Scoop: Under the Dome Traps Mare Winningham for Mysterious Role
BY MEGAN MASTERS

Mare Winningham is taking a trip Under the Dome.

The two-time Emmy winner — most recently nominated for her turn on Hatfields & McCoys — will guest-star on CBS’ summer smash, TVLine has learned, in a role that is mysterious and maybe even a bit… malevolent?

Winningham will appear in a late-August episode as Agatha, a deceptively warm caretaker who welcomes Big Jim into the Chester’s Mill home she’s looking after. However, it quickly becomes apparent that her intentions are anything but pure.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Mare Winningham on Under the Dome,” executive producer Neal Baer said in a statement. “She’s my good-luck charm: I worked with her on ER, as well as on Law & Order: SVU (for which she was Emmy-nominated as Best Guest Actress). She brings truth and believability to every role, and she will definitely leave viewers talking.”

An original big screen Brat Packer, Winningham’s most recent TV credits include Hawaii Five-0, the aforementioned Hatfields & McCoys and Torchwood.

Under the Dome, which to date has drawn nearly 20 million viewers to its pilot, airs Mondays at 10/9c.

Good 2nd episode. Im still really interested in this. Everyone's story is interesting except the teens. I seen the McAllister kid, Colin Ford, do better acting and most of the dialogue they get isnt that good. And I wanted to slap him when he was recording video instead of helping with the fire
Also that psycho kid Junior story isnt really interesting either.

But all in all, I really like this and am looking forward to the next episode

I didn't realize young Sam from Supernatural was in this. I haven't seen the first episode yet, but I did catch tonight's episode. Its interesting, but I'm not entirely hooked yet.

I find the guys outside the dome the creepiest part of the show. Even when the crazy cop pulls out a gun... they just stand there like statues. I mean, granted, they probably know the dome is bulletproof, but still.

lol agreed

For me personally I just felt it was anti climatic. The way I read blurbs about it and the way it was being set up I thought that the ending was going to be the final battle for humanity or a battle of good and evil.

Turns out the "battle" was nothing and Randall Flagg was wasted and went from being this scary dark powerful figure to being tricked, duped and used to nothing. So disappointed
I mean thats just classic Randall Flagg though, lol. It's hard to say, I personally love most of his books and his endings are very fitting and thematically tied, but rarely too cliche or obvious. I also love how his stories intertwine within each other but still work marvelously as standalone stories (imo).

I thought that was really odd too. I know they are ordered to not interact with those within the dome, but still if someone pulls a gun and kills someone you expect them to at least flinch or do something. It looked like one of the soldiers may have been calling it on in the com, but that is about it.

Maybe they're just cardboard cut outs to make it look like soldiers have the dome surrounded?

I like how people are already going insane... in like less than 24 hours. Won't be long before the crazy religious lady from the Mist shows up and turns the townspeople on the protagonists.

Well they can't hear what's going on in the dome. So if they are ordered to not look at it, it wouldn't be that hard to miss a gun going off.

Loving this. Vogel is great as flawed hero, Rachelle Lefever is awesome and WOW is she gorgeous, and I'm really digging Hank Schrader as a small town Lex Luthor.

They're ordered not to interact, but they are looking into the dome. You can see them facing the dome in the background so they saw what went down. Its just really strange, because if the military didn't do this then it would treated as a terrorist situation and any and all deaths within the incident would be treated heavily not lightly. It being a King story i guess i should expect the strange tho.

How could they interact anyway though? The dome is impenetrable. Even if they want to help, they can't.

I don't expect them to help. I expect them to react. Flinch, call it in, move, do something. Ya Know? Show some basic human empathy and reactions. They were standing in the background like cardboard cut outs. Even infantry men who have seen some **** react when a civillian is shot. They just stared at it like they were from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Not one of them looked to their CO, fellow soldier, or anything. That's damn strange.

Yeah, that's true. But it might just been because they were in the background and the director figured we weren't paying much attention to them, so they were instructed to just stand there.

They should have shown one soldier speaking into his mic, "Sir, they've started killing each other. Say does anyone know what we're having for lunch?"

To the soldiers and the outside world, it must be like watching a TV show. ****s hitting the fan, but there's nothing you can do to stop it, so why exert any effort? Just sit back and watch.

Though, I expect that might change, should the firefighter find out his brother has been killed.

I just realized it was young Sam in the ep too.

Once that cop that went crazy was introduced, I knew he was gonna freak out and do something stupid. I really dislike when people give in to panic and hysteria. Things werent even that bad yet and this guy goes off the rails and accidentally kills his friend.

A general theme in King's stories is that people are always one strange event away from going psycho.

Is the Junior Rennie character played this way in the book? Because, if so, that's a pretty big retread of The Stand's Harold Lauder.

Apparently Junior is a lot worse in the book from what I heard. Hint: [BLACKOUT]Necrophilia.[/BLACKOUT]

Junior is a lot worse in the book, and it escalates much more quickly. He's kind of lame in the show so far, but I'm not sure if they're allowed to do what makes him a terribly frightening character in the book. If they can, he's going to be awesome.

Another difference concerning the soldiers at the wall is that in the book [blackout]you can actually hear through the dome.[/blackout] Makes for an interesting change though.

thought the same thing about little Sam Winchester. not his best work last night. the female cop was pretty bad last night too I thought.

And I wanted to slap him when he was recording video instead of helping with the fire.

yeah that bit was annoying. he only got in line when the shoplifter chick caught his eye. wonder if the seizure had something to do with that? are they mentality linked or something?

This show is pretty good. I absolutely despise Junior. He is very creepy and of course insane. Is the dome making him crazy or was he always like that you think?

The thing about the soldiers outside and the way they were ignoring the people in the dome kind of made me think of an old Twilight Zone episode and a Star Trek episode The Cage, where the humans are in a zoo. One of the character's in the show even says it feels like they are in a goldfish bowl.

I also find it odd that people haven't gone to the center of the dome to find a power source. I know one kid has started charting the dome but I'm surprised more haven't done this.

Something has to be generating the dome force field and it stands to reason that it is coming from within the dome to be precise enough to form a sphere (as stated by the kid) round the town.

I like shows like this that make you think and wonder when a fantastic event happens in a normal world you can relate with.

With only 2 episodes, I can't really say if the show is pretty good or not. It's still very early to tell. But I think there's no clear path as to where the show is going, there's no "leading role", it just jumps from one set of characters to the other.
I don't know, it has the benefit of the doubt so I'm gonna continue watching.
