How Sweet! I just got back from one of my classes and the reading list includes "The Dark Knight Returns", "Watchmen" and "Marvels". The class is called Teaching the Superman. It's an honors class and I'm taking it to fulfill a requirement for it. I figured just by reading the course description that we would be talking about something like Superman and other superheroes and their influence and effect on the world, but i didn't think it was going to be this cool. I mean the professor is a really cool and funny and knows all about comic books and fandom and stuff. And what sweetens the deal is there's no real homework other than to read. Our mid-term is going to be a take home test and the final is just a short research paper.

Anyone else taking a class like this, or ever take a class where you had read or watch cool comics or movies? And what was your experience in the class?

I got to read Maus for a history class once. Indie comic about the Holocaust. Was neato.

I enjoyed Maus.

My gf took an entire Superhero class. Read Watchmen, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, Astro City, some old Avengers, and even some prose like Superfolks and Gladiator.

Cool. Good for you.

I was allowed to draw a comic book for class once.

Senior year of high school for the class "Fantastic Literature" we read The Dark Knight Returns. Which was great, we also got to read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and fairy tales as portrayed by the Brothers Grimm. I wish we read Watchmen though as it is far better than what did read. Still a very fun class to end high school with

Sadly it doesn't. This is more of a history/literature class since we'll be looking at the history of comic books and talk about whether they deserve to be looked at as a real piece of literature as opposed to something more like a picture book with words.

In my first semester, I made the mistake of letting my teacher/advisor know that I was interested in art/writing and wanted to make a graphic novel, so he told me he wanted me to do my final, which was to create an allegory, in the format of a comic. It was a lot of work and took a long time to finish, but he gave me an A for it so it was worth it. My art was pretty crappy tho.

LOL, not to add salt to the wound, but this is actually an honors class for me. Like you'd think these classes would be hard, but like my professor told us today, in this class you'd actually have to try really hard to fail or do bad.

Well I am taking a history of women in rock music this semester, and basically all we have to do is listen to music and go to 2 live band shows :D

Aaaawwww SNAP with a sassy tone

Ha! Me too! I made a Jesus and the 12 apostles comic book for my world religions class senior year. I colored it with microsoft paint. It was epic.

I should put it on the Womp Nation.

Jsut to let you know, SpideyVille, Marvels is a fantastic read. Trust me, you'll love it.

Wish I had a class like this at my school. :csad:

I took a class like this 2 years ago. Our big paper was an essay on any comic and I chose a Spider-Man comic. I got an A for that paper. It was really fun. My professor talked about comics in pop culture and the media. It satisfied an art requirement I needed to graduate college.

Just today I went to the school bookstore to get a History book and found The Dark Knight Returns and thought, "I want to be in that class." :brucebat:

I wonder if my school has something like this. What grade are you in & are you in a public school?

I think the coolest thing my school had is ROTC (which I'm in).

Well i'm in my fourth semester of college, which is a community college here in NY btw. Basically this class is part of an honors program that I'm in where there's about 4-5 classes a semester to choose from and the classes offered change each semester. For example, when I first got into the program, i took a class where we read a few books, stories, and plays and then watched the movie of each work. I have to take a total of 4 of these type of classes and when i was register i just saw the course name and knew i had to at least register for it to grab a spot for myself since obviously a class like this is very likely to get filled up pretty quickly. I signed up without really knowing what to expect, but now i'm glad i did.

Last year my english class was assigned Watchmen instead of The Iliad.:word:

Oh, I thought you were in High School. I'll keep an eye out for a class like yours in college.
