Star Trek Online's Agents of Yesterday expansion debuts on console February 14

January 25, 2017 8 Comments

Star Trek Online's Agents of Yesterday, last summer's nostalgia-drenched expansion, will warp from PC to console on Valentine's Day, a press release from PWE declares today.

While the original PC release was deemed surprisingly "short" by our own hands-on, the console release will include the mid-expansion update, Artifacts, as well.

"Agents of Yesterday recruits Star Trek Online captains to become temporal agents and save the future by protecting the past. Players will create a captain from Star Trek: The Original Series and fly one of several 23rd Century ships, including the classic Enterprise, Constitution-class starship. As they play through each new episode, they will interact with iconic characters voiced by beloved Star Trek actors, including Chekov (Walter Koenig), Scotty (Chris Doohan, son of James Doohan), Temporal Agent Daniels (Matt Winston), Admiral Leeta (Chase Masterson) and cyborg crewman 0718 (Joseph Gatt). The console update will also feature a new specialization tree, new special task force missions and content from the Artifacts update, including the K-13 Fleet Holding, new weapons and bridge officers."

The one and only Star Trek MMORPG launched on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 last September, touting 1.1 million characters rolled by October.

Star Trek Online designs nine new starship variants

February 6, 2017 15 comments

Get out your abacus and your wallet, because Star Trek Online is getting ready to wow you with ship options and suck your funds dry to pay for them.

Cryptic announced that it is preparing nine versions of the Tier 6 Vesta Multimission Explorer. The variants break down into three types (science, tactical, and engineering) for each of the three factions (Klingon, Federation, and Romulan).

Besides looking sharp, each ship will come with a set for a universal Lt. Commander or a temporal bridge officer, a unique console, and a starship trait, such as heavy tachyon mines.

You'll have the choice to pay for them a la carte, in faction bundles, or a "super-bundle" containing all nine.Read more

Six new PvE queues are coming to Star Trek Online's console editions

February 8, 2017 6 comments

While Star Trek Online's console versions will probably always trail behind the PC edition in terms of the most up-to-date content, Cryptic is making headway on getting more content into the game for ambitious captains.

The studio announced today that six new PvE queues are coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the near future.

These allow players to queue up for fleet (large-scale) actions with other players against major enemies, such as the Crystalline Entity and the Doomsday Machine. There's always the motivation of juicy rewards for participating in these, including dilithium, fleet marks, and rare items.Read more

Star Trek Online shows off the factional flagships for console captains

February 21, 2017 3 comments

Good news for anyone playing Star Trek Online on consoles: The Tier 6 flagships are on their way. But what do the stats look like on these ships?

Do you even want to be flying them? You can check out the flagship stats now and make that decision for yourself, if you're so inclined. And let's be real here, they should be pretty appealing.

As is common for the more expensive high-end ships, there are three variants for each of the flagships, with each variant tilting slightly more toward tactical, engineering, or science uses. Even with those variants, these are large, slow ships, so don't expect the tactical variant to turn on a dime.

Still, the variations should give you plenty of options for each different style of ship, so check out the full rundown if you can't wait to ride around in the iconic flagships from the comfort of the couch.Read more

Star Trek Online goes once more unto the Breach queue

March 6, 2017 2 comments

A special version of Star Trek Online's Breach queue is now hailing captains to adventure.

Cryptic brought back its five-player instanced Breach for a "faster-paced, action-packed" romp that's been streamlined and balanced to be better than before. And that's not the really good part! As with many STO releases, there are extra rewards for players who run this queue upon its return.

From now through the 23rd (and from March 16th through April 7th for console jockeys)
, Star Trek Online will award Breach queue victors with special currency that can be exchanged for a ton of currency, marks, and even a Voth melee weapon. After this time, the queue will revert to its normal reward payout.Read More

Star Trek Online urges players once more into the Breach on console

March 14, 2017 4 comments

The Breach queue in Star Trek Online has been trimmed up nicely for console players, shortened to the most interesting portions of the queue and generally improved all around.

That alone might be reason for players to jump in and start playing it, but the designers are offering some added incentive to play from March 16th to April 7th. Queue up for either the normal or advanced version of the queue with a character at level 50 or higher, and you'll be able to earn a Voth Operative Transmission from a successful clear.

One transmission may be earned every 20 hours of real-world time, and a set of 14 such transmissions can be used for a special event project that rewards 50,000 Dilithium Ore, 500 Fleet Marks, 250 more marks of the player's choice, and a special Admiralty ship. The Advanced version of the queue will also award players with Voth Cybernetic Implants, as always. It's just a little extra push to get console players into the Breach, so we recommend getting ready to start heading in promptly once March 16th rolls around.Read more

Star Trek Online offers a broad overview of upcoming space combat balance changes

March 15, 2017 14 comments

The space combat of Star Trek Online is pretty much the crown jewel of the game. It's intriguing, diverse, engaging, and pretty much everyone who plays the game is all but contractually obligated to praise it. But it's certainly not perfect, which is why the game is rebalancing the space combat.

A new post on the official site details the core philosophy behind the changes to keep the gameplay fun and vital while adding more choices, and the barest skeleton of the changes are also outlined.

Beam Overload is becoming slightly less powerful, while targetable kinetic weapons like torpedoes will be harder (but not impossible) to shoot down and no longer will be affected by abilities like Tyken's Rift.

Several profession abilities are also being buffed up significantly to have a greater impact on combat, like a big boost to Miracle Worker's effects and a new Science ability to improve healing and exotic damage. The full list of changes will be detailed point-by-point in an upcoming test patch, so players can look forward to the full set of shifts with the upcoming change for feedback.Read more

Star Trek Online preps Reckoning update for consolers in April

March 22, 2017 One comment

PWE announced this afternoon that Star Trek Online will drop the Reckoning update on console players next month on April 18th -- that's a pretty quick clip for console players, who just got Agents of Yesterday mid-February.

Heck, PC players only just got Reckoning in January. What's in it? A brand-new-to-you featured episode, the new crafting school, two Tzenkethi-themed space queues, and the new space battlezone.
"Season 12 – Reckoning centers around the new featured episode, Of Signs and Portents. Captains will join the Lukari on a mission to investigate weaponized use of protomatter in a new region of the Alpha Quadrant. Further evidence leads them to the Tzenkethi, a highly intelligent, militant species who plan on using the deadly substance to build a bomb capable of wiping out entire planets. Teaming up with legendary Klingon General Rodek (voiced by actor Tony Todd), the Alliance must find a way to stop the Tzenkethi from enacting a potentially cataclysmic attack. Season 12 also unlocks expansive new content for players to discover, including the Lukari Restoration Reputation, the new Kits and Modules Research School, a full space battlezone and two new space queues, Gravity Kills and The Tzenkethi Front."
Don't forget there's a double experience bonus event running this weekend!

Star Trek Online highlights the rewards for its upcoming War Games gameplay

April 13, 2017 2 comments

The next major season patch for Star Trek Online introduces players to a major new system: War Games. The whole point is good-natured competition in PvP or competitive PvE:
“This new type of queue allows two five-person teams to battle head-to-head in competitive PvE scenarios. To keep players on an even playing field, a new Player Potential system has been introduced that will match players of similar skill in the same matches. The War Game system will also have a new reputation tied to it, including for the first time ever, class specific-ship and captain gear. Captains can mix and match new gear they earn from any class and also have the option to specialize. To support the new War Games system, a full rebalance pass has been made to ground and space combat to ensure that no matter what choice captains make when outfitting their skills or ship, it isn’t a wrong one.”
But what sort of rewards are available? Why, the ones the latest official post details, naturally. Expect a new space set, new ground sets, new consumables, and so forth. Each of the sets is also built to be desirable in competitive scenarious, as well; the ground set, for example, offers big bursts of temporary hit points when you take severe damage, allowing you to survive sudden ambushes more easily. Check out the full rundown of rewards if you think shooting at your friends’ ships sounds like fun and games.Read more

April 18, 2017 Leave a comment

Sci-fi MMO fans on console, today’s a good day for you to get yourself all patched up: Both Star Trek Online and Warframe rolled out big updates today that were formerly on PC only. Star Trek Online pushed out Season 12 “Reckoning” earlier this afternoon on both Xbox One and PS4. “Captains can now face off against [the] powerful, militant [Tzenkethi] on both Xbox One and PS4, as they participate in a new featured episode, two space queues and a full space battlezone,” says PWE. Executive Producer Stephen Ricossa made note of the up-tempo cadence for consoles:
“With the release of Season 12, you’ll notice that content is coming out sooner and sooner on Xbox One and Playstation 4. Soon, you won’t have to wait long at all to enjoy all of the great new content that comes out every month for Star Trek Online.”
And Warframe delivered Octavia’s Anthem to both major consoles this morning, bringing the sci-fi bard-themed warframe to gamers with a musical quest and special instrument.

Star Trek Online talks about Season 13 combat balance, triggers console event

May 9, 2017 2 comments

If you didn’t catch it, Star Trek Online’s recent Season 13 update contained more than just another fancy featured episode. The systems team used this opportunity to push out a combat pass that tackled both space and ground encounters.

So what’s the deal with the rebalance? Lead Systems Designer Jeremy Randall took to a livestream to answer the many, many questions players had about the sweeping combat changes and how they’re panning out in the game.

“By and large, we think that this was a success,” he said at the beginning of the stream. “However, I think we should have attempted to communicate more about what we were doing and why were doing it earlier on.”

Console players might want to log in next week for a special Crystalline Catacysm event. By defeating the Crystalline Entity (which can be done every 20 hours), players get a pile of ore, reputation marks, and a universal kit. There’s also a special one-shard project that can be activated when the rep grind is complete that awards even more goodies.
The full Q&A session is after the break (the actual talking begins at the 10-minute mark).

Star Trek Online brings Season 13 to consoles next month, teases T6 light cruisers

May 16, 2017 i 4 comments

Cryptic’s console crowd must know by know that it takes a month, give or take, for a PC update to make its way over to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

So while Star Trek Online’s Season 13: Escalation arrived for home computers back in late August, it’s going to be early June before consoles get to welcome this patch.

Season 13 is officially coming to PS4 and Xbone on June 6th, which means that there are three more weeks before console gamers get to check out the new featured episode, the War Games mode, and a coda episode featuring Star Trek’s Denise Crosby.

Star Trek Online is currently running a screenshot contest to gather more pictures for the game’s loading screens, which will be judged by a panel of Cryptic artists. The team also teased its incoming T6 light cruiser line that includes the well-known Miranda-class starship.Read more
