Where Jaws and Jurassic Park, ET and Raiders level? No.

Not saying it wasn't. But, was it Jaws or Jurassic Park? No.
Where Jaws and Jurassic Park, ET and Raiders level? No.![]()
But isn't that the point? Does Ready Player One have to be as good a film as those to be as enjoyable for people? Give me Saving Private Ryan over Jurassic Park and Jaws, but I'd say Jaws is a better film. Are we talking about in terms of enjoyment? Because while clearly Raiders and ET are better movies, I enjoy Jurassic Park more (much of that is my nostalgic love for dinosaurs and monsters).
To me this feels more 80s Spielberg then anything he has done in awhile, and its down to the two leads. There is a level of what it means to be a young person and the energy that comes with it that I am digging.

I can see that, but if we are fair, that kind of applies to all of his best work imo. The predictability is outweighed by the ride itself. I am getting excited for this. Probably more then I should, but I am hoping I end up having a very good time and this is something I want to revisit over the years. The movie looks fun, but my worry is it falls into the I can write the movie for you right now type of issue. I'm hoping it has some unexpected turns. I hope this is a return to 80s quality for Spielberg though. That would be more than welcome.
We all bring our baggage. But for me this movie feels like a throwback, but in a way that is relevant now. Specifically with the bringing together of pop culture. It reminds me a bit of Roger Rabbit in that way.I think the difference here is Ready Player One is not doing anything new really, while Jaws and Jurassic Park were both ground breaking in their times. I loved dinosaurs growing up, but I never saw a REAL dinosaur in my 7 year old eyes until I saw Jurassic Park. Jaws made people afraid to swim in the ocean. I think that is where there is a bit of a difference. Again, I hope this movie surprises me.
They must be feeling confident if the review embargo is two and a half weeks before release.

TOTALLY engrossed in every second of @readyplayerone. It is one of the most technically brilliant things I have EVER seen. Spielberg is one of the few directors who could orchestrate this kind of visual symphony that SO many people will enjoy. Pretty amazing.

READY PLAYER ONE feels like Spielberg watched a ton of Luc Besson movies and decided to outdo them. In terms of pure spectacle, its the most astonishing thing hes done. Never underestimate Steve. #SXSW

Ready Player One is a whole lot of fun. Those who are stuck in pre-release hate mode better prepare to be disappointed. #sxsw

#ReadyPlayerOne is classic Steven Spielberg. Its got the references, the ferocious effects and the great 80s soundtrack, sure, but also the charm, the heart, the humor and a fantastic Alan Silvestri score. I loved it & so did this #SXSW crowd. Be excited for it!

READY PLAYER ONE: Good lord I was wrong about this one. Its oodles of fun and kind of the antithesis of Clines novel in terms of its quality. References werent too cloying for me, but I was so close I couldnt pick out too much. #sxsw

Ready Player One is amazing; there are moments which will leave your jaw on the floor #SXSW
Found a negative from a Pajiba writer:#ReadyPlayerOne is the most purely entertaining movie Spielberg has done in a long time, possibly since 'Minority Report.'

#ReadyPlayerOne posits a corporate big wig who exploits fan culture for profit as its villain. The irony of that is giving me a headache. This is no love letter to pop culture. Its a crass play to nostalgia; it offers nothing new or exciting.
Another positive from The Playlist's Jordan Ruimy:READY PLAYER ONE: The #SXSW crowd ate it up! The pop culture references are a LOT of fun, geeky glee to see everything together on the big screen. I just wanted more of the real world & more character backstory. I definitely recommend reading the book first!
And The Wrap's Beatrice Verhoeven:So, yeah, READY PLAYER ONE is the most fun I've had watching a Steven Spielberg film since CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
And CNN's Frank Pallotta:I didnt think I would like #ReadyPlayerOne, but I liked it a WHOLE LOT. I think people cheered and laughed every 2 mins and dang this film was entertaining. So many references, I cant wait for everyone to see it so we can all talk about it!
#ReadyPlayerOne is nerdy as all hell but its hard to not leave the theater with a huge smile on your face. Pure Spielbergian joy.
So, This is what determines what constitutes a good movie nowadays, smh.my kids are gonna LOVE THIS.
