Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

Where Jaws and Jurassic Park, ET and Raiders level? No. :o

Not saying it wasn't. But, was it Jaws or Jurassic Park? No.

TBH I'm not expecting Jurassic Park or Jaws level quality but I'm hoping it's on par with Tintin or War of the Worlds.

Are we talking about in terms of enjoyment? Because while clearly Raiders and ET are better movies, I enjoy Jurassic Park more (much of that is my nostalgic love for dinosaurs and monsters).

To me this feels more 80s Spielberg then anything he has done in awhile, and its down to the two leads. There is a level of what it means to be a young person and the energy that comes with it that I am digging.

But isn't that the point? Does Ready Player One have to be as good a film as those to be as enjoyable for people? Give me Saving Private Ryan over Jurassic Park and Jaws, but I'd say Jaws is a better film.

The movie looks fun, but my worry is it falls into the I can write the movie for you right now type of issue. I'm hoping it has some unexpected turns. I hope this is a return to 80s quality for Spielberg though. That would be more than welcome.

I think the difference here is Ready Player One is not doing anything new really, while Jaws and Jurassic Park were both ground breaking in their times. I loved dinosaurs growing up, but I never saw a REAL dinosaur in my 7 year old eyes until I saw Jurassic Park. Jaws made people afraid to swim in the ocean. I think that is where there is a bit of a difference. Again, I hope this movie surprises me.

I can see that, but if we are fair, that kind of applies to all of his best work imo. The predictability is outweighed by the ride itself. I am getting excited for this. Probably more then I should, but I am hoping I end up having a very good time and this is something I want to revisit over the years.

We all bring our baggage. But for me this movie feels like a throwback, but in a way that is relevant now. Specifically with the bringing together of pop culture. It reminds me a bit of Roger Rabbit in that way.

Sorry, Jurassic Park is nowhere near Jaws level. I see it's a starting point for many, it maybe their first 'big film' (depends on people's ages I grant you) but as a SFX defining starting point yes, it's an essential note point but it's not top tier Spielberg for me, as others are saying, both E.T. and Raiders knock JP into a cocked hat.

If people want to debate him, please feel free to here....on my thread I made..... http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=522075&highlight=

Reactions are tonight.

We also might get reviews tomorrow, I don't think there's an embargo.

I really hope ths is one of those flicks fanboys geek out about and it's actually justified.

They must be feeling confident if the review embargo is two and a half weeks before release.

So apparently the SXSW screening's having some technical difficulties. They've had to restart it twice now.

Reactions rolling in...

TOTALLY engrossed in every second of @readyplayerone. It is one of the most technically brilliant things I have EVER seen. Spielberg is one of the few directors who could orchestrate this kind of visual symphony that SO many people will enjoy. Pretty amazing.

Update: we managed to get audio back aaaand finished the movie. I genuinely enjoyed it, far funnier than I expected.

So yeah, I LOVED Ready Player One. It’s perhaps the geekiest movie ever made. So so so happy right now!

READY PLAYER ONE feels like Spielberg watched a ton of Luc Besson movies and decided to outdo them. In terms of pure spectacle, it’s the most astonishing thing he’s done. Never underestimate Steve. #SXSW

Ready Player One is a whole lot of fun. Those who are stuck in pre-release hate mode better prepare to be disappointed. #sxsw

Ready Player One: Legit great. This is why we love movies...why we need pop culture. Major Spielberg

#ReadyPlayerOne is classic Steven Spielberg. It’s got the references, the ferocious effects and the great ‘80s soundtrack, sure, but also the charm, the heart, the humor and a fantastic Alan Silvestri score. I loved it & so did this #SXSW crowd. Be excited for it!

READY PLAYER ONE: So so so much movie. Sometimes too much but what I kept thinking over and over again was “my kids are gonna LOVE THIS.” It is joyous and thrilling for the people who it’s designed to joy and thrill.

Ready Player One is ****ING FUN. Most fun I’ve ever had in a theater. #ReadyPlayerOne #sxsw

READY PLAYER ONE: Good lord I was wrong about this one. It’s oodles of fun and kind of the antithesis of Cline’s novel in terms of its quality. References weren’t too cloying for me, but I was so close I couldn’t pick out too much. #sxsw

Movie lovers, have no fear. The experience of @readyplayerone is a visceral, action-packed thrill ride adventure. Sheridan & Cooke sizzle. #SXSW ready player one

Ready Player One is amazing; there are moments which will leave your jaw on the floor #SXSW
So far, so good from the bloggers.

Its Twitter reaction. I won't get too excited. But reviews are close, so that should be more solid reaction.

Thankfully, these aren't reactions from randoms, and a lot of them are RT critics, so I'm feeling optimistic.

Variety's Ramin Setoodeh:
#ReadyPlayerOne is the most purely entertaining movie Spielberg has done in a long time, possibly since 'Minority Report.'
Found a negative from a Pajiba writer:
Kristy Puchko ?? SXSW?Verified account @KristyPuchko 1h1 hour ago
#ReadyPlayerOne posits a corporate big wig who exploits fan culture for profit as its villain. The irony of that is giving me a headache. This is no love letter to pop culture. It’s a crass play to nostalgia; it offers nothing new or exciting.

Good to know.

Setoodeh's reaction is exactly what I get from the trailers. Hoping I feel that way.

A mixed reaction from Fandango and TCM host Alicia Malone:
READY PLAYER ONE: The #SXSW crowd ate it up! The pop culture references are a LOT of fun, geeky glee to see everything together on the big screen. I just wanted more of the real world & more character backstory. I definitely recommend reading the book first!
Another positive from The Playlist's Jordan Ruimy:
So, yeah, READY PLAYER ONE is the most fun I've had watching a Steven Spielberg film since CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
And The Wrap's Beatrice Verhoeven:
I didn’t think I would like #ReadyPlayerOne, but I liked it a WHOLE LOT. I think people cheered and laughed every 2 mins and dang this film was entertaining. So many references, I can’t wait for everyone to see it so we can all talk about it!
And CNN's Frank Pallotta:
#ReadyPlayerOne is nerdy as all hell but it’s hard to not leave the theater with a huge smile on your face. Pure Spielbergian joy.

“my kids are gonna LOVE THIS.”
So, This is what determines what constitutes a good movie nowadays, smh.

Edit: I mean, this shouldn't be the sole criterion to judge a movie.

Reviews are promising but they're not really convincing me to see it any more. I frankly just don't know what to make of the film from everything I've seen so far.
