Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

Any excuse to post it SPIDEY. :funny:

I am totally playing. This is obviously the right move. I am kind of getting fond of Disney and WB's new March dates. Disney with their animated to live action remakes, and WB with their legit blockbusters. Still kind of hoping they move Wonder Woman to March, though I doubt it at this point.
I like the March dates as well. Gives me big movies to watch before the summer. And yeah I agree with you about Wonder Woman. It's still early, they could easily move it.

There is way too many in the summer, that I have started missing some every year.

I know, it's so overcrowded now.
It is funny, because while movies fight over May, June and now July, August, March and April have shown to be more viable as there is less competition.

Hell a film can get a bigish opening in January and February if everything goes right. Because of the unpredictable weather it probably isn't smart to release a 200 million dollar film in those two months but they are viable to a certain degree.

Very good news, more time is always better especially as Spielberg is just going nonstop lately between the BFG and this.

Amazing how that can happen and no one claim one company a bully or jerk or throwing it's weight around or any such thing. Almost like it's very normal or something.

Spielberg is tight with a lot of the people at Lucasfilm (Kathleen Kennedy is almost as much his protégé as she is George Lucas's) and he has been going back to when Lucas ran things (those two have been friends for decades). So my guess is that they had informed him about SW moving to December beforehand, and he agreed to move RP1 voluntarily (and was just waiting for the right time to announce it).

February has lost its dumping ground status. Deadpool made sure of that. If the studio markets a good film right, then the audience will come regardless of the month.

I always forget that the weather plays a role, along with the Super Bowl.

Finally read this. It will be interesting to see how the script is put together, and how the story and twists unfold...as nothing about the actual contest is really set up very well in the book...there are all these Deux Ex Machina moments where they randomly reveal the solutions to things based on specific pop culture knowledge someone happens to have.

February hasn't been a dumping ground in recent years. 50 Shades of Grey was a hit last year, as was The Lego Movie the year before. Marvel even moved Black Panther to February 2018 long before Deadpool's success. It's hard to pinpoint a dumping ground month now because even January has yielded success like The Revenant and American Sniper. Granted, both of those were officially released the previous December, but they didn't open wide until January. Even April might as well be a summer month with recent hits like Furious 7 and The Winter Soldier.

I was expecting the older kid from Jurassic World to get the role. I haven't seen Tye Sheridan in anything yet, but I'll be paying closer attention to his performance as Cyclops in X-Men Apocalypse now.

Awesome casting. Works for me. I hope this is actually good. The book is awesome so far

Tye Sheridan!?
Wow, I'm happy for him. He's good and this is exciting news. Tye is cast against character because he's the rebellious, troubled boy persona but Wade is is more of a nerd, right? It's an inspired casting choice and I believe he will put his own spin on the character. .

However, I also notice the typical "Hollywood pattern" here. It's when an actor in the course of a few years get roles in several high profile films. Ready Player One won't be the last. Before this year is over, he will have landed atleast one other role in a future blockbuster.
The sad part of this is that other actors won't get the same chance. They have to wait for their turn to be the flavor of the month, if they ever will be.
Drizzle mentioned Nick Robinson as a possible choice. He could work but he's also got one foot into the pattern because of The 5th Wave. So let him wait for a while
To give an example of an actor that's not in the middle of the spotlight, one that actually has a tie to Tye, it's Jacob Lofland. I think he could have been good as Wade too. He was gone without any explaination in the end of Maze Runner 2 (which is strange because the character seemed quite important) and he didn't get any noticeable exposure despite his appearance in this film.

But let us not shed any tears over this, let's salute Tye Sheridan!!! :)

Tye is REALLY kicking it up a notch or two! Good for him.

Simon Pegg in talks to join.

I'm assuming he'll be in makeup since the character is supposed to be much older than Pegg, but there's also a lot of footage that shows him as a younger man. Either way, Pegg is great, so I'm happy if he's on board.

Pegg is cool, we'll see how he does.

I still can't believe the guy who had one of the most annoying feature film debuts I can think of in Cloverfield went on to be a success.

Yeah, dude is killing it He's not exactly a chameleon but every role he's had in a flick or tv show has been a standout.

50 Shades was a bona fide hit, but incredibly front-loaded and preordained to be a huge success. $85M 3-day/$93M 4-day is nothing to scoff at.

American Sniper and Deadpool were true surprises. They were initially predicted to do well (early estimates for both were $55M-$60M), but they overindexed thanks to enthusiastic word-of-mouth. It's truly impressive.

I'm pretty sure Black Panther will open to $100M+ in 2018, due to the Marvel branding and President's Day release.
