SQUID is in the movie! (spoilers!)

The squid itself is a nod. Like the Joker wearing purple. It is nod because it recalls the comic book.

No, the Joker wearing purple was not a nod. If the Joker wore black the whole movie, then at one point made a small comment about purple, that would be a nod. Like Wolverines "yellow spandex" comment.

A nod is a quick reference. Using the thing itself is not quickly referencing it.

Is that what you really think? Do you really believe that Snyder was like "man, that squids stupid, so lets take it out. Then to tease all those fans that really want it, we'll call the device S.Q.U.I.D. and laugh."?

Also, minor pet peeve, but it's "would have been" not "would of been".

No I don't think that is what Snyder thought. I don't think he gave much thought to the squid at all. Probably one of the first things he dropped. Not "real" enough for him.

And please no comments on my American (little if any English in America anymore). I am just happy I can communicate thanks to the California school system.

How about we call it a wink then. What would you call the scene in Transformers where we see the VW Beetle?

I call it a way of covering up the fact that they made a mediocre film, with childhood nostalgia.

Again, it's a time thing. It requires a lengthy amount of time to set up the subplot of missing artists and the island and everything. Instead they're able to tie the whole plot into the project Jon and Adrian are working on together. All the development for it happens in scenes that also work to build the main characters, instead of having to introduce Max Shea and such.

I don't think that had anything to do with it. It doesn't need much set up at all. Ozy tells them what he did, beams it in, all hell breaks loose. Probably what is going to happen with the new plot itself. I think Snyder knew it was a long shot to even get it to the drawing board, so he came up with the nuke/Doc thing. Which while terribly streamlined and the plot of far to many movie/television shows, is exactly what the studio execs love.

No, both plots will need to be developed throughout the movie. You cant just have Ozy bring it up out of nowhere. For the squid to not seem out of place, you need to have the scientists and artists go missing. You need to have The Black Freighter, so people know who Max Shea is, you need the scenes of the people on the island, and then leaving the island, and the boat exploding.

With the new plot, you have that machine that Jon is working on when Rorschach first visits him. Then there' the project him and Adrian are discussing while Jon's multiples are in the other room freaking Laurie out. Also apparently there's a little bit about it when the two meet at Blake's funeral.

Notice how in one case, all that has to happen in extra scenes, purely for the development of this plot, whereas in the other case, it happens in scenes that would exist otherwise, and take the place of otherwise useless stuff, like Jon looking for gluinos or whatever.

The whole point of the squid is that it is out of place. Something alien and horrific no one, including the reader saw coming.

So then what do you say to all the stuff I just pointed out, then? Did I just imagine those pages of the island, and Max Shea? Did I make that up?

Whatever build up there is in the book is done in such a way that you don't know what is coming out the other end.

And that's no different in the movie. It's not like Jon is like "Sorry Rorschach, but i'm building a device that Adrian will later use to blow up the city." Or Jon and Adrian shake hands at the funeral and say "so, how about that city-destroying machine".

They're both unpredictable, but they still need some kind of precident in the book. The kind of thing that makes you go back and think "oh, so THATS what that was all about".

Indeed.

He didn't drop it. He just didn't put it back in. There's a slight difference. And no, actually, he did cut it for time reasons. He said so himself, if you'll recall. Or do you just like making things up instead of digging a little? If you really think time is not an issue and Snyder was just pretending that it would be hard to film, by all means go out and make your own version of Watchmen. We'll wait.

Also, you're clearly not a linguist. Don't pretend to be one.
