Being an enormously gigantic Stephen King connoisseur, I though it’d be nice – mainly for me ;) – to have a thread dedicated to films adapted from his large list of works. So feel free to pop in here and discuss some of them. Some of them are really great, and there’s also a large chunk that reek of roasted placenta. I’m going to list some of his films… I say some because I’ll probably forget a few. Feel free to remind me of their place in the universe… there’ll also be the odd entry that may surprise you at being a King adaptation, but don’t question me; I speak the truth :cmad:

In no particular order:

Carrie
The Shining
Misery
The Dead Zone
Christine
Fire Starter
The Dark Half
Pet Semetary
Needful Things
Sleepwalkers
Dolores Claiborne
Stand By Me
Silver Bullet
Hearts In Atlantis
Maximum Overdrive :o
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
1408
The Mist
The Running Man
Apt Pupil
Thinner
Secret Window
Cat’s Eye (three short films linked together by a… cat )
The Mangler
Dreamcatcher
Riding the Bullet

Ok, there are loads more, but that’ll do for the time being. There’s also other things like made-for-TV mini series like The Stand, IT, ’Salem’s Lot, Rose Red… and he’s also written episodes for X-Files and Tales from the Darkside and I’m sure many others.

Prolific, to say the least. But there is a lot of sh** in there.

My favourites being Misery, Shawshank Redemtion, 1408, Secret Window, and The Mist. With the exception of Misery and The Shining, I feel his work has been taken more seriously and greater care has been taken when adapting his works as the years have wound on.

Annnnnd discuss :yay:

King is the King. Not sure there's more to add to that. I liked his short in Creepshow and him as a hillbilly mutant. haha

And how could you leave out Pet Semetary???

I've seen at least half of these--

You missed IT Eggy!!

IT scared the living **** out of me when I was younger. I used to have nightmares about clowns for years after.

Edit: No you didn't miss IT. Sowwi! :D

Eggy is human after all.

the original Salem's Lot scared the crap out of me when i first saw it. Danny Glick at the window still unnerves me, and when Barlow pops up in front of the screen in the jail cell, it scares me all the time.

IT also scared the crap out of me. I've yet to see The Mist though. I really want to.

^ I reaaaally liked The Misty Shield :woot:

I remember a friend of mine swearing blind that The Running Man was NOT a King book. Of course, he was quite right; it was written by Richard Bachman... King's Pseudonym.

Pet Semetary added :o

That was very disappointing when compared to the book. The book was creepy as hell. Even King thought he went too far with that one.

Misery was fab. Kathy Bates deserved that Oscar. Stand By Me, Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, and IT were all great adaptions, too.

But Eggy, where the heck is The Stand and Salems' Lot (1979)? Two of my all time favs!

They're two of my favourites also, J. I mentioned them at the bottom because when they first came out they weren't films, they were both mini series.

Edit: Sorry, J, I've bolded them now so they are more noticeable ;)

Ahhhh right, sorry. I saw adaptions in the title and assumed that was what you were listing :o

Out of interest, which of his books is your fav?

I love The Stand, but I think Bag of Bones beats it slightly.

I do love The Stand series - Lt. Dan as Stu Redman is great lol :D

Loooove The Stand, too. Probably my second favourite after Salems' Lot. I know Salems' Lot is not his most impressive book, but I don't know I just love it the best. The idea of a simple town being invaded my vampires was just so unique, and it had some darn scary moments.

The scene where Matt Burke hears noises in his upstairs guest room....:wow:

M-O-O-N, that spells moon.

Laws yes, it does :cwink:

Films that I have seen based on his books
The Shining - really liked the film but haven't read the book
1408 - liked the film but haven't read the short story yet
Misery - liked the film but haven't read the book
The Shawshank Redemption - liked the film but haven't read the short story
The Mist - read the short story and really liked the film

Is there ever going to be a film adaptation of Cell because I thought it was an excellent book?

Hahaha.

Tom was nothing how I pictured him in the made-for-TV thing, but you just can't help but like the guy, laws no.

'Salem's Lot is in my top 3 - the growth King displayed from Carrie to that was massive.

I love the 'Salem's Lot mini series with David Soul... not the best, but great nontheless. It was a typical end-of-the 70s production. Made the year I was born, no less :D

My fav books by King were:

The Shining
The Stand
Misery
Cujo
Pet Semetary

Now not in any order, but Misery was my favorite adaptation. Though Kubrick's The Shining was way different, in its own right it was amazing, but not loyal to the book. But I remember sitting upstairs at my house *I live in the country* and reading the book Cujo, then reading a part of the dog running up to some one, for some reason I imagined it running up the stairs and grabbing me. I threw the book up and ran lol.

The Stand made me hold my breath in fear of the virus lol.

Misery, I will never become famous now ;)

Yea it would be nice to see a like three part movie/HBO mini series done well of TheStand not a cheap one like they did. I think it would be amazing, if HBO did it.

Misery's awesome. Cockadoodee bastard chicken feed lol

Kathy Bates' first role on film, before that she was a stage performer. Sweet Lord she was amazing in that film.

"God I love you."

That line by her made me have nightmares for weeks. I was rooting for Caan to take her down at the end. Such a suspenseful movie.
