State Your Opinion On A TV Show

I enjoy Dr. Who. I've never seen the old series, but I watched the Eccleston and Tennant seasons sporadically and have watched every episode of the Matt Smith era. I really like it, but I've never LOVED it. Something about it keeps me at a distance, and I honestly don't know what that is.

For that reason, I'll agree that it is one of the greatest sci-fi series of all-time, but I don't think it's the greatest.

You would both be correct, though I'm not a huge Trekkie. I just can recognize the greatness while I enjoy it casually. Doctor Who actually appeals to me more.

Cool. That's pretty much the way I feel about it too. (Also, if there's a more enjoyable show to drunkenly stumble upon after a night out, I have yet to find it.)

That's interesting. You think maybe it's the sheer volume of story that came before the show was brought back. If so, I wouldn't let that bother you.

(Also: EXCELLENT avvie! AD has to make an appearance here soon...)

BSG flat out sucked from what little I saw of the original. I have no expectations for the new version.

The original does suck. The remake is incredible.

That probably has something to do with it. As I said, though, I really do enjoy it. And I don't know if you were referring to Star Trek or Dr. Who when you said this, but DW is one of the best shows to watch while drunk. :woot:

Thank you! And yes, I feel AD is due in this thread any time now.

Too bad I'll never know then. :o
That is a shame. The original BSG is awful cheesy crap, but the remake everything it wasn't - smart, epic, gritty and harrowing.

Not really a shame. You see, I like cheesy, campy stuff, but what I don't like (and find crappy) is the premise behind BSG, which didn't change when the series was remade, with the added "bonus" of apparently being "gritty".

You can like it all you want. That's cool. If it's your sort of thing, go for it.

I reserve the right to not like what I don't like, regardless of how good it may be. :o

Human space colonists at war with alien robots. Not interesting.

They aren't "at war" - they're running for their lives as a newly endangered species. In the pilot, someone bluntly spells it out: "The war is over. We lost." It's about humanity trying to build a new civilization and preserve their species when they are forever desperate and on the run. They are constantly faced with the hardest choices imaginable. It's about human nature on a grand scale.

You're entitled to not find that interesting, of course. More power to ya. But its premise is far more complex than you just suggested.

You should really try watching it. At the very least so you'll actually know what you're talking about. :/

Sounds like war to me. The end of a war, one that the people are losing, but war nonetheless.

And of course it's more complex, hence the simplification.

Heard that before. Don't want to. I know enough that it doesn't interest me.

No, war is when both sides are in the fight. Again, in the pilot, the war is over. Not "losing," "lost." When one culture is relentlessly pursuing the other to eliminate them from existence, there's different name for it: genocide.

So a "simplification" of it would look more like: The human race trying to escape extinction from its own genocidal creations.

And by escaping that extinction, I'd hope that they're fighting. Whatever, I'm not interested in the show. Big deal.

Just because they fight when they run, doesn't make it war. We fight with people all the time without going to war. War involves nations and political conflict. It has rules. It has two sides trying to win. Two sides attacking. In BSG, there is no hope of winning for humanity. They don't attack, they just run. This is straight-up genocide they are merely attempting to survive.

I genuinely don't care if you're interested in the show, I was just clarifying your false description of it. It's not war, and it's not "alien robots."

Still sounds a lot like war to me. War doesn't mean stuff's fair, doesn't mean that both sides need to be taking the offensive. It need not involve politics. It absolutely does NOT have rules. "Trying to survive" sounds a lot like trying to win.

And how are they not alien robots? I don't recall the Cylons being manmade.

Did they change that with the remake?
I don't remember the case in the original, as I've only seen a couple of episodes of that, but they were definitely man-made in the new one. The very first words of the pilot are "The Cylons were created by man."

They were "cybernetic organisms" created to make life easier on the colonies. They rebelled, went to war, and an armistice was declared. The Cylons were allowed to leave the colonies of humanity to find their own home in another solar system. Then they returned 40 years later to wipe humanity out in one day. And they pretty much succeeded. That's where the show starts - with destruction of the civilizations of mankind and the relative few humans who just happened to be in space traveling when their homeworlds were destroyed.
