Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

I still can't believe the guy who had one of the most annoying feature film debuts I can think of in Cloverfield went on to be a success.

Amazing, isn't it? Aside from Lizzy Caplan, TJ Miller has done better than all the other actors in that film.

Fun fact! (Maybe.) Michael Stahl-David wax cast as the lead in Cloverfield because JJ Abrams hit him with his car. He randomly was like, "OMG, sorry! Hey, you look like an actor! Want to be in a movie?"

:funny: No idea if this is true (since he was a working actor before that), but it sounds believable enough!

Realistically, JJ does seem like a nice enough guy that he would give you a role in one of his movies after hitting you with his car.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure if it's true but the guy who told me that is an actor who is a friend of MSD, and I don't think he would lie about it.

Note to self: if you ever see JJ Abrams driving around, jump in front of his car.

Hannah John-Kamen Lands Role In Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’

I was thinking she was Helen Harrison but maybe she's Kira Morrow

I thought that was Zoe Kravitz for a second.

Dutch from Killjoys, awesome. Her accent is great as well, I hope that she gets to keep it.

I just finished this book today and I didn't love it like I had hoped to. I actually think the film might be a better medium because it won't feel like we're getting drawn out 80's pop culture info dumps.

I can definitely see TJ Miller as I-Rok, that's great casting.

Ready Player One‘s story revolves around the presence of virtual reality on an unfathomable scale in the form of OASIS, a system which allows its users to explore its digital landscape in a way that is widely preferred to the slums of the near-dystopian future. And it’s not hard to see why – OASIS is so immersive that it allows players to utilize avatars that let them do everything they can in real life and more – including getting a shot at the biggest jackpot in history. It only makes sense that a company like HTC Vive would use the film adaptation to try and capitalize on the format, using their Viveport platform to distribute a wide variety of content based on the OASIS interface.

Warner Bros. Pictures Worldwide Marketing President Blair Rich had the following to say about the partnership:

“The virtual reality world within Ready Player One is extremely advanced, sophisticated and engaging, and with Vive, we chose the best system to represent the future of VR. Vive is the perfect partner to bring that to life and also has the broadest reach to global markets for the use of VR in home, mobile and offline channels. We’re delighted that HTC Vive will be partnering with Ready Player One and very excited to work with them leading up the movie’s release in Spring 2018.”

In addition, Viveport’s President Rikard Steiber chipped in with the following:

“Ready Player One is one of the most anticipated movies in the world, and has tremendous potential to engage and entertain the worldwide market, showcasing the transformative nature of VR, and what it can and will be. Vive is delivering on the promise of VR and continues to be the most advanced and immersive VR experience available to consumers, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Warner Bros. to bring these experiences to consumers, on all platforms, around the globe.”

So I'm about 20% into this book. Does the info dump ever stop? And am I supposed to think the main character is an insufferable loser?

Yes. He's a geek. It probably hits a little too close to home for some of us.

yup. Sometimes its hard to look at a reflections of ourselves.

Still trying to figure out how they're going to navigate the licensing issues for this movie...ESPECIALLY at the end.

Spielberg was able to get the Looney Tunes and Mickey and co for Who Framed Roger Rabbit so I'm sure he'll be able to get some of the licensing issued sorted and I imagine things will be replaced by things owned by WB.

call me a stickler but Mechagodzilla is make or break for me.

He's also removing references to his own movies.

I hope this movie is a big hit. We haven't seen a blockbuster from Spielbergo in quite a while, unless you count The BFG (which I liked well enough, but it flopped at the box office).

I thought the book was kind of trash, but the movie could still be great.

It's got a great release date although it's the first Spielberg film in a long time to not have a summer or fall/holiday release.

I thought it was for the more heavy handed stuff. But didn't he say he might keep the DeLorean though?

The Delorean's being kept IIRC he only produced BTTF anyway and too iconic to remove.
