Star Trek Online promises some exclusives for console players

August 22, 2016 21 Comments

Let’s assume, for a moment, that you earn current generation consoles but still haven’t jumped into Star Trek Online up until now. What’s going to draw you into the console edition of the game? Perhaps free stuff?

Because that’s going to be offered to players who beam into the game when it launches on console.

Players who start in on the Xbox One console version will receive a free Steamrunner-class Blockade Runner Escort, while PlayStation 4 users will receive an Andorian Light Cruiser; both ships are Tier 1 starships. Players who link their accounts with Arc will also get Khan’s outfit from the eponymous film, while PS Plus subscribers get the Wrath of Khan Starfleet uniforms.
The developers are also planning to offer Federation, Klingon, and Romulan starter packs filled with useful ships for new players, so keep your eyes peeled for details about those. Regardless, you’ll be getting some free stuff for jumping into the game on console, providing just a bit more incentive to sit down on the couch and trek through some stars.

Man, I'm really looking forward to playing this on console. I played for a bit on my laptop like two or three years ago, and really liked it. So, looking forward to trying it out on either PS4 or XB1.

My computer started going downhill about a year ago and has had trouble running a lot of the games I used to play on it, STO included, so looking forward to playing it on console, definitely want to recreate some old screenshots I took back on PC.

Star Trek Online has launched for Xbox One and PlayStation 4

September 6, 2016 16 Comments

Star Trek Online is live today on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, according to tweets from PWE’s Salami Inferno.

The launch comes amidst PWE’s latest push for lifetime subscriptions, which are currently 33% off for console players from today until September 20th (that knocks the price from from about $300 to about $200).

Any of you folks playing, or are you entrenched on PC?
The launch trailer’s tucked down below too!

I've downloaded it and started playing. It's taking a little getting used to, but feels like it's pretty good on consoles. The tutorial feels lengthy, though. Still haven't finished it. But, it's definitely scratching that itch I've had for a Star Trek game. I'm eager to down to the content once I get out of the tutorial missions.

I wish they had account sharing. I mean, I only spent like $10 on pc for The Original Series ship and uniforms. And I'm honestly not opposed to re-buying TOS stuff on consoles. But, because I switch consoles with my brother being able to access that content on PS4 and XB1 would make buying that stuff an easier decision. I don't even need to transfer my Captain, but the paid content...I just wish I could.

Star Trek Online adds to its Agents of Yesterday expansion

September 29, 2016 6 Comments

Cryptic isn’t finished with the time travel goodness of Star Trek Online: Agents of Yesterday — not by a long shot. The studio announced today that it has plans extending into 2017 to continue the expansion’s storyline, starting with a major update coming next month.

Star Trek Online’s Artifacts update will requisition a new story arc, the much-ballyhooed lighting upgrades that are already on the console version, and the original series K-13 starbase fleet holding.

“Players will accompany the Lukari on a mission to an alien solar system, where they will discover the joys of exploration, the dangers of unknown space, and begin to unravel a mystery that will have long lasting consequences,” Cryptic teased in its announcement post.

Star Trek Online previews its next featured episode, Echoes of Light

October 20, 2016 Leave a comment

You can try to hide from the rest of the galaxy in Star Trek Online, but even though the galaxy is a very large place, it can also be very small. Sooner or later, things catch up with you.

So it’s probably for the best that the heretofore reclusive Lukari species is taking its first tentative steps into exploring the galaxy as a whole. It’s all thanks to the Federation and the Klingons, and you can be right there as it happens with the game’s next featured episode, Echoes of Light. Of course, the thing about exploring the galaxy is that it’s filled with all sorts of things, not all of them friendly or safe.

That means that just accompanying the Lukari on their first steps outward will likely involve finding at least one or two dangerous things along the way. Players of all factions will be able to play through the episode with its launch, complete with special rewards for anyone who completes the mission during its initial three-week launch. So get ready to explore the galaxy… or at least show another race the fun of exploring it.

STAR TREK ONLINE ROLLS OUT AGENTS OF YESTERDAY: ARTIFACTS

October 25, 2016 Eliot Lefebvre 3 Comments

The Temporal Cold War has wrapped up in Star Trek Online… for now, anyhow. That’s the thing about time travel; it never really ends, exactly. But it’s time for players to move on to other things, and the newest update to Agents of Yesterday centers around exactly that.

Players can start up the new storyline centering around the tentative steps of the Lukari into the big galaxy of exploration, with a different award available each week starting with a Nausicaan disruptor array. If the storyline alone isn’t enough for you, you can also take part in constructing a new fleet holding. And it’s all going to look a lot better, as the various graphical enhancements provided for Star Trek Online on consoles are now available on the desktop as well. So it’s a better-looking galaxy full of strange new worlds to explore, and who could ask for more?

Star Trek Online reports over a million console captains in a new infographic

October 27, 2016 5 Comments

A couple of players have been attracted to Star Trek Online on console, and by “a couple” we mean “a little over one million.” That’s the biggest takeaway from the new infographic about the game’s console version on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but there are plenty of additional fun facts in there for fans of the game or just curious onlookers from the PC side.

Tactical Federation captains make up the largest amount of players in the game, as 68% of players are Federation and 59% chose a Tactical specialization.

The infographic also breaks down the most popular ships per faction on each console, although both PS4 and XB1 players love the Negh’var for a Klingon ship. Check out the full infographic just below (click for a larger version if you can’t read it).

Star Trek Online brings the duty officer system to consoles

November 9, 2016 4 Comments

As we well know by now, a console edition of a PC MMORPG usually doesn’t contain all of the same features and updates. There’s always patch lag to consider as updates wind their way to release, as well as the difficult work of modifying PC features for a console.

So while Star Trek Online has reportedly seen success on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it has been missing some of the elements seen in its big brother on the PC. One of these used to be the duty officer system, however this is changing soon as the feature is headed to consoles “soon.”
For the unfamiliar, the duty officer system is a strategy minigame in which players accumulate unseen NPCs and can dispatch them on real-time missions that rake in XP and other rewards. The “doff” system, as it is informally called, can be very lucrative, especially in leveling up one’s character. You can read more about it on the official site.Read more

Star Trek Online gives an admiralty system primer

November 11, 2016 3 Comments

While Star Trek Online PC players may be well acquainted with the admiralty system by now, it’s brand-new to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 crowd. Due to this, Cryptic has cobbled together a basic primer that covers how this system works and what players can get out of it.

Similar to the duty officer system, the admiralty system allows players to queue up tasks that are carried out in real time and (hopefully) result in useful rewards. Instead of using duty officers, the admiralty system puts a players’ entire fleet of acquired ships and shuttles to work — even the one that the player is currently flying.
By progressing through an entire admiralty campaign, players are rewarded with epic-quality ships. The system is only available to captains level 52 or higher.Read more

Star Trek Online’s winter event adds Klingon ice fishing, gives out free prize packs

December 1, 2016 18 Comments

Break out the tacky sweaters and replicate some eggnog, because Star Trek Online’s winter wonderland event is back. This year, the team has added a new Klingon ice fishing minigame to keep things interesting and full of frostbite. By punching through the ice and dragging up enough candy fish, players can summon a boss mob for extra rewards.

The big prize this holiday season is a T6 Breen Chel Boalg warship, which can be attained by collecting 1,000 prize vouchers from the winter event ice skating race. It’s an intimidating ship to be sure, and you can review all of its impressive stats before deciding whether or not to grind for it.

Star Trek Online also updated with a patch this week that, among other things, reorganized its accolades. There’s also a new Phoenix Prize Pack lockbox — but instead of this being a cash lockbox, it’s instead purchasable for dilithium. Even better, all players who log in will get a free prize pack once per day from December 1st through the 8th.Read more

Star Trek Online drops support for Windows XP and older graphics cards in 2017

December 5, 2016 11 Comments

Fans of Star Trek Online, it is time to update your computers! At least, it’s time if you’ve been putting it off for a very long while. On March 1st, 2017, STO is officially removing support for Windows XP and Direct3D 9. This will be rolled out slowly, so you needn’t worry that the change will happen tomorrow, but it might be time to earmark some holiday money for a new GPU if you’re running an Nvidia card produced during the Bush administration.

Players will be warned that their OS or hardware will not be supported by the game’s launcher starting today, with the system changing to support higher levels of Direct3D on January 15th, 2017. All subsequent versions of Windows (Vista, 7, 8, or 10) will still be supported, and if you’re already running a high-end card on Windows 10, it’s likely you won’t even notice the change. Those still running on older hardware will most definitely notice the change and should probably upgrade their machines… or start playing on console. Either one.Read more

Datamining hints at new content coming to Star Trek Online

December 14, 2016 12 Comments

So what’s next for Star Trek Online? Intrepid dataminers have been poking around in the game’s files since the last patch and found a couple of things that point in interesting directions.

For example, players have found that the right configuration of style pieces will make window lights pop up on an “invisible” hull on the new NX model, pointing in the direction of the refit NX design that would feature an underslung engineering hull akin to the original Constitution-class Enterprise.

Players have also found expanded sector maps that point to familiar spots within the universe, if not from the game; the sector maps correspond with worlds like Feringar and other sectors of space that have not yet been explored within the game.

A hint about the next destination for the game? Possibly, or possibly just early prototypes that were never intended for release. There’s no way to be certain, but there is plenty of room for player speculation.Read more

Star Trek Online’s Borg come home for the holidays

December 19, 2016 5 Comments

What are you hoping to see in your stocking come Christmas morning? If you’re like most geeks, chances are that you are hoping against hope to be brutally assimilated into an unfeeling, uncaring cyborg collective with a hive mind that cares nothing for IKEA. Star Trek Online feels you on this. The MMO announced that a Borg Red Alert is hitting the game from December 22nd through the 26th for all high-level captains. Borg incursions will be popping up left and right during this event, and instant travel to the latest hot zone will be available through the in-game interface.

Get prepared for the red alert by reading this lore piece to your family and gently informing them that resistance is futile.Read more

Star Trek Online details the creation of the Tzenkethi

January 9, 2017 19 Comments

The Tzenkethi are coming to Star Trek Online, which should make any franchise lore nerd at least moderately happy.

No television series has ever featured the Tzenkethi in the flesh, but they were discussed extensively in Deep Space Nine; we knew that they fought a war with the Federation and weren't necessarily friendly.

So the designers of the game just had to create a design for these aliens to make them a credible threat while also differentiating them from all of the other threats players have faced in the game over the years.

What we wind up with is a race of four-armed reptilian creatures that have a very different silhouette and profile than other alien races. The Tzenkethi employ modular and adaptive technology, but they tend to favor the same strategies time and again, and the designers stress that your first encounters against them should prove the most difficult. So they're going to be a different sort of foe on all levels, not just in the sense of looking different. Pretty good for a species we only heard mentioned in the background by Captain Sisko.Read more

Star Trek Online launches Season 12 on January 26

January 11, 2017 7 Comments

It's hard to believe that Star Trek Online is coming up on its seventh anniversary. But you should believe it; the game has been running for seven years, and it's kicking off its anniversary celebration with the launch of Season 12: Reckoning on January 26th. This patch sees the players facing off against the Tzenkethi with the help of the Lukari to prevent the race from utilizing wide-scale deployment of protomatter weaponry.

Players will have access to two new queues, a new featured episode with actor Tony Todd as General Rodek, and a new reputation to improve.

The anniversary event will also include the new Lukari science ship and plenty of other festive rewards for all captains, whether you've been with the game since it first left drydock or only started playing recently. Check out a small gallery for the update just below, and get ready to kick off another year of boldly going in just a couple more weeks.Read more

Star Trek Online opens new crafting line in Season 12

January 17, 2017 8 Comments

There may be a Reckoning coming to Star Trek Online later this month, but it doesn't mean that captains have to start quaking in their chairs. Crafters will be treated to a whole new school of development with Season 12: Kits and Modules Research.

As the title implies, this R&D school allows hobbyist captains the ability to whip up all sorts of ground combat devices, including kits, modules, and consumables. There even will be the ability to create all-new "passive" kits, although it sounds like the most obvious path to attaining these is through the store or lockboxes.

"Passive kit modules are a new type of kit nodule which are always active as long as the wearer is in Combat and give the user lesser versions of popular profession-specific abilities. There are currently two passive kit modules for each profession," Cryptic explained.Read more

Star Trek Online details the rewards for the Lukari Restoration Initiative

January 18, 2017 6 Comments

Why is the Federation fighting the Tzenkethi in Star Trek Online? To defend a sentient race, obviously. (You don't need as much justification for the KDF, as Klingons will fight someone if they have an hour to kill until dinner.)

But why will players fight the Tzenkethi? Why, to earn reputation with the Lukari Restoration Initiative in the hopes of getting powerful traits, weapons, and kit components. It's a good thing that altruism rewards you with powerful artifacts, otherwise it would be much harder to motivate.

Players can unlock new kit pieces specialized to each class option (special drones for Engineering, disabling webs for Science, and electrical grenades for Tactical) and new traits disabling weapons and shielding your allies. You can also get a new ground set, a new space set, and all of the according benefits of both. In summary, there's a whole mess of new toys to play around with once you've defended the Lukari, which should help give you a good idea of why you're defending them beyond story reasons..Read more
