I liked Gog a LOT when I was a kid...
Harry first appearance as the GG was the only one that really mattered to me... though the JM Dematteis era really made me like him in that role again...
Norman was a great villain in the 60's/70's, but became a quick one tick pony...
Within 5 years, the main 3 GG stories (ASM #39/40, Spectacular #1 & ASM #96/97/98 all ended with Norman getting "amnesia")... this was obviously becoming a problem with Marvel, and since the death of Captain Stacy, Gwen had also become a two-dimensional "I hate Spider-Man because he killed my father" character, Marvel decided to kill two birds with one story... thus the infamous ASM #121/122... which should have been the "end" of Norman Osborn.
As far as Goblins go, we had a great few years with Harry, the Bart Hamilton story was lots of fun, and Stern made things interesting with a new generation in the form of the original HobGoblin.
However, when Marvel decided to bring back Norman as a "quick fix" to end teh Clone Saga, he was merely a "plot device"... much like he was back in 1973 when they needed a used up villain to kill Gwen.
I have a hard time believing that Norman has beenresponsible for all of Peter's hardships since his "death", and yes, while that potentially makes him Spidey's #1 villain on paper, I find it hard to swallow as a reader because it was never really the intent.
And don't get me started on how Marvel now treats Norman like their version of Lex Luther.... Norman should have stayed in the ground where he belongs back in 1973.
