. The film works very well just on a very basic level. If it has more complexities, then that's just an extra gift for those that like to look deeper into the narrative.

What specifically are you referring to though?

In the "beginning", or at the "end"?

Is this that one movie
where the dude falls in love with his daughter and cuts out his own tongue?

If it is...i'm sure its a given that Spielberg and Smith will NOT go that route.

that's the whole point of Oldboy. that's it's a bit twisted.

Take that away, then..well...I don't know. The concept of a guy stuck in a room for some odd years is cool enough but still.

Lol Might want to edit that one.

I take it then it IS the movie i'm talking about. LOL.

...if they go through with it, its definately bold.

But I really think they'll end up toning it down for us American audiences. :whatever:

Smith isnt to old for the role thats ********, the dude just onlyh turnt 40 right? Beside the Asian guy that stared in the original looked around 40 or older.

It'd be a totally different movie without it. There's just no point if you can't translate the basic plot.

Maybe they can use it as a marketing ploy, like the huge push with Sixth Sense: "Unbelievable ending!", "you won't see it coming!", "your jaws will drop by the end credits". Something that'll attract audiences in flocks, instead of alienating them.

Are you just repeating what I've already said?

can Will Smith physically do the part? can he keep up...that'd be my main question

...it's Spielberg. So yeah. Probably.

I was just thinking about this the other day. When the hell are Spielberg and Smith going to do a film together? It would be a great team. But this doesn't sound it. It should be an original idea or something else. Hmm, the possibilities. Dammit, now I'm getting ideas to write an outline for a film with Spielberg and Smith.
