Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 2

Watched this on the 19th. It really is a poor adaptation of the novels. Hardly recognisable with elements of Books 1, 3 and even Doctor Sleep mashed together. Character motivations are changed, Mid-World is barely established, the implementation of the famous opening line is extremely awkward...

HAVING SAID THAT, as somebody with an appetite for schlocky, hammy nonsense, it was strangely entertaining, largely because of Matthew McConaughey's performance. He was basically playing Randall Flagg, one of The Man in Black's many guises, but he was fun to watch. I particularly enjoyed him strutting around commanding people to 'burn' and 'stop breathing' and things of that ilk. And the instances in which he referred to his abilities as 'my magics' were hilarious.

Not a good film, but I didn't hate it as I expected to.

I think the key thing is that if you go in expecting a young adult fantasy along the lines of Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thieves, or a Mortal Instruments movie, its barely passable.

As a Dark Tower movie, it's ****ing godawful pigswill that should have been aborted pre-birth.

I'm delighted to see how poorly it's faired at the box office.

The poor box office performance probably means that there won't be another attempt at adapting The Dark Tower for years to come. if ever.
How is that a good thing?

I don't think that's necessarily true. I just think to do it right, it needs another medium like Netflix or Television. It's going to be a while thought, they need to let the stink from this pile wear off first.

The Dark Tower is perfect for big budget TV series. If it's made by someone who knows what he does, HBO or Netflix. It makes more sense than doing movie adaptation, but it can be done. LoTR does exist. But again you need to have someone who know what he is doing and studio behind his back. And it's certainly easier to have more creative freedom on television than if you do big screen adaptation.

Very true. The unfortunate thing with this, is there was so much talent that was just wasted. I actually liked the casting choices, but when the script is s***, it's just a total waste. Even putting aside the fact that this was a huge departure from the books, the script was still terrible on it's own.

So, this turd has been out a month now, and it's not even cracked 90 million globally.

Lovely stuff. Even with a small advertising budget, it's a loss for Sony.

Hopefully the tv series will be quietly killed, and we can reconvene in a few years for a reboot.

Glad this is doing badly. Why can't they take the source material seriously when taking on an important work like this?

Too many idiots in high places
Why they don't get the boot when their plans turn out so badly though?! If it was properly results orientated then we'd be left with people who know how to make a success of proposed projects by bringing in the right teams and giving them the right resources. Imagine idiots like this had been in charge of dealing with the first Harry Potter or MCU film. There would be no juggernaut franchise with tonnes of films in either case, just a fart in the wind like the impact the Dark Tower has had.

Agreed, i would love to know how they keep their jobs.

I already forgot the details in the movie and I saw it weeks ago.

I finally saw this tonight, my Dad wanted to see it, he hasn't read the books, and I didn't say no as he agrees to see plenty of movies with me.

It wasn't the disaster I was expecting. If I hadn't read the books I would probably enjoy it as a rainy day turn your brain off action movie. It had some good moments in that regard like the finale in the Dixie Pig and the attack on the village. Elba was great as Roland, and MM's jaw must have been aching for months after all the scene chewing he did. I liked the kid who played Jake also, he did well in the role. You can tell the director had a liking of the books as well with references to Sombre, the Rose, Eld, even a slight hint of Walters involvement with Roland's mother.

But as an adaptation of the books? A complete and utter failure. Roland was to nice, and revenge being his main motivation over The Tower was a crock of ****. Jakes role was vastly changed. No Eddie, no Susannah, and why the hell are the tower, the Dixie Pig, Sayre and half the other things even doing in the series this early? It's like they threw all of the books in a blender and made a movie out of what was left. Sony just need to give up after ruining this, what could have been a potentially great franchise. The less said about Tom Rothman the better. I don't mind changes being made to book adaptations, but they had the ingredients for a decent set of movies here and squandered it totally. 4/10.

Now that this is the latest Sony failure, do I have reasonable concerns about the adaptation of The Wheel of Time?

We all have reason to be concerned about any Sony production at the moment.

Even worse, no Oy. :csad:

AKE! AKE!

I thought there was at least a slight reference to him though. When Roland commented on the talking animals in the commercial.

That's a cool looking coaster.

or is it a paperweight?

Their film division must be a crazy place. How can you fit so many idiots into such a small place?!

My rationalisation would be that they got them all and that's why, but we clearly know idiots are everywhere in the movie, and all other, industries.

I don't know if I ever commented on the movie, but it reminded me so much of when Tom Rothman would be handling things over at Fox. Short, formulaic blockbusters for a dumb audience, without the slightest hint of a director's vision.

Never read the books. The movie felt like it was made by Studio execs trying to make some new young adult fantasy franchise.

Overall the film was a bit dull. Elba and McConaughey did good with what little they had.
