okay with all the talk about ants and no mention of superorganisms i'm going to have to write about that. heck i haven't even seen a mention that they communicate by smell yet. the reason a collection of animals following simple instinctual programming can as a whole have complicated behaviour is pretty much the same reason a brain of millions of cells each performing simple mechanisms can lead to what we consider a consciousness or complicated behaviour. superorganisms are just cloud computing.

I wouldn't be surprised if our first meeting (if it ever happens) with aliens will be kind of anticlimactic after all the fantasies we have created about it in books and films. A little like when you build up and build up hype for a movie and once you've seen it you're left with a "that's all that is?"-feeling

I don't know about aliens showing up on Earth and being hostile, but I AM certain we would be hostile to them. We humans have a history of trying to destroy that which we do not understand.
