Have they said how the story will be split?

I had read a while back that they were considering putting the events of 1957-1958 in one film, and having film two deal solely with the 1984-1985 stuff. Is this still the plan?

Yes.

And I personally think that's a bad move. Possibly a disastrous move.

It's a disastrous move not to put this on HBO as a miniseries, I'll tell you hwat. :o

Tom Waits as Pennywise

Or Michael Keaton.

These are actually incredible choices. :wow:

I'll expand on this list with my own... How about a Top 20?

Tom Waits
Michael Keaton
Gary Oldman
Paul Giamatti
Willem Dafoe
Jim Carrey
Bill Hader
Steve Buscemi
Jackie Earle Hayley
Paul Reubens
John C. Reilly
Sam Rockwell
Andy Serkis
Adrien Brody
Kevin Spacey
Robert Downey Jr.
James Spader
Sacha Baron Cohen
Javier Bardem
Tim Curry (Again)

How so? I haven't read the book all the way through, but I can see the appeal to doing it that way. Film one can deal with the children and the horror they go through and then film two deals with them as adults trying to kill the monster once and for all.

I hope they keep the Turtle and all that weird cosmic stuff.

Actually, that's how they did it in the 1990 TV miniseries, and it turned out quite well for the most part. A common criticism has always been that the first half with the kids was always more interesting than the second half with the adults. But trying to blend the two halves of the story into one is very difficult to do, bordering on impossible. So I say go for it.

STEPHEN KING’S IT DIRECTOR CARY FUKUNAGA SEEKS THE "PERFECT" PENNYWISE FOR REMAKE
Stephen King has also given his blessing to the project.

BY RACHEL HAAS
True Detective's Cary Fukunaga is searching for "the perfect guy to play Pennywise" for his upcoming remake of Stephen King’s It.

Bloody Disgusting (via Portuguese paper O Globo) reports that Fukunaga revealed that the project has been a long process, and that he has been working on an It remake for several years and still hasn't found the right actor for the iconic killer clown.

“I’ve been in this project for about five years. I had already read versions of the script but nothing felt right. Everybody tried to put too much into it, telling it from the perspective of the adult and the child in a two hour movie. It didn’t fit. So I decided to throw it all away and start from scratch," said Fukunaga.

“This will be my first movie in the US and I’m still trying to find the perfect guy to play Pennywise," he added. "It’s really good to know Stephen [King] likes what we did. We [Fukunaga and writers David Kajganich and Chase Palmer] changed names, dates [the story is originally set in the '60s] dynamics, but the spirit is similar to what he’d like to see in cinemas, I think.”

Stephen King's It novel was adapted into a 1990 miniseries starring Tim Curry as Pennywise. Producer Seth Grahame-Smith has said the new film "will bring back some of the viciousness of the book that they couldn’t do with the [1990 TV] miniseries." Production on the film will start this summer.

They should get Michael Shannon to portray Pennywise. Imagine him screaming at everyone?

**** it, just get Willem Dafoe. he looks creepy as hell WITHOUT clown make-up.

The more I think about it, I think it all comes down to an actor who has a "unique" look. Tim Curry had that. Those big eyes, that huge grin, etc.,. Someone who comes to mind in having a "unique" look is Benedict Cumberbatch.

I haven't read the book, but I've seen the 1990 movie. As much as I love Tim Curry,Pennywise just wasn't that scary to me. He was too comedic. I hope that for the new version he's still got some of the jokes and one liners, but they make him a truly terrifying character.

Stop. Please, Because now I need this to happen and its never ever going to happen. Damn you!

I googled this and there actually seem to be a fair amount of similar suggestions around the web. Still a long shot like any fancast but imagine how creepy she could be!

Actually recent films like Occulus took inspiration from the book of IT and told parallel child/adult stories to very good effect. The main problem with doing so with an IT film is not that structure doesn't work on film but just that it would be too long and in telling the stories parallel to one another there would be no good place to split the stories.

Intercutting the stories would work very well in a new miniseries but as a film, I understand the split.

- Vince Vaughn
- Vincent D'Onofrio
- Billy Bob Thornton

Ben Mendelsohn passed on playing Pennywise because of Star Wars Rogue One scheduling conflict.
