Star Trek Sequel

Hence why even treading that territory this soon with all that good will from the reboot is lazy.

I fail to understand why introducing the character of Khan is lazy and why its considered too soon. Khan was introduced in the first year of the Enterprise's five year mission and I'm sure that ST2 will take place at least a year after the events of the ST.

Because the entire point of rebooting the franchise in the manner they did with the time-travel alteration creating a new continuity was so they could do anything they wanted at the end of the first film. The sky was the limit regarding where they could go now with the new character dynamics, having them together as a team 10 years early, etc.

For them to turn around and say, "Eh...let's just bring in Khan" defeats the whole purpose of the reboot. They're bringing in the comparison to the Space Seed episode and The Wrath of Khan when they don't have to. So many other characters, aliens, worlds, etc. they could encounter now. But nah...just reboot Khan.

That's lazy.

Another report confirmed Khan as Villain.A point was made they denied Zod as villain for
Man of steel too.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of Khan, just because I think he's overrated as a villain. But I would be open to seeing him in a new context. Maybe it's not the Enterprise that finds him, but the Klingons or another race. Give Khan an entire fleet to command, and we can see what he can do, more of his potential we saw in Space Seed instead of the half-starved barbarian in WOK.

This would be more alternate version of Space Seed than Wrath of Khan.Peter Weller Is probally playing the secondary villain that was reported on after Alice Eve was cast.ALthough I have no Idea who It could be.As for Alice Eve maybe see IS a member of Khan's people we didn't see before. And maybe she Is sent to seduce Kirk.Hell the enteprise could still find the sleeper ship only now they don't figure out who Khan Is,they end up dropping Khan and people out and then Khan causes trouble with another villain.

Oh well there are alot of other actors in Hollywood. Javier Bardem would be a great addition but I think he is currently filming in the next Bond movie. Of course it would be easier if we knew what role he was being sought after.

Assuming it is Khan then Antonio Banderas would still be a good catch. Nestor Carbonell seems like a natural. However I suspect JJ wants a big name.

Considering the reboot was a cast full of lesser-to-unknowns in the leads, I'd say this is the studio talking in regards to Khan casting.

Agreed. I thought it was lazy for that to be the first villain fans thought about in regards to a sequel. For the actual people in charge of making this to do the same thing? Doubly lazy. :o

Antonio Bandres is..Khan... (He looks young despite being in his early 50's. Plus he hasn't done a big mainstream live action flick in a while...

I would agree with you if they took your approach but if you say that the sky is the limit then why can't Khan be reintroduced in a non lazy creative way that doesn't involved a rehash of the "Space seed" episode and at the same time introduces new characters, aliens, new worlds, etc. that could be encountered. By your logic, then introducing Klingons from the original series would be lazy too. But re-introducing characters who are part of ST lore (like the Romulans in ST) is not lazy.

It only seems lazy because of one dimensional thinking and not being open to the possibilities.

When I say young, when he dyes his hair and doesn't sport that Casear haircut that he strangely loves...

You can do Klingons or Romulans in a interesting different way because that's a species of characters we're talking about. Khan is one character. Known for one sequel iconic in both its popularity/success as well as parody. Big difference.

And again...they're welcoming the comparison. Worst of all they already did the Khan story. In the reboot. With Nero.

Don't see how anyone doesn't see this as lazy given how much they made an effort to reboot in a fashion to please the hard-core fans and get in the general public. It doesn't "need" Khan at this juncture because the reboot was so overwhelmingly received. General public wasn't walking out during that summer clamoring for him as the villain, just fanboys with zero imagination.

I'm not a writer but I think it would be easier to do one character in an interesting way than a whole group (plus don't forget that Khan also has approximately 80 genetically-engineered supermen. I think that opens up a number of possibilities.) Also regardless of how iconic Khan is or was, that was over 30 years ago.

Are you telling me that Khan is more iconic than Kirk and Spock? I cannot think of any characters in pop culture with more popularity/success and parody than them. By your logic, JJ's Star Trek shouldn't have been a success (many people for sure was certain it would fail) and I've heard some of this same logic applied to Nolan's version of the Joker as well. Nolan offered his interpretation of the character and I would be interested in JJ's interpretation of Khan (but only if he is inspired by the character. If he has no real interest then I pray that it would not be a studio mandated decision.)

Its time to step up the the challenge rather than hiding from it and making the excuse that's its lazy to do so. Its actually lazy not to. Whether they introduce him now or in the next sequel, Khan is a great character from Star Trek mythology and not to use him again is a crime. ,

Yes, they did the Khan story from ST2 but it have to be that story in any new movies.

What the movie "needs" is an effective and entertaining story and a strong antagonist. If JJ and Co. believes that Khan and his crew and fit the bill, and there is a good story to tell, and it can be done with imagination rather than just a retread of the two previous Khan stories then that would be anything but lazy.

Of course there is a lot of "ifs" in there but my point is that re-introducing Khan does not have to equate to being lazy. If they do use him then hopefully JJ and Co. and resist the urge of going the easy route and use their imagination to tell a truly inspired story with a character, who in my opinion, hasn't been fully utilized.

In fact, I think regardless, of who the main villain will be, it wasn't unanimous that Nero from the reboot was a worthy antagonist. The challenge for JJ now is to produce a movie that is better than the last one which means a stronger opponent for Kirk and Crew. If JJ thinks that its Khan then I support him. If they can come up with someone better then I'm for that as well. The story is more important than the characters who will be in it but it takes the right characters for the story to be fully realized so we'll see.

That was the point of my previous post. People are saying that if they use Khan they will just be retreading THE WRATH OF KHAN.....no, they won't. They may retread in some way SPACE SEED....but not wrath.

It's not Lazy writing..in fact most trek fans demand to see Khan because it is the best film of them all and there is the plain fact he is out there in this reality.

Sorry, I'll take Khan over some Khan clone character for the 100th time.

But it really doesn't have to be a retread of the Space Seed for the most part. Like you mentioned, the Enterprise doesn't have to be the one who picks up the Botany Bay. It could be the Klingons instead. And unlike the Space Seed episode, Khan could be successful at getting a full battle cruiser or maybe have Khan and his supermen commit a successful coup of the Klingon government and with the full resources of the Klingon empire, Khan attempts to conquer the Federation.

Khan could become the Star Trek's version of the Indiana Jones's series ultimate bad guy: Hitler

In other words, if Khan took over the Klingon homeworld, don't resolve it in one movie. Have it be the backdrop to the new movies series, just like World War II was the backdrop to the Indy movies.

Just one idea.

TOLJA! :oldrazz:

Time for some of the people in here who hated the Khan idea for him to be the main baddie in the Trek sequel to stay off the bandwagon if he is indeed the villain.

Not closing the deal and snagging Del Toro would be a bad fail though.

My top choice for Khan, Javier Bardem is busy with Bond, unless his scenes can be shot in a month and half, but then Paramount and Abrams would need to pay him more money than they would have for Del Toro? haha

They need give Del Toro a fair and reasonable deal IMO. He would be a good catch as Khan.

Other Latin actors I can see considered as Khan besides Bardem and Del Toro:

Edgar Ramirez
Gael Garcia Bernal
Rodrigo Santoro
Antonio Banderas

Don't know how it would be lazy?

You don't know how they plan on writing his characterization into this alternate Trek universe as of yet.

Anyone who thinks this Khan would be a carbon copy of what Montalban did in Wrath of Khan over 30 freakin years ago has a lack of vision and THAT is lazy IMO.

he wanted to play him as Khan 'Fenster' Singh. JJ didnt liked that..

I think Del Toro needs to wake up and smell the coffee, he isnt a big name anymore you could argue he never was. If indeed it was monetary reasons, he needs to realize this movie could help him out big time.

I would not mind seeing an alternate Trek universe version Khan Noonien Singh.

Well now I'm sure the villain is Khan. "Not true" was simply to the report that Del Toro was playing him when apparently talks had already fallen through on. While I am a little disappointed as I wanted to see a different villain, I must admit I'll be very interested to see who they get to play him now.
