***MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW***

Here is an outline of the events of TDK, it is listed by Character – causing some events to be ‘repeated’

Reading through this post will impossibly ruin the film for you because, well, this outlines every major event in the film. This isn’t just a few random things about The Dark Knight. This IS The Dark Knight.

(Brackets are for stuff that is merely speculation... or, you know, just stuff that goes in brackets)

Prologue:

We begin with a sweeping shot of the daytime Gotham skyline, tracking in eventually to a building… where suddenly a window is smashed explosively. Two guys -- in clown masks -- are next spotted flying down a wire to a nearby roof.

PRO.jpg

Cut to street level, where more clown-masked baddies are in a van, heading for the heist. One of the clowns is angry that their ringleader -- some guy called "the Joker" -- didn't even show up for the robbery. Another of the Joker's cronies reveals that their boss wears "war paint" in order to frighten his victims.

We see the clowns burst into the bank with their guns out, while the other two clowns up on the roof cut the alarm. One mentions that the alarm isn't feeding to the police just before he gets blown away by his partner!

The criminals are cutting open the safe and then -- BLAM! -- another clown is shot dead by his comrade. Meanwhile in the lobby, The Bank Manager starts blowing away clowns with a shotgun -- it turns out that he works for the mob. It's a mob bank.

Eventually the clowns take down the bank manager, and then they start arguing with one another, suspicious that the Joker ordered each to kill the other. It's a moot point though, for suddenly a school bus smashes through the front of the store and runs one of the clowns over. The clown bus driver helps load the loot into the vehicle with the only other still-living clown and then -- BANG! -- the bus driver is dead too.

The Bank Manage, still alive but wounded, says something that the clown doesn't like, so of course he gets a hand grenade in the mouth. Then the final clown takes his mask off to reveal the face of The Joker, who intones that,

"I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger. "

The Joker then splits in the bus, slamming the door shut -- the bus door, attached to the grenade pin by a string, activates the weapon, which rather than exploding releases a gas into the bank. Then the bus departs amid a stream of other school buses, making an easy escape.

Joker:

Joker meets with the various gang leaders, demanding that they kill Batman in return for their stolen money (prologue). Joker then burns the money.

Joker threatens to kill all the people on Gotham's "A-list" unless he is given Batman on a silver platter.

During Commissioner Loeb's funeral the ten officers doing the rifle salute are actually the Joker and his thugs in disguise. The Joker shoots at the mayor during his speech and then takes off into the crowd.

JOKER-1.jpg

After Jokers initial plan falls through Joker threatens to destroy the city (At one point appearing on TV in a bar talking about blowing up all the bridges "Starting tonight. People will die. I'm a man of my word")

Gotham is then evacuated on to boats. It turns out that this was Joker's plan and the boats are rigged with bombs.

One boat is filled with prisoners another with upstanding citizens. There is a timer counting down to the bombs going of. There is also a button on each boat. If the criminals push the button on their boat the timer stops and they are saved but then the upstanding citizen's boat blows up. And vice versa.

**Climax Spoiler** The tattooed prisoner ends up sacrificing himself and the other prisoners by taking the initiative to destroy the prisoner's boat in order to save the lives of the "Gotham elite." Ruining Joker’s grand plan.

At one point we get to see what Joker looks like to someone under the influence of Fear Gas. (Joker looks much more in line with his comic book counter part at this point)

Rachel:

Maggie has a bigger role than Katie did in Begins. The whole film really builds on what groundwork was laid in Begins.

Rachel is dating Dent

Unable to capture Dent at Bruce's penthouse party the Joker kidnaps Rachel instead (perhaps because of her relationship with Dent).

Gordon:

Gordon picks up Reese from the TV station and is tailed by Bruce Wayne- a group of crooked cops try to run Gordon/Reese off the run but Bruce speeds up and crashes into the cops - Gordon arrests them and him and Bruce Wayne meet for the first time.

After Joker's truck flips Joker is arrested by Gordon.

After an argument with Harvey Dent Gordon SMASHES the bat signal with an axe.

During Commissioner Leob's funeral the ten officers doing the rifle salute are actually the Joker and his thugs they attempt to assassinate the mayor. Gordon tries to save the Mayor.

At some point Gordon FAKES his death. When his wife Barbara is notified of his death she blames Batman.

Mr.Lau

A money launderer from Hong Kong with ties to Wayne Corp. He is prosecuted by Dents office

Bruce has a "plan" for Lau

Fox meets with Lau in Hong kong

Harvey Dent/Two-Face:

DENT.jpg

Dent claims to be Batman in order to save the A-listers. Because of this the Joker crashes a party at Wayne penthouse which Harvey is attending. Bruce is able to hide Harvey before Joker gets him. Joker then kidnaps Rachel.

Harvey and Rachel go to the Opera only to find out that the entire cast is at a party on Bruce Wayne’s yacht.

Dent is scarred by Rossi during a court scene. "I'll show ya hostile" - also: ACID!

Two-Face goes after Maroni.

Moroni's driver is killed but Two-face's coin spares Maroni.

Dent also goes after a crooked cop in a bar: Bartender: "Dent! I thought you were dead?" - Harvey:"Half"

Ramirez calls Barbara and gives her Two-face's instructions.

Mike Engel:

A hot shot TV host who, in connection with Reese, gets information on Batman's identity (whether he knows its Bruce or thinks its someone else is unknown)

Engel Promises to reveal the identity of Batman, but Joker interrupts (makes his own broadcast or phones in some kind of bomb threat)

Reese:

Attempts to Blackmail Fox in order to get Batman's identity.

May be responsible for a break in at the research and development section of Wayne Enterprises. (Fox's former division)

After visiting Mike Engel at the TV station he is picked up by Gordon. Bruce Wayne tails them in his Ferrari -- a group of crooked cops try to run Gordon/Reese off the run but Bruce speeds up and crashes into the cops.

Scarecrow:

One of the earlier scenes in the film involves the Scarecrow and other gangs. The bat mobile bursts through the wall but Batman isn't in it. Bats then comes down the middle of the parking garage and lands on top of Scarecrows van.

scarecrowdb0.jpg

"Fake" Batmen

A vigilante (one of the fake bat-men) is hung from a street light. (It hits the window while Dent is talking to the Mayor about his plan for 18 months crime free)

Berg

Officer Berg is a younger officer that works with Gordon

His wife was in the hospital explosion, causing Berg to try to assassinate the Joker.

__

THE ENDING ***SPOILERS****
(and other details left out above)

Rachel and Harvey are kidnapped.

Joker gives Batman there addresses

Batman goes to save Rachel. Gordon goes to save Harvey.

When Batman gets to where Rachel is he finds Harvey. There is an explosion and Harvey is scarred.

Gordon shows up where Dent is supposed to be late, there is an explosion and Rachel dies.

Two-Face blames Gordon for the death of Rachel so he takes his family hostage.

Batman shows up and Two-Face is killed (Not by Batman)

Joker does NOT die in TDK – he is arrested at the end

Two-Face is dead. All the way Dead.

Batman takes credit for the people two-face killed (the guy in the bar etc. - which happens before two-face's 'actual' death) so the the image of Harvey Dent is not ruined.

Batman goes on the run.

you have all this make-up, but give me this clear-cut answer.

make up or bleached skin? not trying to troll or start a war, just want to know

No one knows... this is for things that are pretty much certain at this point or confirmed. Not things we are unclear on.

Wait, did I miss something? Where did it say that AMH is playing Reese? The call sheet had another actor on the call sheet. It sounds a little farfetched for them to change the actor's name on a call sheet, which is only supposed to be for the eyes of the cast and crew.

Good thread, didn't know all of that, especially the part about Joker and the boats.

May I ask, why do some comments have a green arrow next to them?

-Dent is scared by Rossi during the court scene

I don't think that we can be 100% sure that this is what happens from the sides. It sounds like it, but we can be misinterpreting the scene. From what it sounds like, Dent's in a courtroom a lot in this movie.

Twists...I assume.

Or large plot-points.

Socko the ferry parts are in the sides. They're seem like some of the better scenes there.

Joshua Harto is playing Reese. AMH (at this point) seems to be playing a TV reporter who might be Mike Engel.

Gordon arrests the Joker after Batman stops his truck

Mr.Lau is a money launderer from Hong Kong with ties to Wayne Corp. He is prosecuted by Dents office.

Joker is actually hiding from his henchmen in plain sight. They don;t know he's with them when they do the robbery.

Bat vigilantes are either copycats or mobsters disguising their crimes. One vigilante, Brian, is captured and interogated by the Joker. A vigilante (or maybe an effigy) is also hung from a street light.

great thread, there is alot i didn't know. especially that two-face had that big of a part

Rachel:

Maggie has a bigger role than Katie did in Begins. The whole film really builds on what groundwork was laid in Begins. Many story lines are set up for the third film, and Maggie will play a big part in that.

Unable to capture Dent at Bruce's penthouse party the Joker kidnaps Rachel instead.

Is there confirmation that is the Joker? We've all assumed it's the Joker, but the dialogue really does come off as Crane/Scarecrow

no confirmation. but there is a line like "Look at my face" or something like that. And it just makes more sense it would be the Joker. To me at least.

Heath IS the Joker from the movies opening shot. However, his character becomes more and more demented as the film progresses. There is no "origin"
No origin, per se. Anjow did report, though, that there would be a vague montage that explained why the Joker was the way he was, but not necessarily how he came to be.

You also might want to add that she's dating Dent.

Barbara gets a phone call from Two-face with his instructions
Not quite. Barbara gets a phone call from Ramirez, who gives Babs Dent's instructions.

It is Scarecrow who sees Joker while under the influence of Fear Gas.
This has never been reported. It's been reported that someone sees the Joker under fear gas influence, but never stated that it was Scarecrow specifically.

but there is a line like "Look at my face" or something like that. And it just makes more sense it would be the Joker.
Not really. The line is "Look at me" anyhow, and the guy's horrified by what he sees. Could be Face or Joker, really.

I'm speculating just like everbody else that it's the Joker, but we were have this conversation a few days ago and I wrote the following about that piece of the script, and it has had me wondering since:

Read this hearing Cillian Murphy's montone Dr. Jonathan Crane psychiatrist voice. You know, how he kind of talks to people like they're children? Then, once you reach "LOOK AT ME" switch to the Scarecrow fear gas voice:

INT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT

BRIAN, wearing a makeshift AVENGER costume - face bruised and bloody - is tied to a chair. In some kind of bright, fluorescent lit room.

VOICE (O.S.)
Tell them your name.

BRIAN
(weak)
Brian Douglas.

VOICE (O.S.)
Are you the real Avenger?

BRIAN
No

VOICE (O.S.)
Why do you want to be like him?

BRIAN
He's a symbol...that we don't have to be afraid of scum like you...

VOICE (O.S.)
But you do, Brian. You really do. You think he's helped this city?

BRIAN nods uncertainly...

VOICE (CONT'D)
Look at me.
(Brian looks down)
LOOK AT ME!

Brian looks up horrified

Scarecrow definitely could work there.

Wow, lots of small stuff I didn't know. Great thread.

Sounds more like Joker dialogue to me, from what I see there this seems like one of the reasons The Joker becomes obsessed with Batman.

Can anyone provide some clarity on this one? The blowing each other up bit seems confusing...

Can anyone provide some clarity on this one? The blowing each other up bit seems confusing...

My guess:
Each boat has a button on it with instructions saying "If you press this button, the other boat blows up.
But if you wait too long, they may blow your boat up ... CHOOSE NOW!"

I did a quick update based on what has been posted so far.

or she's killed.

I didn't add that becuase that is just recent speculation. Early sources (back in Miranda's "spoilers ahoy" thread) were very adamant that Rachel survived. If we get any more reports that say she will be killed I will edit the first post.
