Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe

Not every show is out to tell a finite story, though. Some, like SG-1 and Atlantis, just have a broad, overarching formula and come up with smaller stories within that frame. There's no reason Atlantis couldn't go on for another few years. Would it be the best show on television? Obviously not. But it would still be entertaining to a lot of people.

Oh well, I guess this means we'll all be waiting on Universe for the foreseeable future.

I was just getting at the idea that 100 episodes is a fair deal for any TV show. If they're good enough, then by all means, allow them to go on.

But I personally, would like the SG universe to go away for a little while. Much like Trek, things feel like they're getting a little stale. I don't know about you guys, but I could really go for 'the next sci fiction space opera'. Kind of the way SG replaced trek as the prime tv based scifi, I'm waiting for that next science fiction space opera that will replace SG. BSG was an option, but it's far deeper, and more involved that either Trek or SG, almost putting it in an entirely different league, and not the kind of thing that I'd flick to when I'm bored, surfing channels for something to watch(that's what simpleton shows like SG and Trek are perfect for)

What worries me is that I dont think Stargate is big enough yet that it would actually return if given time away

That's a pretty ******ed chunk of people, then.

But it's a rather large chunk and that's all that counts....the movies are relatively cheap to make, don't require a long term investment, and get people who wouldn't normally watch scifi channel to tune in...

me and a couple friends got some booze and some "smoking paraphenalia" and watched Aztec Rex starring Ian Zeiring as Cortez.....we had a great time

you see!!!! What happens when you smoke the happy?? It makes you do crazy things! Pass on grass! Protect others from bad tv! :)

Ian Zeiring playing a Spaniard explorer in a bad wig was quite fantastic though...

IMO...some take science fiction too seriously...it's roots are in camp (Plan 9 from Outer Space, Santa saves the Martians) just as much as they are in "serious" films....2001, Alien, etc.

I think I'd probably have tried to kill someone if 2001 were never made because funding for it went to Santa Saves the Martians instead.

my point is that both sides are needed....honestly SG-1 had 10 seasons and Atlantis has 5....that's 15 seasons worth of stuff....that's pretty decent....I saw Atlantis with maybe another season, 2 at the most...as long as the ending isn't stupid or hastily thrown together (which could happen) I'll be OK....and maybe this means that Universe might show up in a year or two

I'm not really that upset about Atlantis getting canceled. It was no Farscape or BSG or anything. But the idea of Atlantis being canceled while stuff like Mansquito still gets made is pretty galling. There may be a lot of old campy sci fi movies out there, but I don't think quality sci fi like Atlantis owes a damn thing to any of it. However bad Atlantis got, it was still always better than trash movies like that.

You know what...every time someone wants to bash Sci-Fi...they pull "Mansquito" out....you're like the 4th or 5th person I've spoken to that has referred to it in that way...

I'm more annoyed than upset over this canning.

I'm hearng rumors that it wasn't Sci-Fi that canned SG:A but it was in fact MGM that ended it. (This bit form somene who is a big part in the running of the Sci-Fi website, so he would know whats going on there... or know someone who knows whats going on there)

And the reason i was given? TPTB behind SG:A and SG-1 want to make a new series called Stargate;Universe.... and MGM has siad they could have EITHER SG:A or SG:U....

So SG:A has been canned to make way for SG:U

And that more than anything else has annoyed me.:cmad:

That would be kind of dumb. SG-1 and Atlantis got better ratings together than just Atlantis...

Yes but it's probably a LOT cheaper to have just one SG series running instead of two...at least they are committing (albeit verbally) to do STDVD movies and such...

Well, if you count SG1 and SGA together, 300+ episodes is a pretty respectable run for a show.

so it's true SGA being canceled? :( I hate sci fi

Guess I'm down to 3 reasons to watch Sci-Fi. And once BSG finishes up next year, it'll be down to two.

I honestly could care less about Atlanitis being cancelled. I'm more interested in seeing Stargate Universe.

What is so cool about Universe? I haven't heard anything about it.

I'd rather Atlantis keep going if we had to choose to only have one stargate show.

Anyways, I just watched the new movie, and it was really good.

The plan actually sounds good, as it creates a more dynamic series that doesn't have to have a main adversary and doesn't even require a constant crew as people get left behind and new characters taken along. It also creates more dramatic elements when it comes to leaving people behind, except...

...ST: Voyager already covered all of these elements. :o

I swear, if I hear about "phage" in SG:U...:cmad: (They used the term in SG:A.)

Howe said the new series will reinvigorate the franchise by targeting a younger audience

“This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation,” Howe said. “We really don’t want to be more of the same. It’s going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe.”

“In ‘Universe,’ we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers

To me, this is crap. Making this show for a younger audience? Having a "team" mostly of young people, are they turning this into SG:90210 ?
