Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

Just came back from this, and as an 80s/90s kid (born in '83), I had a great time trying to catch all of the various videogame & other pop-culture references! I was expecting to see mostly 80s references but was surprised to see plenty of references to the 90s (obviously The Iron Giant but also a [blackout]Battletoad[/blackout], among others) and post-2000 material as well ([blackout]Halo[/blackout] being one of the notable ones there, and the Asian kid who jumped out of the van and smashed the drone with a stick seemed like an homage to [blackout]Half-Life 2's City 17 scanners[/blackout]). Also really liked a reference to a certain '79 movie with the [blackout]Alien chestburster[/blackout], as well as one of my sci-fi genre favorites from '53 with the [blackout]Martian spaceship from War of the Worlds[/blackout]. The way the opening race started out also put a smile on my face when I heard the sound effects from [blackout]Pole Position[/blackout]—although, definitely a missed opportunity with that race not riffing off of something from the Wipeout series since the basic idea behind that franchise is futuristic racing.

I wasn't sure while watching the movie, but did anyone else think the coin-collecting (and dropping) sound effect was from [blackout]Sonic the Hedgehog[/blackout]? Will have to check that later when the movie is out on disc.

Definitely feel like I want to see the movie again, but it was one of those movies where I think I'd prefer seeing it on Blu-Ray in order to freezeframe it and catch all of the references that went by really quickly.

The only real complaints I had with the movie was that there were a tad too many unnecessary scenes in the "real world" (did we really need to see the IOI players being KO'd every time? It was funny the first few times but after that it lost its impact), and the ending lost some impact with that scene in the "real world"—I really wanted to see an ending scene back in the Oasis, which I think would've been better and could've delivered a final dramatic punch to the movie.

9/10, and really enjoyed it overall. Might catch it one more time in theaters—the 3D was pretty good but not outstanding, and will definitely be buying on 4K Blu-Ray to better enjoy the visuals and freezeframe it to catch everything I missed.

Just got back, loved it, sssssooo many references, I caught a lot, maybe even one no one else seemingly has [BLACKOUT]Was it just me or did Daito arrive to the final battle in Serenity before he turns into Gundam?[/BLACKOUT].

But yeah, just a fun ride and in true Spielberg fashion he adds a lot of heart and character into the proceedings as well. Kudos for him getting in plenty of references to modern gaming also, not bad for a 71 year old :cwink:.
And of course there was the obligatory reference at the end of it about how we need to connect with people in the real world which I thought was quite relevant in the age of Facebook, Twitter and mobile phones.

8/10.

I actually feel ashamed for not catching that ship. I'm a bad nerd.

That would have completely gone against the ending statement.

Right, I know, and it was definitely a Spielberg-ian ending, just saying I personally would rather have gotten an exciting fist-pumping scene back in the Oasis, like maybe getting to see Parzival and the others getting ready to play another game. The ending we got sorta deflated my excitement.

This is false. Spielberg said in an interview his favorite superhero film was GOTG. You can google it.

OK I saw that. I don't think it's that he doesn't think highly of them, so much as he thinks superheroes are thriving right now and will eventually have a bubble bursting period like westerns.

I was the only one who seemed to notice it out of my family, and I haven't seen it mentioned on any websites, but it sure looked like [BLACKOUT]Serenity[/BLACKOUT] to me.

Yeah, that's a good pick! But it's not so much that he hates the MCU movies, but that he kind of despises what they represent for the industry. While I don't think that he actually has namedropped the MCU, he's had this to say recently...

“I think the obsession with four-quadrant and superhero movies puts legitimate cinema in jeopardy.

“It worries me that audiences will only go to the movie when they trust the brand and I worry that some of our small great movies will only be made for the small screen."

The MCU is the biggest game/brand in town so he's clearly at least thinking about it.

He's also said that if he directed a superhero movie he would do it because it would be "good business right now" or something to that effect. That doesn't sound like someone who is terribly invested in the genre except for the movies he has named as his favorites (TDKT, Donner's Superman, GOTG, Iron Man).

Yep, it was [blackout]Serenity.[/blackout] And I have seen it on a few sites, but not many.

Back from my Screening and i loved every single Minute from this Movie Bravo Steven Spielberg

Glad to see you guys loved it as much as I did! One question though: why are there people on Twitter like Nathan Rabin and Alex Billington who are hating on this movie? It sound like their complaints are really superfluous and they come off like they weren't paying attention to the movie!

Box office news ahead of the weekend...

Thanks to widespread critical acclaim and a strong reception from audiences worldwide, Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One has been doing pretty solid business all week. The film has earned just under $72 million domestically in seven days and while it's not expected to retain its crown atop the box office this weekend, due to the release of Paramount's critically acclaimed horror feature A Quiet Place, the race should be a close one as RPO is currently projected to take in a number in the mid-to-low twenties. Word-of-mouth should also help carry the film in the coming weeks to the $150 million range before the end of the month.

International numbers have been even better, especially in China where its surpassed $110 million in just a week. It's now Hollywood's highest-grossing film in China this year, topping Marvel's Black Panther, which finished its run there with approximately $105 million. Worldwide box office have yet-to-be-updated, but the film should pass $300 million globally, possibly $350 million, at some point this weekend, if it hasn't already.

Fixed.YW :gngl:

It's probably the worst Spielberg movie I've seen but I won't blame Spielberg for that but rather the writing which treats the audience as absolute morons. We can see that it's the bike from Akira, you don't need to tell us. It gets props for Buckaroo Banzai! reference but again we know what it's from; you don't need to hit us over the head with it.

It was an exercise in cynical corporate pandering with all the subtlety of a brick to the face.

I had no idea what Buckaroo Banzai was before this film. That was the one reference I did not know, same for my brother. My best friend has no knowledge of that, Akira or Gundam.

Ready Player One is kind of a how-to for normies. The rest of us knew everything without being told, a lot of people don't.
